A diverse sessile barnacle fauna from a Miocene shallow-water deposit at Dolnja Stara vas in Slovenia is described.it includes the first descriptions of early post settlement juveniles of Actinobalanus sloveniensis attached to mangrove leaves.These represent three distinct growth phases,the earliest being interpreted as being less than 24 h post settlement,the others being 1 to 2 days post settlement.An assessment of their taphonomy is provided.Associated adult balanomorphs are attached to a variety of organic substrates,including mangrove leaves and branches,fragments of the conifers?Taxodioxylon,Carapoxylon,pine cones,molluscs,and cetacean bones.The barnacles include A.sloveniensis,Amphibalanus venustus,and Perforatus perforatus—many with opercula retained within the shells.A.venustus retains some of the original shell color.This is the second record of barnacle–plant associations from the Central Paratethys from Kamnik and Trbovlje.The paleoecology and paleogeography of the site are discussed.

不同的火山喷发模式形成的海底火山在形态上存在差别，但由于缺乏有效方法，两者之间的关系仍不清晰。本文创新性地运用机器学习聚类分析法，基于高分辨率多波束水深数据，对南海海盆中的海山地形开展多维的形态参数量化分析，并对其结果进行无监督式聚类研究。结果表明，南海海盆中共发育三类海山：类型i，体积大、坡度陡、底盘圆的大型孤立海山；类型ii，体积大、坡度缓、底盘长的大型线状海山；以及类型iii，体积小、坡度缓、底盘椭圆的小型海山。类型i和ii位于东部次海盆洋中脊区，类型i高耸的海山形态代表了活跃且快速的喷发模式，类型ii的平缓形态代表了缓慢且喷发物质流动性更强的火山活动，类型iii沿着转换断层及远离东部次海盆的洋中脊区，代表了缓慢且不强烈的火山活动。本文定量证实了不同构造背景下形成的海山形态具有普遍规律；针对海山形态学建立的聚类分析新方法，可为获得大量岩石学信息之前研究火山喷发模式提供新思路。

The progression of ulcerative colitis(UC)is associated with immunologic derangement,intestinal hemorrhage,and microbiota imbalance.While traditional medications mainly focus on mitigating inflammation,it remains challenging to address multiple symptoms.Here,a versatile gas-propelled nanomotor was constructed by mild fusion of post-ultrasonic CaO_(2) nanospheres with Cu_(2)O nanoblocks.The resulting CaO_(2)–Cu_(2)O possessed a desirable diameter(291.3 nm)and a uniform size distribution.it could be efficiently internalized by colonic epithelial cells and macrophages,scavenge intracellular reactive oxygen/nitrogen species,and alleviate immune reactions by pro-polarizing macrophages to the anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype.This nanomotor was found to penetrate through the mucus barrier and accumulate in the colitis mucosa due to the driving force of the generated oxygen bubbles.Rectal administration of CaO_(2)–Cu_(2)O could stanch the bleeding,repair the disrupted colonic epithelial layer,and reduce the inflammatory responses through its interaction with the genes relevant to blood coagulation,anti-oxidation,wound healing,and anti-inflammation.impressively,it restored intestinal microbiota balance by elevating the proportions of beneficial bacteria(e.g.,Odoribacter and Bifidobacterium)and decreasing the abundances of harmful bacteria(e.g.,Prevotellaceae and Helicobacter).Our gas-driven CaO_(2)–Cu_(2)O offers a promising therapeutic platform for robust treatment of UC via the rectal route.

Results of Surgical Management of Malignant Obstruction of the Common Bile Duct in Yaoundé

introduction: in Cameroon, surgery remains the only approach in malignant obstructions of the common bile duct (MOCBD) even in palliative situations. The aim of this work was to describe the modalities of surgical treatment of MOCBD, evaluate the results and detect the factors associated with postoperative morbidity and mortality. Patients and Methods: We conducted an analytical observational study, with retrospective data collection from the files of patients operated upon for MOCBD. This was done in four referra. hospitals in the city of Yaoundé for a 42-month period spanning from January 1, 2020 to June 30, 2023. Demographic data, clinical presentation, surgical data, and 30-day postoperative outcomes were collected. Results: We collected 71 files. The sex ratio was 1.4 and the mean age was 56 ± 11 years. Fifty-three (53) patients (74.6%) were overweight or obese and 10 patients (14.1%) were hypertensive. A clinical cholestasis syndrome was present in 69 patients (97.2%). Fifty-five (55) patients (77.5%) had a cancer of the head of the pancreas, 8 patients (11.3%) had an extra-hepatic cholangiocarcinoma and 8 patients (11.3%) had an ampullary adenocarcinoma. Eight (8) resections (11.3%) with curative intent had been carried out and in 63 cases (88.7%), surgery was palliative. Postoperative morbidity was 55.7%, influenced by advanced WHO stage (p = 0.02). Postoperative mortality was 25.7%, associated with a high ASA score (p = 0.01). Conclusion: Pancreatic head cancer is the main etiology of malignant obstructions of the common bile duct in Cameroon. Surgical treatment is most often palliative. Postoperative morbidity and mortality are high, influenced by high WHO and ASA scores.

