Cloud-based storage and computing for remote sensing big data:a technical review

The rapid growth of remote sensing big data(RSBD)has attracted considerable attention from both academia and *** the progress of computer technologies,conventional computing implementations have become technically inefficient for processing *** computing is effective in activating and mining large-scale heterogeneous data and has been widely applied to RSBD over the past *** study performs a technical review of cloud-based RSBD storage and computing from an interdisciplinary viewpoint of remote sensing and computer ***,we elaborate on four critical technical challenges resulting from the scale expansion of RSBD applications,*** storage,metadata management,data homogeneity,and computing ***,we introduce state-of-the-art cloud-based data management technologies for RSBD *** unit for manipulating remote sensing data has evolved due to the scale expansion and use of novel technologies,which we name the RSBD data *** data models are suggested,***,ARD,data cubes,and composite ***,we summarize recent research on the application of various cloud-based parallel computing technologies to RSBD computing ***,we categorize the architectures of mainstream RSBD *** research provides a comprehensive review of the fundamental issues of RSBD for computing experts and remote sensing researchers.

Evidence for the Lower Continental Crustal Origin of the Xihuashan Granite

The Xihuashan granite is typically representative of the tungsten-bearing granites widespread in theNanling area of South China. It was considered in the past to have been formed by partial melting of the upper continental crust, with its source rocks most probably of the Sinian or Cambrian. However, detailed REE analyses, studies of the Rb-Sr isotopic system and melting experiments of metasedimentary rocks all argue against this idea. Moreover, stable isotopic data also indicate a deep source origin for S, C, H and O. The authors thus propose a genetic concept of the lower continental crustal source of the Xihuashan granite, and point out further that tungsten deposits related to this kind of granite are linked in some way to deep-seated structure and concentrated along NNE-NE- and ENE-striking major deep fault belts above the transitional zone between mantle uplift and mantle depression.

This paper proposes a scheme for password management by storing password encryptions on a server. The method involves having the encryption key split into a share for the user and one for the server. The user’s share shall be based solely on a selected passphrase. The server’s share shall be generated from the user’s share and the encryption key. The security and trust are achieved by performing both encryption and decryption on the client side. We also address the issue of countering dictionary attack by providing a further enhancement of the scheme.

Pressures on natural resources are increasing and a number of challenges need to be overcome to meet the needs of a growing population in a period of environmental *** of these environmental issues can be monitored using remotely sensed Earth Observations(EO)data that are increasingly available from a number of freely and openly accessible ***,the full information potential of EO data has not been yet *** remain still underutilized mainly because of their complexity,increasing volume,and the lack of efficient processing *** Data Cubes(DC)are a new paradigm aiming to realize the full potential of EO data by lowering the barriers caused by these Big data challenges and providing access to large spatio-temporal data in an analysis ready *** and regular provision of Analysis Ready Data(ARD)will significantly reduce the burden on EO data ***,ARD are not commonly produced by data providers and therefore getting uniform and consistent ARD remains a challenging *** paper presents an approach to enable rapid data access and pre-processing to generate ARD using interoperable services *** approach has been tested and validated generating Landsat ARD while building the Swiss Data Cube.

In C4 photosynthesis, pyruvate orthophosphate dikinase （PPDK） catalyzes the regeneration of phospho- enolpyruvate in the carbon shuttle pathway. Although the biochemical function of PPDK in maize is well characterized, a genetic analysis of PPDK has not been reported. In this study, we use the maize transposable elements Nlutator and Ds to generate multiple mutant alleles of PPDK. Loss-of- function mutants are seedling lethal, even when plants were grown under 2% CO2, and they show very low capacity for CO2 assimilation, indicating C4 photosynthesis is essential in maize. Using RNA-seq and GC-MS technologies, we exam- ined the transcriptional and metabolic responses to a deficiency in PPDK activity. These results indicate loss of PPDK results in downregulation of gene expression ofenzymes of the C4 cycle, the Calvin cycle, and components of photochemistry. Furthermore, the loss of PPDK did not change Kranz anatomy, indicating that this metabolic defect in the C4 cycle did not impinge on the morphological differentiation of C4 characters. However, sugar metabolism and nitrogen utilization were altered in the mutants. An interaction between light intensity and genotype was also detected from transcriptome profiling, suggesting altered transcriptional and metabolic responses to environmental and endogenous signals in the PPDK mutants.

