From single to combinatorial therapies in spinal cord injuries for structural and functional restoration

Spinal cord injury results in paralysis, sensory disturbances, sphincter dysfunction, and multiple systemic secondary conditions, most arising from autonomic dysregulation. All this produces profound negative psychosocial implications for affected people, their families, and their communities;the financial costs can be challenging for their families and health institutions. Treatments aimed at restoring the spinal cord after spinal cord injury, which have been tested in animal models or clinical trials, generally seek to counteract one or more of the secondary mechanisms of injury to limit the extent of the initial damage. Most published works on structural/functional restoration in acute and chronic spinal cord injury stages use a single type of treatment: a drug or trophic factor, transplant of a cell type, and implantation of a biomaterial. Despite the significant benefits reported in animal models, when translating these successful therapeutic strategies to humans, the result in clinical trials has been considered of little relevance because the improvement, when present, is usually insufficient. Until now, most studies designed to promote neuroprotection or regeneration at different stages after spinal cord injury have used single treatments. Considering the occurrence of various secondary mechanisms of injury in the acute and sub-acute phases of spinal cord injury, it is reasonable to speculate that more than one therapeutic agent could be required to promote structural and functional restoration of the damaged spinal cord. Treatments that combine several therapeutic agents, targeting different mechanisms of injury, which, when used as a single therapy, have shown some benefits, allow us to assume that they will have synergistic beneficial effects. Valued gabriel quiver of a wedge product and semiprime coalgebras

We describe the valued gabriel quiver of a wedge product of coalgebras and study the category of comodules of a semiprime coalgebra. In particular, we prove that any monomial semiprime k-tame fc-tame coalgebra is string. We also prove a version of Eisenbud-griffith theorem for coalgebras, namely, any hereditary semiprime strictly quasi-finite coalgebra is serial.

In this paper we develop an a posteriori error analysis of a fully-mixed finite element method for a fluid-solid interaction problem in 2D. The media are governed by the elas-todynamic and acoustic equations in time-harmonic regime, respectively, the transmission conditions are given by the equilibrium of forces and the equality of the corresponding normal displacements, and the fluid is supposed to occupy an annular region surrounding the solid, so that a Robin boundary condition imitating the behavior of the sommerfeld condition is imposed on its exterior boundary. Dual-mixed approaches are applied in both domains, and the governing equations are employed to eliminate the displacenent a of the solid and the pressure p of the fluid. In addition, since both transmission conditions become essential, they are enforced weakly by means of two suitable lahrange multipliers The unknowns of the solid and the fluid are then approximated by a conforming galerkin scheme defined in terms of PEERS elements in the solid, Raviart-Thomas of lowest order in the fluid, and continuous piecewise linear functions on the boundary, As the main con-tribution of this work, we derive a reliable and efficient residual-based a posteriori error estimator for the aforedescribed coupled problem. Some numerical results confirming the properties of the estimator are also reported.

We report a time-dependent quantum wavepacket theory employed to interpret the photoabsorption spectrum of the n20 molecule in terms of the nuclear motion on the upper 21A＇ and 11A＂ potential energy surfaces. The n2-O bond breaks upon excitation leading to dissociation. The total angular momentum is treated correctly taking into account the vector property of the electric field of the exciting radiation.

In this work we introduce and analyze a mixed virtual element method(mixed-VEM)for the two-dimensional stationary Boussinesq *** continuous formulation is based on the introduction of a pseudostress tensor depending nonlinearly on the velocity,which allows to obtain an equivalent model in which the main unknowns are given by the aforementioned pseudostress tensor,the velocity and the temperature,whereas the pressure is computed via a postprocessing *** addition,an augmented approach together with a fixed point strategy is used to analyze the well-posedness of the resulting continuous *** the discrete problem,we follow the approach employed in a previous work dealing with the navier-Stokes equations,and couple it with a VEM for the convection-diffusion equation modelling the *** precisely,we use a mixed-VEM for the scheme associated with the fluid equations in such a way that the pseudostress and the velocity are approximated on virtual element subspaces of H(div)and H^(1),respectively,whereas a VEM is proposed to approximate the temperature on a virtual element subspace of H^(1).In this way,we make use of the L^(2)-orthogonal projectors onto suitable polynomial spaces,which allows the explicit integration of the terms that appear in the bilinear and trilinear forms involved in the scheme for the fluid *** the other hand,in order to manipulate the bilinear form associated to the heat equations,we define a suitable projector onto a space of polynomials to deal with the fact that the diffusion tensor,which represents the thermal conductivity,is ***,the corresponding solvability analysis is performed using again appropriate fixed-point ***,Strang-type estimates are applied to derive the a priori error estimates for the components of the virtual element solution as well as for the fully computable projections of them and the postprocessed *** corresponding rates of convergence are als

