Stimulating Start-up Investment Through Government-Sponsored Venture Capital: Theory and Chinese Evidence

Government-sponsored venture capital(GVC) has been used to support financially constrained start-ups as an important policy tool in China. Typically, to motivate the social capital to invest in start-ups, GVC provides subsidies for them to bridge the funding gap in the early-stage venture capital market. However, the effect and mechanism of GVC affecting social capital investment have not been clearly studied. In this paper, the authors not only develop a game model to analyze this issue in theory, but conduct an empirical study by analyzing the 14741 records matched by propensity score matching(PSM) of Chinese venture capital market data from 2011 to 2021. The proposed findings are as the follows. Firstly, the subsidies offered by GVC will simultaneously increase the returns and risks of investments in start-ups of social capital with more volatile incentive effect of GVC. The incentive effect of GVC is only effective when the returns resulting from the subsidies outweigh the risks they introduce. In the context of the Chinese venture capital market, the incentive effect of GVC is effective. Secondly, the incentive effect of GVC is more pronounced in high-tech industries, which can be attributed to the signaling effect facilitated by GVC. In this context, the subsidy mainly helps social capital to bear the costs associated with screening potential investments. Thirdly, the incentive effect of GVC is more significant in underdeveloped venture capital markets, which can be explained by the “virtuous cycle” effect, in which GVC plays a pioneering role in establishing a more robust early-stage market trading system. By examining these three points, this study contributes to a better understanding of how GVC can effectively guide social capital investment, especially in the Chinese landscape.

Love wave propagation in one-dimensional piezoelectric quasicrystal multilayered nanoplates with surface effects

The exact solutions for the propagation of Love waves in one-dimensional(1D)hexagonal piezoelectric quasicrystal(PQC)nanoplates with surface effects are derived.An electro-elastic model is developed to investigate the anti-plane strain problem of Love wave propagation.By introducing three shape functions,the wave equations and electric balance equations are decoupled into three uncorrelated problems.Satisfying the boundary conditions of the top surface on the covering layer,the interlayer interface,and the matrix,a dispersive equation with the influence of multi-physical field coupling is provided.A surface PQC model is developed to investigate the surface effects on the propagation behaviors of Love waves in quasicrystal(QC)multilayered structures with nanoscale thicknesses.A novel dispersion relation for the PQC structure is derived in an explicit closed form according to the non-classical mechanical and electric boundary conditions.Numerical examples are given to reveal the effects of the boundary conditions,stacking sequence,characteristic scale,and phason fluctuation characteristics on the dispersion curves of Love waves propagating in PQC nanoplates with surface effects.

Bayesian partial pooling to reduce uncertainty in overcoring rock stress estimation

The state of in situ stress is a crucial parameter in subsurface engineering,especially for critical projects like nuclear waste repository.As one of the two ISRM suggested methods,the overcoring(OC)method is widely used to estimate the full stress tensors in rocks by independent regression analysis of the data from each OC test.However,such customary independent analysis of individual OC tests,known as no pooling,is liable to yield unreliable test-specific stress estimates due to various uncertainty sources involved in the OC method.To address this problem,a practical and no-cost solution is considered by incorporating into OC data analysis additional information implied within adjacent OC tests,which are usually available in OC measurement campaigns.Hence,this paper presents a Bayesian partial pooling(hierarchical)model for combined analysis of adjacent OC tests.We performed five case studies using OC test data made at a nuclear waste repository research site of Sweden.The results demonstrate that partial pooling of adjacent OC tests indeed allows borrowing of information across adjacent tests,and yields improved stress tensor estimates with reduced uncertainties simultaneously for all individual tests than they are independently analysed as no pooling,particularly for those unreliable no pooling stress estimates.A further model comparison shows that the partial pooling model also gives better predictive performance,and thus confirms that the information borrowed across adjacent OC tests is relevant and effective.

Honokiol Prevents Intestinal Barrier Dysfunction in Mice with Severe Acute Pancreatitis and Inhibits JAK/STAT1 Pathway and Acetylation of HMGB1

Objective To investigate the effect of honokiol(HON)and the role of high-mobility group protein B1(HMGB1)on the pathogenesis of severe acute pancreatitis(SAP).Methods Thirty mice were numbered according to weight,and randomly divided into 5 groups using a random number table,including control,SAP,SAP and normal saline(SAP+NS),SAP and ethyl pyruvate(SAP+EP),or SAP+HON groups,6 mice in each group.Samples of pancreas,intestine,and blood were collected 12 h after SAP model induction for examination of pathologic changes,immune function alterations by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA),and Western blot.In vitro experiments,macrophages were divided into 5 groups,the control,lipopolysaccharide(LPS),LPS+DMSO(DMSO),LPS+anti-HMGB1 monoclonal antibody(mAb),and LPS+HON groups.The tight connection level was determined by transmission electron microscopy and fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled.The location and acetylation of HMGB1 were measured by Western blot.Finally,pyridone 6 and silencing signal transducer and activator of the transcription 1(siSTAT1)combined with honokiol were added to determine whether the Janus kinase(JAK)/STAT1 participated in the regulation of honokiol on HMGB1.The protein expression levels of HMGB1,JAK,and STAT1 were detected using Western blot.Results Mice with SAP had inflammatory injury in the pancreas,bleeding of intestinal tissues,and cells with disrupted histology.Mice in the SAP+HON group had significantly fewer pathological changes.Mice with SAP also had significant increases in the serum levels of amylase,lipase,HMGB1,tumor necrosis factor-α,interleukin-6,diamine oxidase,endotoxin-1,and procalcitonin.Mice in the SAP+HON group did not show these abnormalities(P<0.01).Studies of Caco-2 cells indicated that LPS increased the levels of occludin and claudin-1 as well as tight junction permeability,decreased the levels of junctional adhesion molecule C,and elevated intercellular permeability(P<0.01).HON treatment blocked these effects.Studies of macrophages indicated that LPS led to low nucle

