Are yarn quality prediction tools useful in the breeding of high yielding and better fibre quality cotton(Gossypium hirsutum L.)?

Cottonspec中纱线质量指数(YQI)的概念是对于给定的棉花,其预报的纱线质量和一个参考棉花的预报纱线质量之比.为比较YQI和工业上广泛应用的纤维质量指数(FQI)和纺纱一致性指数(CSI)的优劣,选取10个国际棉花品种进行纺纱试验,每一个棉花纺制成相同捻度不同支数的两种纱线,并用YQI和FQI,CSI指标分别对每种纱线进行质量测试.实验结果表明,YQI比两种传统的纤维指数优越,即YQI和纱线质量的相关性比两种传统的纤维质量指数要好.

为了评估澳大利亚联邦科学工业研究组织(CSIRO)培育的长绒棉(ALS)的纺纱性能,比较国内棉纺企业的纺纱质量水准,CSIRO和国内6所大型棉纺企业对ALS进行纺纱标杆试验.试验结果显示各企业之间在纱线质量上有很大的差别.为此,利用CSIRO研制开发的棉纺纱线质量预报软件Cottonspec,引入纱线质量指数(纱线实测质量和预测质量之比)预测纱线质量.结果表明,对于质量管理良好的企业,Cottonspec软件的预报效果理想,纱线条干的预报误差小于2%,纱线强度预报误差小于3%,且ALS可以用于生产50S以上的高质量细纱.

Biliary stenting is clinically effective in relieving both malignant and non-malignant obstructions. However, there are high failure rates associated with tumor ingrowth and epithelial overgrowth as well as internally from biofilm development and subsequent clogging. Within the last decade, the use of prophylactic drug eluting stents as a means to reduce stent failure has been investigated. In this review we provide an overview of the current research on drug eluting biliary stents. While there is limited human trial data regarding the clinical benefit of drug eluting biliary stents in preventing stent obstruction, recent research suggests promise regarding their safety and potential efficacy.

Many African countries are prone to numerous hazardous events,exacerbated by the vulnerability of their rapidly increasing population and leading to frequent disasters that often have dire fiscal and development ***,there is declining sensitivity to these risks,contrary to the conventional wisdom of disaster management(DM)*** primary aim of this research is to understand the constraints and/or challenges limiting the ability of contemporary African DM systems/institutional frameworks from implementing adequate disaster risk reduction(DRR)*** a qualitative,case study based research strategy,this research investigates resistance to the effective implementation of DM/DRR within Cameroon’s contemporary DM system by using the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030 guiding principles for DRR as *** findings reveal the existence of resistance factors that particularly complicate the communication,decision making,and coordination of DRR activities,the provision of resources,aspects of international assistance,as well as DRR planning and *** authors argue that such resistance factors contribute to making Cameroon’s DM system more reactive and further undermine risk *** article concludes by offering key recommendations that have the potential to alleviate the identified resistance factors as well as strengthen Cameroon’s DM,particularly in relation to capacity building,training,research development,and organizational resilience.

Randomized trial in malignant biliary obstruction:Plastic vs partially covered metal stents

AIM:To compare efficacy and complications of par-tially covered self-expandable metal stent(pcSEMS)to plastic stent(PS)in patients treated for malignant,infrahilar biliary ***:Multicenter prospective randomized clinical trial with treatment allocation to a pcWallstent(SEMS)or a 10 French *** patients aged≥18,for infrahilar malignant biliary obstruction and a Karnofsky performance scale index>60%from 6 participating North American university *** endpoint was time to stent failure,with secondary outcomes of death,adverse events,Karnofsky performance score and short-form-36 scale administered on a three-monthly basis for up to 2 *** analyses were performed for stent failure and death,with Cox proportional hazards regression models to determine significant predictive ***:Eighty-five patients were accrued over 37mo,42 were randomized to the SEMS group and 83patients were available for *** to stent failure was 385.3±52.5 d in the SEMS and 153.3±19.8 d in the PS group,P=*** to death did not differ between groups(192.3±23.4 d for SEMS vs211.5±28.0 d for PS,P=0.70).The only significant predictor was treatment allocation,relating to the time to stent failure(P=0.01).Amongst other measured outcomes,only cholangitis differed,being more common in the PS group(4.9%vs 24.5%,P=0.029).The small number of patients in follow-up limits longitudinal assessments of performance and quality of *** an initially planned 120 patients,only 85 patients were ***:Partially covered SEMS result in a longer duration till stent failure without increased complication rates,yet without accompanying measurable benefits in survival,performance,or quality of life.

Hurricane Occurrence and Seasonal Activity: An Analysis of the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season

This article provides a reckoning of the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season’s place in history to ascertain how unique it was from other hurricane seasons. A research strategy involving qualitative, descriptive and analytical research approaches, including content analysis, sequential description of events and comparative analysis, were used to assess how and why the 2017 AHS season is distinct from others. Findings reveal that the 2017 AHS was extraordinary by all meteorological standards—in many ways, being hyperactive, and producing a frenetic stretch of huge, long-lived and dramatic, tropical storms including 10 hurricanes. The season was, arguably, the most expensive in history and will be remembered for the unprecedented devastation caused by the season’s major hurricanes (Harvey, Irma and Maria). While the extremely active season can be attributed to anomalously high, climate change induced, hurricane friendly environmental conditions in the Atlantic basin, early forecasts did not also predict the hyperactivity of the season. This article, therefore, advances for a more strategic anticipatory and proactive approach in dealing with these severe storms, underpinned by effective mitigation of their effects. Furthermore, the article adds value to the literature examining extreme natural forces, particularly in understanding variations in the ferocity of the meteorological events associated with hurricane seasons.
