Alcoholism and cirrhosis,which are two of the most serious health problems worldwide,have a broad spectrum of clinical *** diseases are influenced by genetic susceptibility and cultural traits that differ globally but are specific for each *** contrast to other regions around the world,Mexicans present the highest drinking score and a high mortality rate for alcoholic liver disease with an intermediate category level of per capita alcohol *** has a unique history of alcohol consumption that is linked to profound anthropological and social *** Mexican population has an admixture genome inherited from different races,Caucasian,Amerindian and African,with a heterogeneous distribution within the ***,genes related to alcohol addiction,such as dopamine receptor D2 in the brain,or liver alcoholmetabolizing enzymes,such as alcohol dehydrogenase classⅠpolypeptide B,cytochrome P450 2E1 and aldehyde dehydrogenase class 2,may vary from one individual to ***,they may be inherited as risk or non-risk haplogroups that confer susceptibility or resistance either to alcohol addiction or abusive alcohol consumption and possibly liver ***,in this era of genomics,personalized medicine will benefit patients if it is directed according to individual or population-based *** association studies will be required to establish novel strategies for the prevention,care and treatment of liver disease in Mexico and worldwide.

A New Model to Evaluate the Economic Effects of Floods and Its Application to China

We set forth the macroeconomics evaluation of floods （MEF） model, a new model to assess and evaluate the impact of floods on GNP growth. This model points to a new, more concrete approach to measure the economic impact of floods. Up to now, the measurement has been subject to a great deal of uncertainty. The main contribution of the model is to significantly reduce this uncertainty by mea- suring the impact with four well-defined, economically intuitive indicators. To illuminate and demonstrate its promise, we employ the model to evaluate and analyze the impact of two major floods on the economy of the People＇s Republic of China. Our MEF-model analysis indicates that the floods of Zhangshu and Jiangxi in 2010 caused greater economic damage than the floods of Central South China in 1931. Going forward, MEF-model simulations are a valuable tool for estimating the effect of potential future floods in the PRC and elsewhere.

Patch isolation and shape predict plant functional diversity in a naturally fragmented forest

Aims It is known that taxonomic diversity can be predicted by the spatial configuration of the habitat,in particular by its area and degree of ***,taxonomic diversity is a poor predictor of ecosystem *** functional diversity is strongly linked to the func-tionality and stability of ecosystems,little is known about how changes in the spatial configuration of the habitat affect functional *** this study,we evaluated whether the spatial configuration of forest patches predicts the functional diversity of plants in a fragmented *** Five functional leaf traits(leaf dry matter content,leaf punch force,specific leaf area,leaf size and leaf thickness)were measured for 23 dominant plant species in 20 forest patches in a naturally fragmented forest on the yucatan ***-weighted multivariate and individual trait metrics of functional diversity were calculated and cor-related with size,degree of isolation and the shape of forest *** Findings Patch shape was negatively correlated with multivariate and individ-ual trait(leaf dry matter content and leaf size)metrics of functional *** isolation measures were also negatively correlated with individual trait(leaf dry matter content,leaf punch force and leaf size)metrics of functional *** other words,greater patch shape irregularity and isolation degree impoverish plant func-tional *** is the first report of the negative effects of patch shape irregularity and isolation on the functional diversity of plant communities in a forest that has been fragmented for a long time.

Zeolite-templated carbons as effective sorbents to remove methylsiloxanes and derivatives:A computational screening

Though widely used in our daily lives,volatile methylsiloxanes and derivatives are emerging contaminants and becoming a high-priority environment and public health *** effective sorbent materials can remove siloxanes in a cost-effective ***,by means of Grand Canonical Monte Carlo(GCMC)simulations,we evaluated the potentials of the recently proposed 68 stable zeolite-templated carbons(ZTCs)(PNAS 2018,115,E8116-E8124)for the removal of four linear methylsiloxanes and derivatives as well as two cyclic methylsiloxanes by the calculated average loading and average adsorption energy *** ZTCs,namely ISV,FAU1,FAU3,and H8326836,were identified with the top 50%adsorption performance toward all the six targeted contaminants,which outperform activated *** first principles computations revealed that steric hindrance,electrostatic interactions(further enhanced by charge transfer),and CH-p interactions account for the outstanding adsorption performance of these *** work provides a quick procedure to computationally screen promising ZTCs for siloxane removal,and help guide future experimental and theoretical investigations.

