Spatial and Seasonal Variations of Heavy Metals in Wetland Soils of the Tidal Flats in the Yangtze Estuary, China: Environmental Implications

The environment of estuarine wetlands has been attracting worldwide attention. To study the spatial distribution of pollutants in the tidal flats of the Yangtze Estuary, Southeast China, the Eastern Tidal Flat of Chongming Island (EC) and the Jiuduansha Shoal (JS) of the estuary were selected as the study sites. At each of the two sites, a cross-transect from land to sea was established and topsoil and soil core samples in the cross-transect were collected spatially and seasonally to determine their contents of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni, Mn, and Fe) and grain-size characteristics. The results showed that the heavy metal loads were commonly higher in the soils of nearshore high tidal flats and had a tendency of decreasing from land to sea at both of the study sites. The contents of heavy metals in the soils of the high and medial tidal flats were mostly higher in April and November but lower in July. Corresponding spatial and seasonal variations in grain size of the intertidal soils were also observed at the two study sites. The soils in the nearshore high tidal flats were finer and gradually got coarser seawards; they were relatively finer in April and November but coarser in July. Furthermore, the contents of heavy metals in the intertidal soils of both the sites EC and JS were significantly positively correlated with the clay (63 μm) and 20-63 μm fractions, which suggested that the heavy metals in the intertidal soils were primarily combined with the fine particulate fraction (derstanding of the soil formation and classification in the tidal flats of the Yangtze Estuary.

腺苷5'-磷酰硫酸还原酶(adenosine 5'-phosphosulfate reductase, APR)是植物硫酸盐同化途径中的关键酶，对硫酸盐代谢和硫循环至关重要。该蛋白包含2个保守结构域：PAPS＿reductase和Thioredoxin，主要在质体中执行催化功能，对植物的生长发育和逆境应答有重要影响。为系统研究甘蓝型油菜(Brassica napus)中APR家族基因的结构与功能特征，本研究以拟南芥APR蛋白序列为模板，对甘蓝型油菜'中双11号'全基因组进行同源比对，共鉴定到10个APR家族基因，分布于9条染色体。进一步对该基因家族进行鉴定和分析，并初步探讨了甘蓝型油菜APR基因在非生物胁迫下的表达模式。结果显示，甘蓝型油菜APR蛋白的氨基酸序列长度为219～468 aa，相对分子质量范围为24.29～51.69 kD，等电点跨度为5.43～8.84；系统发育分析显示，甘蓝型油菜APR基因被分为3个亚族，各亚族成员具有相似的外显子-内含子结构；且APR蛋白均含有PAPS＿reductase和Thioredoxin保守结构域；共线性分析表明，片段复制是甘蓝型油菜APR基因家族扩张的主要机制；表达模式分析显示，APR基因在不同发育时期的组织器官中具有时空表达特异性，在油菜的子叶、营养莲座叶和角果皮中表达量较高；对甘蓝型油菜APR家族的启动子顺式作用元件和非生物胁迫条件下的表达模式进行分析，结果表明，甘蓝型油菜APR家族成员启动子区域富集了与激素响应和逆境适应相关的顺式作用元件，且该家族基因表达受重金属镉、铅和缺硫胁迫所诱导。上述结果表明，甘蓝型油菜APR基因在响应重金属镉、铅胁迫中发挥着重要的作用，这为进一步深入解析甘蓝型油菜APR家族基因的分子功能提供了参考。

Prevalence of gene mutations in a Chinese 46,XY disorders of sex development cohort detected by targeted next-generation sequencing

Tuta absoluta(Meyrick) originated in South America and is one of the most serious pests of tomatoes. It is also known to attack other solanaceous crops, including potato, eggplant, pepper, tobacco, and weedy species such as black nightshade. After accidental introduction into Spain in 2006, this pest spread rapidly throughout Afro-Eurasia and has become a major threat to tomato production worldwide. Here, we report the first record of T. absoluta as an invasive pest in China. It was found in tomato fields in Ili Kazakg Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region(Ili, Xinjiang), China, and its occurrence was confirmed by both morphological and molecular approaches. In Ili, T. absoluta has been found to attack eggplant, potato, and black nightshade. We found the larvae generally mining and feeding on leaves and boring into tomato fruits, with multiple larvae sometimes observed in a single fruit. Its infestation levels differ among the tomato fields and host species. In all of the surveyed tomato fields, T. absoluta infested 100% of plants. In some of the fields, up to 90% of the eggplant and 100% of the potato plants were infested. Since no natural enemies were found under field conditions, suitable management practices are urgently needed to stop the further spread of this destructive pest in China.

