BACKGROUND When combined with vanadium salts,catecholamines strongly activate glucose uptake in rat and mouse *** To test whether catecholamines activate glucose transport in human *** The uptake of 2-deoxyglucose(2-DG)was measured in adipocytes isolated from pieces of abdominal subcutaneous tissue removed from women undergoing reconstructive *** approaches with amine oxidase inhibitors,adrenoreceptor agonists and antioxidants were performed to unravel the mechanisms of action of noradrenaline or adrenaline(also named epinephrine).RESULTS In human adipocytes,45-min incubation with 100μmol/L adrenaline or noradrenaline activated 2-DG uptake up to more than one-third of the maximal response to *** stimulation was not reproduced with millimolar doses of dopamine or serotonin and was not enhanced by addition of vanadate to the incubation *** various natural amines and adrenergic agonists tested,no other molecule was more efficient than adrenaline and noradrenaline in stimulating 2-DG *** effect of the catecholamines was not impaired by pargyline and semicarbazide,contrarily to that of benzylamine or methylamine,which are recognized substrates of semicarbazide-sensitive amine *** peroxide at 1 mmol/L activated hexose uptake but not pyrocatechol or benzoquinone,and only the former was potentiated by *** and the phosphoinositide 3-kinase inhibitor wortmannin inhibited adrenaline-induced activation of 2-DG *** High doses of catecholamines exert insulin-like actions on glucose transport in human *** submillimolar doses,vanadium did not enhance this catecholamine activation of glucose ***,this dismantles our previous suggestion to combine the metal ion with catecholamines to improve the benefit/risk ratio of vanadium-based antidiabetic approaches.

Most salmonid taxa have an anadromous life history strategy, whereby fish migrate to saltwater habitats for a growth period before returning to freshwater habitats for spawning. Moreover, several species are characterized by different life history tactics whereby resident and anadromous forms may occur in genetically differentiated populations within a same species, as well as polymorphism within a population. The molecular mechanisms underlying the physiological differences between anadromous and resident forms during the first transition from freshwater to saltwater environments are only partially understood. Insofar re- search has typically focused on species of the genus Salmo. Here, using a 16,000 cDNA array, we tested the hypothesis that ana- dromous brook charr Salvelinus fontinalis are characterized by differences in their transcriptome relative to resident brook charr before the anadromous fish migration. Families originating from parapatric populations of anadromous and resident charr were reared in controlled environments mimicking natural temperature and photoperiod, and sampled in spring, while still in fresh wa- ter. While anadromous and resident charr showed similar transcriptome profiles in white muscle, they were characterized by striking differences in their gill transcriptome profiles. Genes that were upregulated in the gills of anadromous charr were princi- pally involved in metabolism （mitochondrial electron transport chain, glucose metabolism, and protein synthesis）, development （tissue differentiation） and innate immunity. We discuss the nature of these transcriptomic differences in relation to molecular mechanisms underlying the expression of anadromous and resident life history tactics and suggest that the anadromous charr express some of the molecular processes present in other migratory salmonids [Current Zoology 58 （1）： 158-170, 2012].

Temperature distribution during polymer sheet reheat phase in thermoforming is the focus of the research, which directly affects the quality of the final products. There are 3 ways of heat transfer that affect temperature distribution during the sheet heat process, which are conduction, convection, and radiation. The work aims to find the analogy of electrical and thermal parameters for electro-thermal model including the three impacts, and also to use the method of finite element analysis to get the simulation result of temperature distribution.

EVs （electric vehicles） have been widely accepted as a promising solution for reducing oil consumption, air pollution and greenhouse gas emission. The number of EVs is growing very fast over the years. However, the high adoption of EVs will impose a burden on the power system, especially for neighborhood level network. In this paper, we propose a mixed control framework for EV charging scheduling to mitigate its impact on the power network. A metric for modeling customer＇s satisfaction is also proposed to compare the user satisfaction for different algorithms. The impacts of the proposed algorithms on EV charging cost, EV penetration and peak power reduction are evaluated with real data for a neighborhood level network. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

The "onion model" approach is proposed to optimize drying and associated processes that form an integrated drying system. The approach consists of first optimizing the core of the system formed of a dryer and drying process and then extending optimization for the shell comprising both downstream and upstream operations. The problem is illustrated by multiobjective optimization and pinch analysis of the heat pump assisted dryer.

Background and Objectives: Asthma is a heterogeneous disease where patient severity can be classified according to various models based on numerous variables. Large collections of well-phenotyped subjects are needed to find distinct clusters of patients for personalized medicine and future genetic studies. The objective of this study is to describe the collection of the Quebec City Case-Control Asthma Cohort and to identify homogeneous subgroups of asthma patients based on clinical characteristics. Methods: This cohort is part of an ongoing project initiated in 2007 to elucidate the genetic basis of asthma. All subjects are randomly recruited at the same site following advertisements. Subjects are unrelated French Canadian white adults 18 years of age or older. Each participant underwent a spirometry, methacholine challenge, and allergy skin-prick tests. Blood was collected for DNA, cell counts and total serum IgE measurements. So far, 982 subjects have been recruited and classified as cases (n = 566) or controls (n = 416). We performed factor and cluster analyses on collected phenotypes from this set to identify subgroups of phenotypically similar asthmatic patients. Results: Factor analysis with 13 variables led to the selection of five factors: lung function, numbers of allergens, blood eosinophil percentage, smoking status and age. K-means cluster analysis on the reduced dataset produced four significantly different groups with the following characteristics: smoking history, low atopy and low lung function, high atopy, and young non-smoking with average atopy. Conclusions: The Quebec City Case-Control Asthma Cohort is a new resource for local and collaborative clinical and genetic research on asthma. This new collection reveals distinct multivariate phenotypes of adult asthma that are likely to be important for future genetic studies and targeted therapies.

Background： The disclosure of the poplar genome strengthens its position as well-established model organism. Populus has been subject of several proteome studies, but up to date no comparative study was performed on the extraction method of soluble proteins for this species. The extraction is the most critical step in two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and each extraction method has its advantages, disadvantages and limitations. Therefore protein extraction methods should be optimized for each tissue before starting an experimental setup. In prospect of future DIGE （Differential Gel electrophoresis） experiments for the investigation of the effects of cadmium and inoculation with plant growth promoting bacteria at the proteome level, the aim of this study was to optimize an extraction method for soluble proteins of poplar leaves and roots. Results： The acetone-phenol extraction method was found to be the most suited, rendering a high spot number and low background interference. During further optimization, several critical steps in the extraction method were revealed. Conclusion： Aiming to optimize the extraction of soluble leaf and root proteins of Populus deltoides × （trichocarpa× deltoides） compatible with DIGE analysis, a protocol rendering high reproducibility, low background interference and a high spot number was established, however no novel insights were acquired.
