Cone-beam computed tomography noise reduction method based on U-Net with convolutional block attention module in proton therapy

Cone-beam computed tomography(CBCT) is mostly used for position verification during the treatment process. However,severe image artifacts in CBCT hinder its direct use in dose calculation and adaptive radiation therapy re-planning for proton therapy. In this study, an improved U-Net neural network named CBAM-U-Net was proposed for CBCT noise reduction in proton therapy, which is a CBCT denoised U-Net network with convolutional block attention modules. The datasets contained 20 groups of head and neck images. The CT images were registered to CBCT images as ground truth. The original CBCT denoised U-Net network, sCTU-Net, was trained for model performance comparison. The synthetic CT(SCT) images generated by CBAM-U-Net and the original sCTU-Net are called CBAM-SCT and U-Net-SCT images, respectively. The HU accuracies of the CT, CBCT, and SCT images were compared using four metrics: mean absolute error(MAE), root mean square error(RMSE), peak signal-to-noise ratio(PSNR), and structure similarity index measure(SSIM). The mean values of the MAE, RMSE, PSNR, and SSIM of CBAM-SCT images were 23.80 HU, 64.63 HU, 52.27 dB, and 0.9919, respectively,which were superior to those of the U-Net-SCT images. To evaluate dosimetric accuracy, the range accuracy was compared for a single-energy proton beam. The γ-index pass rates of a 4 cm × 4 cm scanned field and simple plan were calculated to compare the effects of the noise reduction capabilities of the original U-Net and CBAM-U-Net on the dose calculation results. CBAM-U-Net reduced noise more effectively than sCTU-Net, particularly in high-density tissues. We proposed a CBAM-U-Net model for CBCT noise reduction in proton therapy. Owing to the excellent noise reduction capabilities of CBAM-U-Net, the proposed model provided relatively explicit information regarding patient tissues. Moreover, it maybe be used in dose calculation and adaptive treatment planning in the future.

Effects of spironolactone on electrical and structural remodeling of atrium in congestive heart failure dogs

Background Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system has been demonstrated to be associated with both congestive heart failure （CHF） and atrial fibrillation （AF）. This study investigated the effects of spironolactone, a kind of aldosterone antagonist, on atrial electrical remodeling and fibrosis in CHF dogs induced by chronic rapid ventricular pacing. Methods Twenty one dogs were randomly divided into sham-operated group, control group, and spironolactone group. In control group and spironolactone group, dogs were ventricular paced at 220 beats per minute for 6 weeks. Additionally, spironolactone at 15 ***.d1 was given to dogs 1 week before rapid ventricular pacing until pacing stopped. Transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiographic examinations were performed to detect structural and functional changes of the atrium. Swan2 Ganz floating catheters were used to measure hemadynamics variances. Atrial effective refractory period （AERP）, AERP dispersion （AERPd） conduction velocity （CV） were determined. The inducib atrial fibrosis was quantified with Masson staining. intra- and inter-atrium conduction time （CT） and intra-atrium ity and duration of AF were also measured in all groups. Finally, Results AERP did not change significantly after dogs were ventricular paced for 6 weeks. However, AERPd, intra- and inter-atrium CT increased significantly, and CV decreased apparently, which was negatively correlated to the atrial fibrosis （r=-0.74, P〈0.05）. Simultaneously, left atriums were enlarged and cardiac hemadynamics worsened in pacing dogs. Although spironolactone could not affect cardiac hemadynamics effectively, it can obviously improve left atrial ejection fraction （P〈0.05）. Spironolactone treatment did not alter AERP duration, but this medicine dramatically decreased AERPd （P〈0.05）, shortened intra- and inter-atrium conduction time （P〈0.05）, and increased atrium CV. ATP6AP2,a regulator of LRP6/β-catenin protein trafficking,promotes Wnt/β-catenin signaling and bone formation in a cell type dependent manner

The organic-rich mudstones and dolostones of the Permian Fengcheng Formation(Fm.)are typically alkaline lacustrine source rocks,which are typified by impressively abundantβ-*** β-carotane has been well acknowledged as an effective indicator of biological sources or depositional ***,the specific biological sources of β-carotane and the coupling control of biological sources and environmental factors on the enrichment of β-carotane in the Fengcheng *** *** on a comprehensive investigation of the bulk,molecular geochemistry,and organic petrology of sedimentary rocks and the biochemistry of phytoplankton in modern alkaline lakes,we proposed a new understanding of the biological precursors of β-carotane and elucidated the enrichment mechanism of β-carotane in the Fengcheng *** results show that the biological precursors crucially control the enrichment of β-carotane in the Fengcheng *** haloalkaliphilic cyanobacteria are the primary biological sources of β-carotane,which is suggested by a good positive correlation between the 2-methylhopane index,7-+8-methyl heptadecanes/C_(max),C_(29%),and β-carotane/C_(max)in sedimentary rocks and the predominance of cyanobacteria with abundantβ-carotene in modern alkaline *** enrichment of β-carotane requires the reducing condition,and the paleoredox state that affects the enrichment of β-carotane appears to have a *** paleoclimate conditions do not considerably impact the enrichment of β-carotane,but they have some influence on the water's paleosalinity by affecting evaporation and *** it does not directly affect the enrichment of β-carotane in the Fengcheng Fm.,paleosalinity does have an impact on the cyanobacterial precursor supply and the preservation conditions.

A unified stochastic damage model for concrete based on multi-scale energy dissipation analysis

This work proposes a unified damage model for concrete within the framework of stochastic damage mechanics. Based on the micro-meso stochastic fracture model(MMSF), the nonlinear energy dissipation process of the microspring from nanoscale to microscale is investigated. In nanoscale, the rate process theory is adopted to describe the crack growth rate;therefore, the corresponding energy dissipation caused by a representative crack propagation can be obtained. The scale gap from nanoscale to microscale is bridged by a crack hierarchy model. Thus, the total energy dissipated by all cracks from the nanoscale to the microscale is gained. It is found that the fracture strain of the microspring can be derived from the above multi-scale energy dissipation analysis. When energy dissipation is regarded as some microdamage to the microspring, the constitutive law of the microspring is no longer linearly elastic, as previously assumed. By changing the expression of the damage evolution law from fracture strain to energy dissipation threshold, the new damage evolution model is derived. The proposed model can not only replicate the original static model but also extend to cases of rate dependence. By deriving the fracture strain under different strain rates, the rate sensitivity of concrete materials can be reflected. The model parameters can be conveniently obtained by identifying them with experimental data. Finally, several numerical examples are presented to verify the proposed model.

The pseudorabies virus(PRV)is identified as a double-helical DNA virus responsible for causing Aujeszky's disease,which results in considerable economic impacts *** enzyme tryptophanyl-tRNA synthetase 2(WARS2),a mitochondrial protein involved in protein synthesis,is recognized for its broad expression and vital role in the translation *** findings of our study showed an increase in both mRNA and protein levels of WARS2 following PRV infection in both cell cultures and animal *** WARS2 expression via RNA interference in PK-15 cells led to a reduction in PRV infection rates,whereas enhancing WARS2 expression resulted in increased infection ***,the activation of WARS2 in response to PRV was found to be reliant on the cGAS/STING/TBK1/IRF3 signaling pathway and the interferon-alpha receptor-1,highlighting its regulation via the type I interferon signaling *** analysis revealed that reducing WARS2 levels hindered PRV's ability to promote protein and lipid *** research provides novel evidence that WARS2 facilitates PRV infection through its management of protein and lipid levels,presenting new avenues for developing preventative and therapeutic measures against PRV infections.