Advances in minimally invasive neonatal colorectal surgery

Over the last two decades, advances in laparoscopic surgery and minimally invasive techniques have transformed the operative management of neonatal colorectal surgery for conditions such as anorectal malformations (ARMs) and Hirschsprung’s disease. Evolution of surgical care has mainly occurred due to the use of laparoscopy, as opposed to a laparotomy, for intra-abdominal procedures and the development of trans-anal techniques. This review describes these advances and outlines the main minimally invasive techniques currently used for management of ARMs and Hirschsprung’s disease. There does still remain significant variation in the procedures used and this review aims to report the current literature comparing techniques with an emphasis on the short- and long-term clinical outcomes.

Reproducing Cochlear Signals by a Minimal Electroacoustic Model

Transient-Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions (TEOAEs) were studied, with particular reference to their subject-dependent features. To this end, an electric model of the ear was implemented and validated. Simulated and natural TEOAEs were analyzed through a nonlinear analysis technique. The simulated signals were able to reproduce the dynamical features of the experimentally observed TEOAEs and, most importantly, the natural variability among individuals. The unexpected inverse relation between model complexity and adherence to the natural signals is commented.

Significance of native PLGA nanoparticles in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease pathology

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is believed to be triggered by increased levels/aggregation of β-amyloid (Aβ) peptides. At present, there is no effective disease-modifying treatment for AD. Here, we evaluated the therapeutic potential of FDA-approved native poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) nanoparticles on Aβ aggregation and in cellular/ animal models of AD. Our results showed that native PLGA can not only suppress the spontaneous aggregation but can also trigger disassembly of preformed Aβ aggregates. Spectroscopic studies, molecular dynamics simu-lations and biochemical analyses revealed that PLGA, by interacting with the hydrophobic domain of Aβ1-42, prevents a conformational shift towards the β-sheet structure, thus precluding the formation and/or triggering disassembly of Aβ aggregates. PLGA-treated Aβ samples can enhance neuronal viability by reducing phosphor-ylation of tau protein and its associated signaling mechanisms. Administration of PLGA can interact with Aβ aggregates and attenuate memory deficits as well as Aβ levels/deposits in the 5xFAD mouse model of AD. PLGA can also protect iPSC-derived neurons from AD patients against Aβ toxicity by decreasing tau phosphorylation. These findings provide unambiguous evidence that native PLGA, by targeting different facets of the Aβ axis, can have beneficial effects in mouse neurons/animal models as well as on iPSC-derived AD neurons - thus signifying its unique therapeutic potential in the treatment of AD pathology.

The Use of Spatial Sampling Designs in Business Surveys

An innovative use of spatial sampling designs is here presented. Sampling methods which consider spatial locations of statistical units are already used in agricultural and environmental contexts, while they have never been exploited for establishment surveys. However, the rapidly increasing availability of geo- referenced information about business units makes that possible. In business studies, it may indeed be important to take into account the presence of spatial autocorrelation or spatial trends in the variables of interest, in order to have more precise and efficient estimates. The opportunity of using the most innovative spatial sampling designs in business surveys, in order to produce samples that are well spread in space, is here tested by means of Monte Carlo experiments. For all designs, the Horvitz-Thompson estimator of the population total is used both with equal and unequal inclusion probabilities. The efficiency of sampling designs is evaluated in terms of relative RMSE and efficiency gain compared with designs ignoring the spatial information. Furthermore, an evaluation of spatially balancing samples is also conducted.
