Validation of atmospheric chemistry measurements from MIPAS,SCIAMACHY,GOMOS onboard ENVISAT by observations of balloon-borne MIPAS-B

In order to validate the atmospheric chemistry measurements by MIPAS,SCIAMACHY,and GOMOS onboard the ENVISAT,three flights of the balloon-borne Michelson Interferometer for Passive Sounding(MIPAS-B) were carried out in 2002 and 2003 at Aire sur l'Adour(France 44°N,0°E) and Esrange,kiruna(Sweden 68°N,21°E).The validation campaign activities are summarized in this paper.The MIPAS-B instrument and its data processing procedure as well as the validation approaches are discussed in detail.The satellite and balloon measurements are matched with high coincidence in time and space,allowing a coincident approach to be applied for their comparisons.Further,a trajectory model is used to confirm and enhance the statistical significance of the validation.The validation results show that MIPAS measurements of accuracy for temperature,H2O,O3,HNO3,CH4,N2O,and NO2 are good in the altitude range of 8-39 km(No2,22-39 km).And the precision is good between the altitudes of 15-33 km(No2,22-23 km).However,some exceptions were also found for temperature,H2O,HNO3,and NO2.The SCIAMACHY data of accuracy for O3 and NO2 are within expectations between the altitudes 9-38 km except for O3 in 28-38 km.The GOMOS data about O3 and NO2 are promising according to the preliminary comparison results.

Measuring Social Solidarity During Crisis:The Role of Design Choices

Building on our previous work,we assess how social solidarity towards migrants and refugees has changed before and after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic,by collecting and analyzing a large,novel,and longitudinal dataset of migration-related tweets.To this end,we first annotate above 2000 tweets for(anti-)solidarity expressions towards immigrants,utilizing two annotation approaches(experts vs.crowds).On these annotations,we train a BERT model with multiple data augmentation strategies,which performs close to the human upper bound.We use this high-quality model to automatically label over 240000 tweets between September 2019 and June 2021.We then assess the automatically labeled data for how statements related to migrant(anti-)solidarity developed over time,before and during the COVID-19 crisis.Our findings show that migrant solidarity became increasingly salient and contested during the early stages of the pandemic but declined in importance since late 2020,with tweet numbers falling slightly below pre-pandemic levels in summer 2021.During the same period,the share of anti-solidarity tweets increased in a sub-sample of COVID-19-related tweets.These findings highlight the importance of long-term observation,pre-and post-crisis comparison,and sampling in research interested in crisis related effects.As one of our main contributions,we outline potential pitfalls of an analysis of social solidarity trends:for example,the ratio of solidarity and anti-solidarity statements depends on the sampling design,i.e.,tweet language,Twitter-user accounts’national identification(country known or unknown)and selection of relevant tweets.In our sample,the share of anti-solidarity tweets is higher in native(German)language tweets and among“anonymous”Twitter users writing in German compared to English-language tweets of users located in Germany.

The concept “fetal programming” shows who still in the intrauterine life, can interfere in factors related to the genesis and development of diseases in childhood, adolescence and adult life. The literature shows that children born to mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are at increased risk for the development of obesity in adulthood, it becomes fundamental to study more about the subject. Obesity is a disease of multifactorial etiology, resulting from complex interactions between genetic and environmental factors. However, the marked increase in its incidence, precocity and severity are not yet fully understood. Several findings suggest that stressor stimuli (e.g. diabetes, nutritional changes) during intrauterine development may promote epigenetic changes, as well as affect mitochondrial metabolism, which may modulate fetal development and predispose to the late development of diseases. Despite the considerable amount of evidence accumulated about intrauterine programming for diseases of adult life, the determinant mechanisms of such programming are not yet clear.
