Oviductal epithelial cells selected boar sperm according to their functional characteristics

The interaction of oviductal epithelial cells （OECs） with the spermatozoa has beneficial effects on the sperm functions. The aim of this study is to evaluate the in vitro fertilizing capacity of incubating spermatozoa previously selected by density gradient in OEC and determinate some sperm characteristics that could explain the results obtained. In this study, we assessed in vitro fertilization （IVF）, tyrosine phosphorylation, phosphatidylserine translocation, nuclear DNA fragmentation, and chromatin decondensation. Three experimental sperm groups, previously selected by Percoll gradient, were established according to the origin of the sperm used for IVF：（i） W30 group： spermatozoa were incubated with oocytes in the absence of OEC; （ii） NB group： after sperm incubation in OEC, the unbound spermatozoa were incubated with oocytes, in the absence of OEC; and （iii） B group： after sperm incubation with OEC, the bound spermatozoa were incubated with oocytes in the OEC plates. The results showed that sperm from the NB group led to a lower IVF yield, accompanied by low penetration rates （NB： 19.6%, B： 94.9%, and W30： 62.9%; P 〈 0.001） and problems of nuclear decondensation. Moreover, higher levels of tyrosine phosphorylation were observed in the NB group compared with the W30 and B groups （NB： 58.7%, B： 2.5%, and W30： 4.5%; P 〈 0.01）. A similar trend was observed in phosphatidylserine translocation （NB： 93.7%, B. 5.7%, and W30： 44.2%; P 〈 0.01）. These results demonstrate that the OEC exerts a rigorous degree of sperm selection, even within an already highly selected population of spermatozoa, and can capture the best functional spermatozoa for fertilization.

Importance of sperm morphology during sperm transport and fertilization in mammals

After natural or artificial insemination, the spermatozoon starts a journey from the site of deposition to the place of fertilization. However, only a small subset of the spermatozoa deposited achieves their goal： to reach and fertilize the egg. Factors involved in controlling sperm transport and fertilization include the female reproductive tract environment, cell-cell interactions, gene expression, and phenotypic sperm traits. Some of the significant determinants of fertilization are known （i.e., motility or DNA status）, but many sperm traits are still indecipherable. One example is the influence of sperm dimensions and shape upon transport within the female genital tract towards the oocyte. Biophysical associations between sperm size and motility may influence the progression of spermatozoa through the female reproductive tract, but uncertainties remain concerning how sperm morphology influences the fertilization process, and whether only the sperm dimensions per se are involved. Moreover, such explanations do not allow the possibility that the female tract is capable of distinguishing fertile spermatozoa on the basis of their morphology, as seems to be the case with biochemical, molecular, and genetic properties. This review focuses on the influence of sperm size and shape in evolution and their putative role in sperm transport and selection within the uterus and the ability to fertilize the oocyte.

Effect of genistein supplementation of thawing medium on characteristics of frozen human spermatozoa

In this study, we evaluated the effects of genistein supplementation of the thawing extender on frozen-thawed human semen parameters. We analyzed the effect of supplementation on sperm motility, capacitation （membrane lipid disorder）, reactive oxygen species （ROS） generation, chromatin condensation and DNA damage. Using this preliminary information, it maybe possible to improve the cryopreservation process and reduce the cellular damage. We have confirmed that the isoflavone genistein （10 μmol L-1） has antioxidant properties on the frozen-thawed spermatozoa. This results in a decreased ROS production that shows a slight improvement in the sperm motility, and decreases the membrane lipid disorder and DNA damage caused by cryopreservation. These results suggest an effect of genistein on sperm functionality that could be of interest for assisted reproduction treatments using frozen- thawed human spermatozoa, but further studies will be necessary to confirm our findings and to evaluate the possible clinical applications.

The Neo-Zapatista Movement of Chiapas： Identities and Strategies

One of the collective phenomena that has allowed a theoretical debate on the social movements in the current context is the neo-Zapatista of Chiapas. From a discussion on some significant events and possible interpretations about their identities, strategies, demands and speeches, the aim is to place the movement in a structural dynamics that will acquire different views. In apparent confirmation of an ＂identitarian community of resistance＂, the neo-Zapatismo seems to move toward a new scenario, in which ＂your chance＂ is configured from its structural flexibility and fluidity. In this way, the neo-Zapatista movement seems to confirm that the theoretical antinomies on the social movements relating to the American school, its emphasis on ＂strategy＂ of collective actions, and the ones referring to the European version, emphasizing the dimension of ＂identity＂, cannot be considered completely contradictory. The neo-Zapatismo has shown that a particular strategy developed a specific corresponding identitarian construction, and vice versa.

