From single to combinatorial therapies in spinal cord injuries for structural and functional restoration

Spinal cord injury results in paralysis, sensory disturbances, sphincter dysfunction, and multiple systemic secondary conditions, most arising from autonomic dysregulation. All this produces profound negative psychosocial implications for affected people, their families, and their communities;the financial costs can be challenging for their families and health institutions. Treatments aimed at restoring the spinal cord after spinal cord injury, which have been tested in animal models or clinical trials, generally seek to counteract one or more of the secondary mechanisms of injury to limit the extent of the initial damage. Most published works on structural/functional restoration in acute and chronic spinal cord injury stages use a single type of treatment: a drug or trophic factor, transplant of a cell type, and implantation of a biomaterial. despite the significant benefits reported in animal models, when translating these successful therapeutic strategies to humans, the result in clinical trials has been considered of little relevance because the improvement, when present, is usually insufficient. Until now, most studies designed to promote neuroprotection or regeneration at different stages after spinal cord injury have used single treatments. Considering the occurrence of various secondary mechanisms of injury in the acute and sub-acute phases of spinal cord injury, it is reasonable to speculate that more than one therapeutic agent could be required to promote structural and functional restoration of the damaged spinal cord. Treatments that combine several therapeutic agents, targeting different mechanisms of injury, which, when used as a single therapy, have shown some benefits, allow us to assume that they will have synergistic beneficial effects. We describe the valued gabriel quiver of a wedge product of coalgebras and study the category of comodules of a semiprime coalgebra. In particular, we prove that any monomial semiprime k-tame fc-tame coalgebra is string. We also prove a version of Eisenbud-Griffith theorem for coalgebras, namely, any hereditary semiprime strictly quasi-finite coalgebra is serial.

Direct electrification of silicon microfluidics for electric field applications

Microfluidic systems are widely used in fundamental research and industrial applications due to their unique behavior, enhanced control, and manipulation opportunities of liquids in constrained geometries. In micrometer-sized channels, electric fields are efficient mechanisms for manipulating liquids, leading to deflection, injection, poration or electrochemical modification of cells and droplets. While PDMS-based microfluidic devices are used due to their inexpensive fabrication, they are limited in terms of electrode integration. Using silicon as the channel material, microfabrication techniques can be used to create nearby electrodes. despite the advantages that silicon provides, its opacity has prevented its usage in most important microfluidic applications that need optical access. To overcome this barrier, silicon-on-insulator technology in microfluidics is introduced to create optical viewports and channel-interfacing electrodes. More specifically, the microfluidic channel walls are directly electrified via selective, nanoscale etching to introduce insulation segments inside the silicon device layer, thereby achieving the most homogeneous electric field distributions and lowest operation voltages feasible across microfluidic channels. These ideal electrostatic conditions enable a drastic energy reduction, as effectively shown via picoinjection and fluorescence-activated droplet sorting applications at voltages below 6 and 15 V, respectively, facilitating low-voltage electric field applications in next-generation microfluidics.

The aim of this study undertaken at Lake Muhazi in Rwanda was to determine and analyze the major elements present in water. The presence of many major elements （Al, As, Ba, C, Ca, Cu, Fe, H^＋, K, Mg, Mn, N, P, S, Si, and Zn） was determined by spectroscopic technique. The concentrations of the elements were measured in water samples taken from three different locations of the lake from May to August 2008. The lake is polluted by water flow from mountain sides surrounding the lake. Other causes of pollution could be the use of agrochemicals in the sugar land, which surrounds the lake, and human activities near the lake. Finally, we proposed the strategies that can be applied in order to ensure good conservation of the environment and to prevent augmentation of heavy materials into the lake.

Bird habitat preferences drive hemoparasite infection in the Neotropical region

The role that the environment plays in vector-borne parasite infection is one of the central factors for understanding disease *** assessed how Neotropical bird foraging strata and habitat preferences determine infection by parasites of the genera Haemoproteus,Plasmodium,Leucocytozoon,and Trypanosoma and filarioids,and tested for phylogenetic signal in these host-parasite *** performed extensive searches of the scientific literature and created a database of hemoparasite *** collected data on host body mass,foraging strata,habitat preference,and migratory status,and tested if host ecological traits predict each hemoparasite occurrence and prevalence using a phylogenetic Bayesian *** of Plasmodium tend to infect birds from tropical forests while birds from altitudinal environments are likely to be infected by species of *** probability of a bird being infected by filarioid or Trypanosoma is higher in lowland *** species that occur in anthropic environments and dry habitats of tropical latitudes are more susceptible to infection by species of *** foraging strata is also influential and bird species that forage in the mid-high and canopy strata are more prone to infection by species of Haemoproteus and *** also identified phylogenetic signal for host-parasite associations with the probability of infection of Neotropical birds by any hemoparasite being more similar among more closely related *** provided a useful framework to identify environments that correlate with hemoparasite infection,which is also helpful for detecting areas with potential suitability for hemoparasite infection due to land conversion and climate change.

Litter production and decomposition are critical to forest productivity,nutrient cycling,and carbon seques-tration in tropical woody ***,nutrient release and leaf litter stoichiometry in tropical legume tree plantations over the long term after outplanting are poorly understood or even *** improving our under-standing of the pattern of changes in the decomposition of N-fixing leaf litters and their possible impact on carbon stor-age,we measured litter production,mass loss and nutrient release for 240 d during litter decomposition for two tropical legume tree species(Plathymenia reticulata and Hymenaea courbaril),in Rio de Janeiro,*** production for *** was 5.689 kg ha^(−1) a^(−1) and 3.231 kg ha^(−1) a^(−1) for *** patterns of mass loss rates were similar;however,nutrient release was greater for ***,while *** showed immobilization of nutrients,especially for N,which increased by almost 20%in the early phase of decomposition followed by gradual *** from the N-fixing species did differ in nutrient chemistries over time,which was not surprising given that initial nutrient concentrations varied broadly,except for C and *** of the nutrient concentrations increased as the remaining litter mass decreased in both species,except for C and *** C:N and N:P ratios differed between the species,but N:P did not correlate to mass *** species had N-rich leaves,but *** decomposition was very likely P-limited,while *** seemed to be co-limited by N and *** results showed different patterns in nutrient release and the stoichi-ometry involved in the decomposition dynamics of the two tropical N-fixing species,even though they have similar litter decay *** species,but especially ***,may help re-establish nutrient cycling in disturbed ecosystems.

dear Editor,Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus(MPXV),a double-stranded DNA virus in the genus Orthopoxvirus,family *** is known to be transmitted between animals such as rats and squirrels,but animal-to-human and human-to-human transmission has been known in Africa since *** is linked to direct contact with body fluids,skin lesions,and patient items as well as respiratory droplets in case of prolonged face-to-face contact[1].Until recently,only a few cases were associated with travel to endemic countries or contact with infected animals imported from endemic countries.