Cogeneration of Innovative Audio-visual Content: A New Challenge for Computing Art

In recent years,computing art has developed rapidly with the in-depth cross study of artificial intelligence generated con-tent(AIGC)and the main features of artworks.Audio-visual content generation has gradually been applied to various practical tasks,including video or game score,assisting artists in creation,art education and other aspects,which demonstrates a broad application pro-spect.In this paper,we introduce innovative achievements in audio-visual content generation from the perspective of visual art genera-tion and auditory art generation based on artificial intelligence(Al).We outline the development tendency of image and music datasets,visual and auditory content modelling,and related automatic generation systems.The objective and subjective evaluation of generated samples plays an important role in the measurement of algorithm performance.We provide a cogeneration mechanism of audio-visual content in multimodal tasks from image to music and display the construction of specific stylized datasets.There are still many new op-portunities and challenges in the field of audio-visual synesthesia generation,and we provide a comprehensive discussion on them.

High-sensitivity photonic crystal fiber sensor based on surface plasmon resonance

In this paper, we propose a photonic crystal fiber(PCF) sensor based on the surface plasmonic resonance(SPR) effect for simultaneous temperature and refractive index(RI) measurement. The coupling characteristics and sensing performance of the sensor are analyzed using the full vector finite element method(FEM). The sensor provides two channels for independent measurement of RI and temperature. When operating independently, channel I supports y-polarized light with a sensitivity of up to 7 000 nm/RIU for detecting RI, while channel II supports x-polarized light with a sensitivity of up to 16 nm/°C for detecting temperature. Additionally, we investigate the influence of gold layer thickness on the sensing performance to optimize the sensor.

Generating diverse clothed 3D human animations via a generative model

Data-driven garment animation is a current topic of interest in the computer graphics industry.Existing approaches generally establish the mapping between a single human pose or a temporal pose sequence,and garment deformation,but it is difficult to quickly generate diverse clothed human animations.We address this problem with a method to automatically synthesize dressed human animations with temporal consistency from a specified human motion label.At the heart of our method is a twostage strategy.Specifically,we first learn a latent space encoding the sequence-level distribution of human motions utilizing a transformer-based conditional variational autoencoder(Transformer-CVAE).Then a garment simulator synthesizes dynamic garment shapes using a transformer encoder-decoder architecture.Since the learned latent space comes from varied human motions,our method can generate a variety of styles of motions given a specific motion label.By means of a novel beginning of sequence(BOS)learning strategy and a self-supervised refinement procedure,our garment simulator is capable of efficiently synthesizing garment deformation sequences corresponding to the generated human motions while maintaining temporal and spatial consistency.We verify our ideas experimentally.This is the first generative model that directly dresses human animation.

Let H be a complex infinite dimensional Hilbert space and B(H)be the algebra of all bounded linear operators on H.In this paper,we mainly study the operators that satisfy both a-Weyl's theorem and property(R).Also,the operators whose functional calculus satisfies the two properties are also explored.We give the features for the operator or its functional calculus for which both a-Weyl's theorem and property(R)hold.

From germline genome to highly fragmented somatic genome:genome-wide DNA rearrangement during the sexual process in ciliated protists

Genomes are incredibly dynamic within diverse eukaryotes and programmed genome rearrangements(PGR)play important roles in generating genomic diversity.However,genomes and chromosomes in metazoans are usually large in size which prevents our understanding of the origin and evolution of PGR.To expand our knowledge of genomic diversity and the evolutionary origin of complex genome rearrangements,we focus on ciliated protists(ciliates).Ciliates are single-celled eukaryotes with highly fragmented somatic chromosomes and massively scrambled germline genomes.PGR in ciliates occurs extensively by removing massive amounts of repetitive and selfish DNA elements found in the silent germline genome dur-ing development of the somatic genome.We report the partial germline genomes of two spirotrich ciliate species,namely Strombidium cf.sulcatum and Halteria grandinella,along with the most compact and highly fragmented somatic genome for S.cf.sulcatum.We provide the first insights into the genome rearrangements of these two species and compare these features with those of other ciliates.Our analyses reveal:(1)DNA sequence loss through evolution and during PGR in S.cf.sulcatum has combined to produce the most compact and efficient nanochromosomes observed to date;(2)the compact,transcriptome-like somatic genome in both species results from extensive removal of a relatively large number of shorter germline-specific DNA sequences;(3)long chromosome breakage site motifs are duplicated and retained in the somatic genome,revealing a complex model of chromosome fragmentation in spirotrichs;(4)gene scrambling and alternative pro-cessing are found throughout the core spirotrichs,offering unique opportunities to increase genetic diversity and regulation in this group.