Perspective and Subjectivity： The Power of Images in Northamerican Short-Story Writing

The study is meant to describe the evolution of American short-story writing with patterns where visual images have become central and not peripheral for the understanding of stories. Hemingway＇s use of objective correlatives was a trace mark, and the literary editors at The New Yorker urged their writers to slow down the emphasis on movement and plot in order to recreate a certain mood which would favour the perception of objects, anecdotes, and details. The impressionistic device works very much in the same way that an advertisement would do. It is meant to persuade the audience. The apparently non-commitant vision of reality shows in fact the author＇s point of view. The apparent simplicity is meant for a very wide audience and its deepest meaning suggests the scope of the particular visual aids working at the deepest level of consciousness

sPatterns of Disease on Paul Auster＇s Timbuktu

Following the theory of Trauma as a critical approach, it is analyzed how Paul Auster＇ s Timbuktu shows up the maladies of the contemporary world with a parody of disease full of excess and somehow mocking at its own elements. It is a distorted version of infirmity, the way it used to appear in former works of literature. The device is a winkle to the reader to envisage whatever novel or story from a carefully distanced view, very much in the way that Postmodernist authors do but with the realistic use of the form that he regularly employs.

Orpheus and Eurydice＇s Myth Revisitedin Jennifer Egan＇s A Visit From The Goon Squad

Rilke＇s Orpheus sonnet 27 runs, ＂Does it truly exist： time the destroyer？ / When topples the tower atop the peacefulheight？ / This heart belonging to the gods forever,/When will the demi-urge send it with dire might？＂ And it isprecisely on the destructing force of time that Jennifer Egan constructs her narrative upon. A Visit From the GoonSquad is exactly Orpheus and Eurydice＇s myth revisited, and she focuses on the tragedy of decline in 21 st centuryAmerica. A variety of characters unfulfilled lives conform the map of New York City, and Orpheus lyre hasbecome a rock and roll group, The Conduits, as a sort of misconnecting force in the lives of them all. A carefulliterary distance gives an impressionistic vision of inevitability and opportunity lost. My approach focuses on thedifferent interpretations of the classic myth, and on how Rilke＇s rhetorical questions offer an eclectic and metallicanswer in Jennifer Egan＇s contemporary view.

Abnormal Linguistic Lateralization and Sensory Processing in High Functioning Children with Autism Spectrum Conditions

Brain lateralization for language in high-functioning children with autism spectrum conditions (ASC) and sensory processing were explored as a part of a neuropsychological profile. A dichotic listening test and the Luria laterality subtest were administered to all participants (including controls) and the sensory profile test only to the ASC group. The usual right ear advantage was not exhibited by children with ASC and anomalies in auditory filtering were found. The sensory profile of 60% of the sample was characterized by hypersensitivity to auditory stimuli, hyposensitivity to vestibular information, high emotional reactions to sensory experiences, poor psychosocial coping strategies, high distractibility and inability to interpret body and facial language. Hyper-responsiveness to environmental auditory stimuli was significantly associated with impaired attention. Similarly, non-adaptive responses to sensory quotidian experiences were strongly connected to poor coping strategies. Our results, although preliminary, contribute to emphasizing the importance of including additional assessment methods such as the dichotic listening and the sensory profile questionnaire in the evaluation of cognitive profile in high-functioning children with ASC to plan an individualized psycho-educative intervention.

Characterization of the Constructions Materials Used in the Hydroelectric Power Plants in the Sedano＇s Valley, Burgos （Spain）

Small hydropower plants for electricity generation were first built in Spain in the early 1880s. The Spanish peninsula is characterized by its rugged landscape, fast flowing rivers and steep gradients. A clear example of this is the remarkable area of the upper Ebro river basin where powerful water flows are found that are ideal for electricity generation. Between 1900 and 1930, the river Ebro was a major source of energy for industrial areas such as Alava, Vizcaya, Vitoria, Miranda de Ebro, Burgos and La Rioja. Between 1951-1965, the use of these small hydropower plants declined due to the construction of alternatives by industrialists in the Basque Country, which in most cases led to their deterioration. They were rescued in the late twentieth century, thanks to private sector initiatives which funded their rehabilitation. This study examines two small-scale hydraulic power plants in the province of Burgos at Medina de Pomar and at Quintanilla Escalada; both buildings were used for generating electricity and had living quarters for the workers and now represent historic architectonic and industrial heritage. The study documents their architectonic features and the restoration processes that have permitted one of them to remain in operation up until the present day.

Spanish National Monuments with Traditional Timber Roofs： Restoration versus Reconstruction

We prioritize interventions in the roof structure in order to prevent subsequent deterioration of the monument. This presentation refers to interventions in two Spanish National Monuments： the Collegiate Church of Roa de Duero and San Esteban＇s church of Los Balbases. The Collegiate Church was built during the 16th century. It is considered the jewel of the villa. It is a ＂hallenkirche＂ model with three big naves of the same height covered by beautiful starry vaults. The intervention consisted of restoring the wooden roof structure, preserving the original 16th centary structure, by replacing the damaged elements. It was restored according to archaeological criteria. San Esteban＇s church is a 13 century Gothic style church with a Latin cross plan. It has three naves with a transept of great slenderness. It preserves Romanesque remains. Opposite to the previous intervention we decided to rebuild the roof because the former roof was totally distorted due to bad executed works during the past Century. In this way we regain the original shape of the church. These interventions aim to improve constructive and structural conditions as well as retrieve the image of both monuments. We have studied the visual impact of interventions through virtual recreations. The intervention criteria are very different, restoration versus structttral reconstruction.
