Biocompatibility and biosafety of butterfly wings for the clinical use of tissue-engineered nerve grafts

In a previous study, we used natural butterfly wings as a cell growth matrix for tissue engineering materials and found that the surface of different butterfly wings had different ultramicrostructures, which can affect the qualitative growth of cells and regulate cell growth, metabolism, and gene expression. However, the biocompatibility and biosafety of butterfly wings must be studied. In this study, we found that Sprague-Dawley rat dorsal root ganglion neurons could grow along the structural stripes of butterfly wings, and Schwann cells could normally attach to and proliferate on different species of butterfly wings. The biocompatibility and biosafety of butterfly wings were further examined through subcutaneous implantation in Sprague-Dawley rats, intraperitoneal injection in Institute of Cancer Research mice, intradermal injection in rabbits, and external application to guinea pigs. Our results showed that butterfly wings did not induce toxicity, and all examined animals exhibited normal behaviors and no symptoms, such as erythema or edema. These findings suggested that butterfly wings possess excellent biocompatibility and biosafety and can be used as a type of tissue engineering material. This study was approved by the Experimental Animal Ethics Committee of Jiangsu Province of China(approval No. 20190303-18) on March 3, 2019.

Objective:To investigate the protective effect of Chinese herbal formula Huangqin Decoction(HQD)on ulcerative colitis mouse model induced by dextran sulphate sodium(DSS)and human intestinal epithelial cell injury induced by tumour necrosis factor-α(TNF-α).Methods:In vivo,30 male C57BL/6 mice were divided into 5 groups using a random number table(n=6 per group),including control,DSS,5-aminosalicylic acid(5-ASA),HQD low-(HQD-L)and high-dose(HQD-H)groups.The colitis mouse model was established by 3%(w/v)DSS water for 5 days.Meanwhile,mice in the HQD-L,HQD-H and 5-ASA groups were administrated with 100,200 mg/kg HQD or 100 mg/kg 5-ASA,respectively,once daily by gavage.After 9 days of administration,the body weight,disease activity index(DAI)score and colon length of mice were measured,the pathological changes of colons were analyzed by hematoxylin-eosin staining(HE)staining,and the levels of serum interleukin(IL)-6,IL-1βand TNF-αwere measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay.In vitro,the human colon epithelial normal cells(FHC cells)were exposed to HQD(0.6 mg/mL)for 12 h and then treated with TNF-α(10 ng/mL)for 24 h.The tight junction(TJ)protein expression levels of Claudin-4 and Occludin,and the protein phosphorylation levels of p65 and inhibitor of nuclear factor kappaB(NF-κB)-α(IκBα)were measured by Western blot.Results:In vivo,compared with the DSS group,HQD-H treatment attenuated the weight loss and reduced DAI score of mice on the 8th day(Pgulated Occludin and Claudin-4 protein expressions and inhibited p-p65 and p-IκBαlevels in FHC cells compared with the TNF-αgroup(P<0.

The inhomogeneous microstructure of the Ni-based superalloys used for turbine disks was an intolerable defect for the mechanical performance.The effects of the distribution ofγ'precipitate,forging temperature,and strain level on the microstructure evolution of GH4730 alloy were investigated by EBSD during hot deformation.The results showed that the heterogeneous factor peaked at the transition temperature from the single-phase to the double-phase region.The coupling effect of heat and stress led to the heterogeneous precipitation and distribution ofγ'phase during the transition region,which was the main reason for the formation of inhomogeneous microstructures.The coherentγ'phases of approximately 0.3μm were diffusely distributed inside the large grains,increasing the grain strength,making recrystallization refinement difficult,and thus forming large unrecrystallized grains.The incoherentγ'phases with a size of approximately 1.1μm located at the grain boundaries and pinned the grain boundaries,and thus the accumulated strain at the grain boundaries caused the occurrence of discontinuous dynamic recrystallization and promoted continuous refinement of the grains.The microstructure evolution of new Ni-based superalloys during hot forging was focused,and the formation mechanism of inhomogeneous microstructure and control measures was explained.A theoretical basis for improving the microstructure homogeneity of the new cast and wrought superalloys was provided.

The density and viscosity ratios on partially liquid-filled sloshing with baffle have been investigated numerically in this study.As the key to success in the present simulation,the Coupled Level Set and the Volume of Fluid(CLSVOF)method and the Immersed Boundary(IB)method are used to capture gas/liquid and fluid/structure interfaces,respectively.Within the CLSVOF method,surface normal in weighting factors is calculated by the level set function,resulting in a more accurate solution.Furthermore,the Tangent of Hyperbola for INterface Capturing(THINC)coupled with the Weighted Linear Interface Calculation(WLIC)scheme is used for capturing moving interface.As a standard practice,we first validate the code by comparing it with experimental results of liquid sloshing,which involves large deformation of interface.In addition to the validation study of the present method,the problems of liquid sloshing with baffle are investigated to understand kinematics and dynamics behaviors under different density and viscosity ratios.