Pseudostress-BasedMixed Finite Element Methods for the Stokes Problem in Rn with Dirichlet Boundary Conditions.I:A Priori Error Analysis

We consider a non-standard mixed method for the Stokes problem in Rn,n∈{2,3},with Dirichlet boundary conditions,in which,after using the incompressibility condition to eliminate the pressure,the pseudostress tensor s and the velocity vector u become the only ***,we apply the Babuˇska-Brezzi theory to prove the well-posedness of the corresponding continuous and discrete *** particular,we show that Raviart-Thomas elements of order k≥0 for s and piecewise polynomials of degree k for u ensure unique solvability and stability of the associated galerkin *** addition,we introduce and analyze an augmented approach for our pseudostress-velocity *** methodology employed is based on the introduction of the galerkin least-squares type terms arising from the constitutive and equilibrium equations,and the Dirichlet boundary condition for the velocity,all of them multiplied by suitable stabilization *** show that these parameters can be chosen so that the resulting augmented variational formulation is defined by a strongly coercive bilinear form,whence the associated galerkin scheme becomes well posed for any choice of finite element *** instance,Raviart-Thomas elements of order k≥0 for s and continuous piecewise polynomials of degree k+1 for u become a feasible choice in this ***,extensive numerical experiments illustrating the good performance of the methods and comparing them with other procedures available in the literature,are provided.

Integration of Probabilistic and Multi-Hazard Risk Assessment Within Urban Development Planning and Emergency Preparedness and Response: Application to Manizales,Colombia

The details of a multi-hazard and probabilistic risk assessment, developed for urban planning and emergency response activities in Manizales, Colombia, are presented in this article. This risk assessment effort was developed under the framework of an integral disaster risk management project whose goal was to connect risk reduction activities by using open access and state-of-theart risk models. A probabilistic approach was used for the analysis of seismic, landslide, and volcanic hazards to obtain stochastic event sets suitable for probabilistic loss estimation and to generate risk results in different metrics after aggregating in a rigorous way the losses associated to the different hazards. Detailed and high resolution exposure databases were used for the building stock and infrastructure of the city together with a set of vulnerability functions for each of the perils considered. The urban and territorial ordering plan of the city was updated for socioeconomic development and land use using the hazard and risk inputs and determinants, which cover not only the current urban area but also those adjacent areas where the expansion of Manizales is expected to occur. The emergency response capabilities of the city were improved by taking into account risk scenarios and after updating anautomatic and real-time post-earthquake damage assessment.

A case study on the efficacy of different roof bolting schemes in Lhoist north America’s Crab Orchard Mine

Roof bolting has long been used in underground mines across the world to provide ground *** roof bolts are cheap and easy to install with the use of specialized machines as a part of the production cycle. Lhoist north America’s Crab Orchard Mine is an underground room and pillar limestone mine that uses mechanically anchored roof bolts for ground support. The mine currently employs two different roof bolting patterns: a standard 1.5 × 1.5 m pattern, and another 0.8 × 0.8 m pattern for use in areas with particularly hazardous roof conditions. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relative effectiveness of each bolting pattern. A series of numerical models were created using Roc Science’s RS2. The models were based on a symmetrical section of the mine at its deepest point, and were modeled using generalized Hoek-Brown failure criterion along with a discrete fracture network. A series of sensitivity analyses were performed on the models by varying parameters such as joint friction angle, crack persistence, joint randomization, and tensile strength of the limestone. Based on the results of the original models and sensitivity analyses, it appeared that the standard bolting pattern provided sufficient roof support capacity under almost all the expected conditions at the mine, since safety factors below the design value of 1.5 were only found for individual bolts in a few of the worst test cases *** results can help improve the mine’s productivity and reduce operating costs without compromising safety.