Influence of previous plane of nutrition on molecular mechanisms regulating the expression of urea and water metabolism related genes in the rumen and kidney of finishing crossbred Angus steers

This study aimed to understand how molecular mechanisms controlling water and urea metabolism at the finishing phase can be affected by previous plane of nutrition of crossbred Angus beef steers. Twentyfour(n = 24) animals were randomly distributed into either a moderate(MP) or high plane of nutrition during the background phase for 85 d. Animals were then blocked by their previous plane and were moved onto a 105-d finishing phase in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. The forage-finished group received only high-quality alfalfa hay, whereas the grain-fed group received a high grain diet(80% whole corn and20% alfalfa hay). By the end of the finishing phase, animals were harvested and tissue samples from the rumen and kidney were collected. Changes in gene expression of aquaporins(AQP)-2,-3,-4,-7, ATP1A1,ATP1B1, SGK1, CLIC1(kidney and rumen), UT-A1(kidney only) and UT-B(rumen only), were assayed via real-time q PCR; 18S r RNA was used as an endogenous control. One-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc analysis was conducted. When animals were from MP, forage-finishing increased the relative abundance of AQP3(P ≤ 0.05), AQP7(P ≤ 0.05), ATP1B1(P ≤ 0.05), and SGK1(P ≤ 0.05) in the kidney when compared to grain-fed animals. In the rumen, for the MP group, AQP7 was differentially expressed in both treatments at the finishing phase(P ≤ 0.01), with forage-finished steers having the highest expression of AQP7. For the MP group, UT-B had a tendency of presenting a higher expression on grainfed animals(P = 0.075). Overall, these results suggest that previous plane can impact expression of genes associated with water and urea metabolism during the finishing phase, namely AQP3, AQP7, ATP1B1, and SGK1 in the kidney, and AQP7 and UT-B in the rumen. The greatest impact observed on gene expression changes of investigated genes at the finishing phase was reflective of animals backgrounded on the moderate previous plane.

Biodiversity studies of myxomycetes in Madagascar

The results of the first comprehensive study of myxomycetes from the island of Madagascar,a world biodiversity hotspot,are reported in this *** island is of continental origin,the fourth largest in the world,and has been geographically isolated for more than 160 million years,since its separation from *** isolation,size and topography of Madagascar have triggered the development of a great variety of different habitats and favoured multiple evolutionary pathways,resulting in many animals and plants that exist nowhere else on *** for the biodiversity survey of the central and southern parts of the island took place in May 2009,to coincide with the end of the rainy *** moist forest,sclerophyll forest and dry forest were selected for sampling in Ranomafana,Andringitra,Andohahela and L’Isalo National *** unique vegetation was sampled in the spiny dry forest and succulent scrub with plants from the genera Alluaudia,Euphorbia,Kalanchoe and *** survey produced 124 species from 22 different genera in more than 750 myxomycete *** this paper one species,Perichaena madagascariensis,is described as new to science,21 species are new records for Africa,and 106 are reported for the first time from *** unusual collections included Physarum lakhanpalii that appeared on Ravenala madagascariensis,Fuligo intermedia and Licea nannengae found on Adansonia grandidieri,Perichaena pulcherrima,Physarum dictyosporum,and *** on Euphorbia and Licea rufocuprea on *** scope,methods and results of this survey are included in this paper,and comments are made on the ecology,distribution and substrate association of the myxomycetes of these areas of ***,micrographs and SEM images of interesting species are *** results indicate that the island of Madagascar has a unique assemblage of species of myxomycetes,different from neighbouring islands and from similar but distant envi