源自优质黏土矿物资源的一维凹凸棒石(AT)纳米纤维,可用于增强复合材料并改善其摩擦磨损特性。采用酚醛树脂(PF)模塑料塑炼工艺及热压成型工艺制备了AT纳米纤维混杂传统微米纤维如碳纤维(CF)、玻璃纤维(GF)及芳纶纤维(AF)增强PF复合材料,系统考察了AT纳米纤维的含量对微米尺度短切纤维增强PF复合材料压缩性能及多种工况下摩擦学性能的影响规律,利用扫描电子显微镜及能谱仪表征了摩擦界面原位生长转移膜的微观结构,探索了AT纳米纤维与微米纤维在干摩擦、油润滑和水润滑条件下可能的协同减摩抗磨作用机理。结果表明,AT与高模量纤维(CF,GF)表现出显著的协同增强作用,显著提高了PF复合材料的压缩强度。当AT纳米纤维质量分数为20%时,CF/AT/PF与GF/AT/PF的压缩强度分别可达407 MPa及400 MPa。干摩擦条件下,AT分别与CF和AF的复配使用促进了固体润滑特性转移膜的生长,提高了材料的自润滑性能;油润滑条件下,GF/AT/PF表现出最高的耐磨性能,GF减薄可能是主要的磨损机理;水润滑条件下,AF/AT/PF表现出最低的摩擦系数,而CF/AT/PF表现出最高的耐磨性能。

introduction: Neonatal mortality remains a major public health concern. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the number of newborns dying each year has fallen from 5 million in 1990 to 2.4 million in 2019. The aim of our study was to describe the main morbid conditions and their lethality in newborns admitted to the paediatric ward of the CSREF in Commune V. Methodology: We conducted a 12-month prospective descriptive and analytical study from August 2020 to July 2021. Results: During the 12 months of the study, out of 2654 neonates admitted to hospital, 216 met our inclusion criteria, i.e. 8%. Newborns admitted in the first few hours of life represented 99.54% of cases. Full-term newborns accounted for 65.74% of the total. Forty-eight percent of newborns had hypothermia on admission. The most common diagnosis was asphyxia in 55.56% of cases, followed by neonatal infection in 27.78% and prematurity in 10.65%. Death was recorded in 22.2% of cases. Asphyxia was the main cause of neonatal death, followed by prematurity in our context. Conclusion: improving the prognosis of newborn babies will require a thorough understanding of neonatal pathologies and the implementation of a pre- and perinatal prevention policy.

Simplified method for analyzing soil slope deformation under cyclic loading

Reasonable assessment of slope deformation under cyclic loading is of great significance for securing the safety of slopes. The observations of centrifuge model tests are analyzed on the slope deformation behavior under cyclic loading conditions. The potential slip surface is the key for slope failure and follows two rules:(i) the relative horizontal displacement along the potential slip surface is invariable at an elevation, and(ii) the soil along the slip surface exhibits the same degradation pattern. These rules are effective regardless of the location of the potential slip surface throughout the entire deformation process of a homogeneous slope, ranging from the initial deformation stage to the failure process and to the post-failure stage. A new, simplified method is proposed by deriving the displacement compatibility equation and unified degradation equation according to the fundamental rules. The method has few parameters that can be determined through traditional element tests. The predictions from the proposed method agree with the centrifuge test results with vertical loading and shaking table loading. This result confirms that the proposed method is effective in predicting the full deformation process of slopes under different cyclic loading conditions.

