Theoretical knowledge and psychomotor skill acquisition of basic life support training programme among secondary school students

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study is to evaluate the theoretical knowledge and psychomotor skill acquisition of basic life support(BLS) by a group of secondary school students in Nigeria pre and post BLS training. METHODS: This was quasi-experimental study design with 210 participants. They were taught on adult BLS and all the participants practiced BLS on a Resusci-Anne manikin immediately after the training. Data were collected using American Heart Association(AHA) structured questionnaire and psychomotor skills checklist for BLS at baseline, and post BLS ***: The pre-training knowledge score was 1.9±1.4. This increased after the BLS training to 11.4±2.4, and the mean difference between the pre and post BLS training scores was 9.48571. Pre-training psychomotor skill score was 0.00±0.00, this increased to 8.9±1.9 after the training, and the mean difference was 8.90000. The knowledge and psychomotor skill difference between pre and post BLS training was signifi cant(P<0.000).CONCLUSION: Most Nigerian secondary school students were not knowledgeable about BLS. Therefore, there is need for the creation of more awareness among the students.

Isolation and evaluation of antiglycation potential of polyalthic acid(furano-terpene)from Daniella oliveri

A furano-diterpene（polyalthic acid） was isolated as a major stable compound for the first time from the oleoresin of the Daniella oliveri of the family Caesalpiniacea through column chromatography *** acid was characterized using data obtained from EIMS,HREIMS,ESI-MS,MALDI-MS as well as 1D and 2D NMR and it was evaluated for its potential to inhibit the formation of advanced glycation end-products（AGEs） using a standard in vitro antiglycation *** acid indicated a negative antiglycation potential compared to standard inhibitor that has 85%inhibition,which is an indication that polyalthic acid may not contribute to the antiglycation activity of the plant as acclaimed in folkloric *** negative antiglycation observed could indicate that the polyalthic acid could trigger glycation,thereby subjecting users to various degrees of *** bioactivity evaluation on molinspiration evaluator indicated that polyalthic acid could be a potential drug *** biological and chemical insights gained on polyalthic acid provide a good basis for future research.

Care and Support Programmes for Orphans and Vulnerable Children: Achievements and Implications of HIV/AIDS Funded Project in Osun State, Nigeria

Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) and their families face many challenges but there are opportunities to provide care and support programmes for them in their communities. This paper presents the achievements and implications of HIV Programme Development Project (HPDP) funded by World Bank on care and support services for OVC in Osun State, Nigeria. Eight Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) were engaged by Osun State Agency for the Control of AIDS (OSACA) as part of HPDP to provide care and support services for OVC between year 2013 and 2015. Using reporting tools, data collected by the CSOs were entered into District Health Information System 2 (DHIS2) platform and analysed using Microsoft Excel. In addition, Key Informant Interviews (KII) were conducted among the selected CSOs, OVC and the caregivers who were beneficiaries of HPDP in Osun State, Nigeria. A total of 12,353 OVC were reached and about half of them were female. There was an increase in the trends of number of OVC seen and the support services provided from the year 2013 to 2015. Of the 12,353 OVC that benefitted from this programme, 1905 (15.4%) received health care services, 5383 (43.6%) received nutritional services, 5317 (43.0%) received educational services and 9861 (79.8%) were provided with psychosocial support services. About 503 (4.1%) of the OVC received economic strengthening services while 270 (2.2%) of household heads were provided with economic support. However, 3 OVC were lost to follow-up, 14 OVC voluntarily withdrew from the project and 6 OVC died. The FGD and KII revealed that the project was very impactful in transforming the lives of the OVC. Programmes for children orphaned and made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS will contribute to the achievement of HIV/ AIDS prevention and control efforts. The HIV/AIDS free generation can be built by responding to the physical, social and mental needs of these children and their families in their communities. There is a need to scale-up this programme

Plankton- Based Assessment of the Trophic State of Three Tropical Lakes

In developing countries, lakes being important sources of water supply and fishing are vulnerable to anthropogenic impact, yet knowledge of their trophic state in relation to changes in species composition, and environmental variables, are limited. This study is aimed at assessing the trophic status of lakes by monthly sampling of three lakes located along the floodplain of Cross River, Nigeria between January 2008 and December 2009. Samples were analyzed for water quality parameters, zooplankton and phytoplankton composition and distribution. Results were subjected to community structure analysis using trophic state index, species richness and diversity indexes. Essential primary productivity nutrients, nitrates, sulphates and phosphates were highest in Ejagham Lake, and lowest in Ikot Okpora Lake. Dominant phytoplankton species Oscillatoria lacustria (Cyanophyceae), Cyclotella operculata (Bacilliarophyceae) and zooplankton Keratella tropica, Keratella quadrata, Filinia longiseta, Branchionus anguillaris and Trichocerca pusilla (rotifers) all typical of eutrophic communities were recorded in high densities in Ejagham Lake in both dry and wet seasons while Cladocerans, Bosmina longirostris and Moina micrura and copepods considered indicators of oligotrophy and mesotrophy were recorded in large numbers in Ikot Okpora and Obubra Lakes respectively. Higher values of species richness, Evenness and Shannon-Wiener diversity index for both phytoplankton and zooplankton, were recorded in Ejagham Lake during the dry season than wet. Also values of the Trophic state index were generally highest at the Ejagham Lake in the savanna region of the floodplain and lowest at Ikot Okpora in the forest region of the floodplain. Forest region is therefore a limiting factor in the productivity of lakes in the tropics.

The onset of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic had profound economic and societal repercussions *** nations managed to mitigate the spread of the virus sufficiently early through implementing digital frameworks and other containment ***,many countries in Africa faced significant challenges due to limited technological infrastructure for infection *** study investigated the efficacy of digital frameworks,with a specific focus on contact tracing apps,in stemming the spread of COVID-19 within *** investigated the potential impact of the use of these apps on reducing infection rates and improving public health ***,this study provided insights into the practical implementation of such frameworks and the challenges associated with their nationwide deployment.A structured user-oriented questionnaire was distributed to participants across different geopolitical zones in *** study employed association rule mining and descriptive statistics,setting a support threshold of 0.001 and confidence of 0.8,to uncover patterns of interest among *** analysis using Barnes–Hut t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding was conducted to derive reliable inferences from the *** findings revealed adoption rates of 69.7%and 93.8%for the minimum and maximum,respectively,in favor of using a COVID-19 contact tracing ***,71.6%of participants expressed concerns about the privacy of their personal information,whereas 74%showed an interest in receiving daily reports on estimated COVID-19 infection in their *** study presents empirical evidence highlighting the potential of contact tracing apps as valuable tools for monitoring and curbing the spread of COVID-19 and related diseases in Nigeria.