Lobane-type diterpenoids are not frequently discovered from marine soft corals. In this paper, three new lobane type diterpenes, 13-methoxyloba-8,10,15(16),17(18)-tetraene(1), 8,10,13(15)Z,16 E-lobatetraene(2) and 19-hydroxy-lobatetraene(3), and a new natural compound, 17,18-epoxyloba-16-acetoxy-8,10,13(15)-trien(4), co-occurring with a known related diterpenoid, 18-methoxyloba-8,10,13(15),16(17)-tetraene(5), were isolated from the South China Sea soft coral Sinularia polydactyla. The structures of new compounds were determined by extensive spectroscopic analysis and by comparison with those reported in the literature. In bioassay, all the isolates were inactive on antibacterial, PTP1 B inhibitory, and immunological activities. This study increased the chemical diversity of marine diterpenoids.

Because of its paramount importance in the successful industrial control strategy of a given heat exchanger network(HEN),the control structure designs for providing appropriate manipulated variable(MV)and controlled variable pairings have received considerable attention.However,quite frequently HENs with such control structures face the problem of hard constraints,typically holding the HENs at less controlled operating space.So both the MV pairings and the above control pairings should be considered to design a control structure.This paper investigates the systematic incorporation of the two pairings,and presents a methodology for designing such two-tier control structure.This is developed based on the sequential strategy,coupling an indirect-tier with direct-tier control structure design,wherein the intention is realized in the former stage and the latter is implemented for further optimization.The MV identification and pairing are achieved through variations in heat load of heat exchangers to design the indirect-tier control structure.Then the direct-tier control structure is followed the relative gain array pairing rules.With the proposed methodology,on the one hand,it generates an explicit connection between the MV pairings and the HEN configuration,and the quantitative interaction measure is improved to avoid the multiple solutions to break the relationship among all the control pairings into individuals;on the other hand,a two-tier control structure reveals control potentials and control system design requirements,this may avoid complex and economically unfavourable control and HEN structures.The application of proposed framework is illustrated with two cases involving the dynamic simulation analysis,the quantitative assessment and the random test.

Abelmoschus manihot(L.)Medik.(A.manihot)is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine with a variety of pharmacological properties.It was first recorded in Jiayou Materia Medica dating back to the Song dynasty to eliminate urinary tract irritation by clearing away heat and diuretic effect.However,its pharmacological action on urinary tract infections has not been investigated.The present study aims to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of A.manihot on a mouse model of lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-induced cystitis.The results showed that A.manihot decreased white blood cell(WBC)count in urine sediments of the cystitis mice,alleviated bladder congestion,edema,as well as histopathological damage,reduced the expression levels of tumor necrosis factor-α,interleukin-6,and interleukin-1βsimultaneously.Moreover,A.manihot administration significantly downregulated the expression levels of TLR4,MYD88,IκBα,p-IκBα,NF-κB p65,and p-NF-κB p65 in LPS-induced cystitis mice.These findings demonstrated the protective effect of A.manihot against LPS-induced cystitis,which is attributed to its anti-inflammatory profile by suppressing TLR4/MYD88/NF-κB pathways.Our results suggest that A.manihot could be a potential candidate for cystitis treatment.

Development and Field Application of Phosphogypsum-Based Soil Subgrade Stabilizers

A phosphogypsum-based subgrade stabilizer(PBSS)was formulated using industrial by-product phosphogypsum(PG),mixed with slag and calcium-silicon-rich active material(GSR).The active powder(AP)was used to modify PBSS,and PBSS-AP was obtained.PBSS and PBSS-AP were each mixed with 10%silty soil,and cement and lime(CAL:5%lime+2%cement)were used as the traditional material for comparative experiments.Samples were cured under standard conditions,and tested for unconfined compressive strength(UCS),water stability,volume expansion,and leachate,to explore the stabilization effect of the three solidified materials on silty soil.The results showed that the comprehensive performance of sility soil mixed with 12%PBSS-AP was the best.The CaO,SiO_(2)and Al_(2)O_(3)provided by PG,Slag and GSR will react with water to form a stable C-S-H gel,which is conducive to stabilizing the soil.Field application results showed that the compaction exceeded 95%,the deflection was 144.9 mm,and UCS was 2.5 MPa after 28 days.These findings indicated that PBSS-AP is an effective stabilizer for subgrade soils.

A Possible X-ray Quasi-periodic Oscillation in the Narrow-line Seyfert 1 Galaxy Mrk 142

A possible quasi-periodic oscillation(QPO) at frequency 7.045 × 10-5Hz is found in the narrow-line Seyfert 1galaxy Mrk 142 in the data of XMM-Newton collected on 2020 April 11. We find that the QPO signal is statistically significantly larger than the 5σ level and highly coherent with quality factor Q > 5 at the 0.3–10 keV band by using the method of the Lomb–Scargle Periodogram, the Weighted Wavelet Z-transform and the REDFIT.We analyze the data in 0.3–0.6 keV, 0.6–1 keV, 1–3 keV and 3–10 keV energy bands, and find obvious QPO signals at 0.3–0.6 keV and 1–3 keV bands. We then analyze the time-average spectra and time variability at the QPO frequency of 7.045 × 10-5Hz, and use a model to fit them. We find that the QPO signal mainly comes from the X-ray hot corona.