The expanding Asgard archaea and their elusive relationships with Eukarya

The discovery of Asgard archaea and the exploration of their diversity over the last 6 years have deeply impacted the scientific community working on eukaryogenesis,rejuvenating an intense debate on the topology of the universal tree of life(uTol).Here,we discuss how this debate is impacted by two recent publications that expand the number of Asgard lineages and eukaryotic signature proteins(ESPs).We discuss some of the main difficulties that can impair the phylogenetic reconstructions of the uTol and suggest that the debate about its topology is not settled.We notably hypothesize the existence of horizontal gene transfers between ancestral Asgards and proto-eukaryotes that could result in the observed abnormal behaviors of some Asgard ESPs and universal marker proteins.This hypothesis is relevant regardless of the scenario considered regarding eukaryogenesis.it implies that the Asgards were already diversified before the last eukaryotic common ancestor and shared the same biotopes with proto-eukaryotes.We suggest that some Asgards might be still living in symbiosis today with modern Eukarya.

Efficacy of acupuncture on cardiovascular complications in patients with diabetes mellitus in Korea:A nationwide retrospective cohort

Objective The main aim of this study is to investigate whether acupuncture could be an effective complementary treatment for reducing the risk of macrovascular complications in diabetic patients currently taking antidiabetic medications using a nationwide population-based database.Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study to assess the efficacy of acupuncture on cardiovascular complications in diabetic patients using data from patients between 40 and 79 years of age,newly diagnosed with diabetes between 2003 and 2006,found in the National Health insurance Service-National Sample Cohort(NHiS-NSC)in Korea.From the data,we identified 21,232 diabetic patients who were taking antidiabetic medication between 2003 and 2006.The selected patients were divided into two groups-those who received acupuncture at least three times and those who received no acupuncture(non-acupuncture)in the year following their diagnosis of diabetes.After 1:1 propensity score matching(PSM),each group had 3350 patients,and the observation ceased at the occurrence of a major adverse cardiovascular event(MACE),which was defined as either myocardial infarction,stroke,or death due to cardiovascular cause.Results After PSM,the acupuncture group had a lower incidence of MACE(hazard ratio[HR]:0.87;95%confidence interval[Ci]:0.81-0.94;P=0.0003)and all-cause mortality(HR:0.77;95%Ci:0.70-0.84;Pity(HR:0.75;95%Ci:0.56-1.00;P=0.0485),ischemic heart disease mortality(HR:0.53;95%Ci:0.34-0.84;P=0.006)and circulatory system disease mortality(HR:0.67;95%Ci:0.55-0.82;Pin the acupuncture group than in the non-acupuncture group in the secondary analysis.Conclusion Our results indicate that diabetic patients receiving acupuncture treatment might have a lower risk of MACE,all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality.This population-based retrospective study suggests beneficial effects of acupuncture in preventing macrovascular complications associated with diabetes.

Predictive value of preoperative albumin-bilirubin score and other risk factors for short-term outcomes after open pancreatoduodenectomy

BACKGROUND Pancreatoduodenectomy represents a complex procedure involving extensive organ resection and multiple alimentary reconstructions.it is still associated with high morbidity,even in high-volume centres.Prediction tools including preoperative patient-related factors to preoperatively identify patients at high risk for postoperative complications could enable tailored perioperative management and improve patient outcomes.AiM To evaluate the clinical significance of preoperative albumin-bilirubin score and other risk factors in relation to short-term postoperative outcomes in patients after open pancreatoduodenectomy.METHODS This retrospective study included all patients who underwent open pancreatic head resection(pylorus-preserving pancreatoduodenectomy or Whipple resection)for various pathologies during a five-year period(2017-2021)in a tertiary care setting at University Medical Centre Ljubljana,Slovenia and Cattinara Hospital,Trieste,italy.Short-term postoperative outcomes,namely,postoperative complications,postoperative pancreatic fistula,reoperation,and mortality,were evaluated in association with albumin-bilirubin score and other risk factors.Multiple logistic regression models were built to identify risk factors associated with these short-term postoperative outcomes.RESULTS Data from 347 patients were collected.Postoperative complications,major postoperative complications,postoperative pancreatic fistula,reoperation,and mortality were observed in 52.7%,22.2%,23.9%,21.3%,and 5.2%of patients,respectively.There was no statistically significant association between the albumin-bilirubin score and any of these short-term postoperative complications based on univariate analysis.When controlling for other predictor variables in a logistic regression model,soft pancreatic texture was statistically significantly associated with postoperative complications[odds ratio(OR):2.09;95%confidence interval(95%Ci):1.19-3.67];male gender(OR:2.12;95%Ci:1.15-3.93),soft pancreatic texture(OR:3.06;95%Ci:1.56-5.97),and blo