The biodiversity of myxomycetes in central Chile

The results obtained from two expeditions to survey the biodiversity of myxomycetes in Central Chile are reported in this *** surveys were carried out as part of Global Biodiversity of Eumycetozoans project funded by the National Science Foundation(USA)and the Myxotropic project funded by the Spanish *** expeditions were made to the temperate zone of the central part of the country between 23°and 39°South latitudes,which is characterized by Mediterranean vegetation,as well as to the transition areas between the arid and semi-arid regions of northern Chile,and the humid,cold Valdivian and Andean-Patagonian forests of the far *** of the fifteen regions of the country,from Antofagasta to Araucanía,in selected areas where the native vegetation is well preserved,were included in these *** 600 collections were obtained,and a total of 110 species of myxomycetes representing 29 genera have been *** of these(Dianema succulenticola,Didymium chilense)are species new to science and are described in this paper,12 species(Collaria nigricapillitia,Comatricha alta,Cribraria oregana,Dianema depressum,Didymium eximium,***,Enerthenema melanospermum,Lepidoderma chailletii,Macbrideola ovoidea,Physarum clavisporum,*** and Trichia alpina)were previously unknown for either the Neotropics or South America,and 49 additional species are new records for *** are provided on the morphology,distribution and ecology of selected species and light and SEM micrographs of the most significant species are *** evaluation of the biodiversity of myxomycetes in Chile,with special emphasis on the endemic plants that provided the substrates with which they were associated,and a comparative analysis of our results with those from other countries of South America is presented.

With the increase of high-power electrical components in modern ships,especially fully electric ships with electric propulsion drive(EPD),the cooling of EPD electrical components has become particularly *** optimal configurations for heat sinks with high thermal efficiency plays an essential role in this regard.A new technique for improving the efficiency of heat sinks is the utilization of perforated *** study examined the effects of perforation geometry(shape and size)on laminar airflow flow and heat transfer characteristics over a perforated plate-fin heat ***-dimensional simulations were conducted using the finite-volume scheme based on the SIMPLE *** this research,the effects of perforation shape and size on various parameters,e.g.,total drag force,average Nusselt number,perforated fin efficiency(PFE),heat transfer performance enhancement(HTPE),and fin optimization factor(η)were *** results confirmed that at a specific heat transfer surface area for perforated fins,the highest efficiency is achieved by circular *** contrast,the square perforations due to geometric similarity to rectangular fins could reach the maximum ***,fins with square perforations could achieve the most optimal ***,results showed that for a constant perforations size,change in perforations shape improves HTPE,PFE,andηby more than 40%,45%,and 110%,***,by modifying perforations size for a specified shape,an increment of more than 35%,40%,and 150%is observed in HTPE,PFE,andη,respectively.

Mexican beech[Fagus grandifolia ***(Martinez)***]is a subspecies endemic to the Sierra Madre Oriental Mountains and considered endangered due to the low density of its populations and high degree of habitat fragmentation and environmental *** its morphological and genetic variation is associated with its ability to adapt to changes in environmental conditions,the objective of this study was to determine whether phenotypic and genotypic variation exist,and it relationships with population reduction *** four beech populations in the states of Hidalgo and Veracruz,we analyzed 11 morphological variables for leaves and 6 micros atellite *** morphological variables that to discriminate between populations were related to the size of the leaf,but a robust differentiation pattern was not found,given that independent groups of leaves were *** populations located closest to each other,had greater genetic variation and less genetic distance;populations in the extreme north and south had the lowest genetic *** differentiation among populations was associated with reduction in population *** the 3 localities in Hidalgo,recent bottlenecks were identified,and in Veracruz,an old bottleneck was *** in leaf morphology and genetic structure of Mexican beech populations could be the result of a combination of various geographical,climate and ecological factors.

An Economic Model of the Wartime Economy： An Application to a Possible Sino-Japanese Conflict

This paper introduces a new economic model of a wartime economy, the war economic capability model--WEC-Model. The WEC-Model assesses the eco- nornic impact of an armed conflict in three different stages：（1） initial armed conflict and diplomatic negotiations; （2） military armed conflict; and （3） winners and losers in the post-armed conflict stage. The analysis makes use of new indicators such as economic desgrowth （-δ）, armed conflict intensity （αi）, armed conflict losses （-π）, economic wear （Л）, level of armed conflict tension （ζ）, level of diplomatic nego- tiations （η）, and total economic leaking （Ωt. To illustrate the model, we apply it to evaluate an imaginary armed conflict between the People＇s Republic of China and Japan.