Al-doped ZnO/WO_(3) heterostructure films prepared by magnetron sputtering for isopropanol sensors

Metal oxide semiconductors(MOSs) are ideal sensing materials for detecting volatile organic compounds due to their low cost, diversity, high stability, and ease of production. However, it remains a grand challenge to develop the MOSs-based gas sensors for sensing isopropanol with desired performance via a simple, effective,and controllable method. Herein, we reported the preparation of the Al-doped Zn O(AZO)/WO_(3) heterostructure films by directly depositing the AZO coating onto the WO_(3) coating using a strategy of magnetron sputtering. The AZO/WO_(3) heterostructure films were constructed by numbers of irregular nanoparticles that were interconnected with each other. The AZO/WO_(3) heterostructure films-based gas sensors exhibited excellent isopropanolsensing performance with high response, promising selectivity, low detection limit, fast response rate, wide detection range, and ideal reproducibility. The promising isopropanol-sensing performance of the AZO/WO_(3) heterostructure films arises mainly from their high uniformity, unique microstructures with high surface roughness,and the construction of the heterostructure between the AZO and WO_(3) coatings. This work provides a versatile approach to prepare the MOSs-based heterostructure films for assembling the gas sensors.

Effects of metabolic syndrome on onset age and long-term outcomes in patients with acute coronary syndrome

BACKGROUND: We aim to investigate effects of metabolic syndrome on onset age and long-termoutcomes in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS).METHODS: Patients with ACS (n=6,431) who underwent percutaneous coronary interventionfrom January to december 2013 were enrolled. After excluding patients with previous coronary arterydisease, 1,558 patients were diagnosed with early-onset ACS (men aged ≤50 years;women aged≤60 years) and 3,044 patients with late-onset ACS. Baseline characteristics and five-year clinicaloutcomes were ***: Body mass index, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and uric acidconcentrations were significantly higher, while the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C)concentration was lower in the early-onset ACS group (Pdence interval [CI] 1.345–1.881), hypertriglyceridemia (OR 1.403,95% CI 1.185–1.660), and low HDL-C (OR 1.464, 95% CI 1.231–1.742) as independent risk factorsfor early-onset ACS (all Pdences of all cause death(1.5% vs. 3.8%, Pdeath (1.1% vs. 2.0%, P=0.023), and recurrent stroke (2.2% vs. 4.2%,Pdences of recurrent myocardial infarction (MI) and revascularization in patientswith early-onset ACS and metabolic ***: Obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, and lower HDL-C level are independent riskfactors for early-onset ACS, recurrent MI, and revascularization. The control of metabolic syndromemay reduce the incidence of early-onset ACS and improve the long-term prognosis.

Forecasting water disaster for a coal mine under the Xiaolangdi reservoir

Xin’an coal mine, Henan Province, faces the risk of water inrush because 40% of the area of the coal mine is under the surface water of the Xiaolangdi reservoir. To forecast water disaster, an effective aquifuge and a limit of water infiltration were determined by rock-phase analysis and long term observations of surface water and groundwater. By field monitoring, as well as physical and numerical simulation experiments, we obtained data reflecting different heights of a water flow fractured zone (WFFZ) under different mining conditions, derived a formula to calculate this height and built a forecasting model with the aid of GIS. On the basis of these activities, the coal mine area was classified into three sub-areas with different potential of water inrush. In the end, our research results have been applied in and verified by industrial mining experiments at three working faces and we were able to present a successful example of coal mining under a large reservoir.
