Temporal trends in the prevalence of major birth defects in China:a nationwide population-based study from 2007 to 2021

Background Birth defects constitute a significant public health issue worldwide,yet there is a lack of comprehensive population-based data for the Chinese population.Methods We analyzed data from the China National Population-based Birth Defects Surveillance System from 2007 to 2021,we calculated the prevalence rates of selected birth defects,stratified by maternal residence,geographic region,maternal age,and infant *** Joinpoint regression model was utilized to assess trends and annual percent changes in prevalence.Results From 2007 to 2021,significant downward trends in prevalence were observed for neural tube defects(NTDs),hydro-cephalus,cleft lip with or without palate(Cl/P),limb reduction defects(lRD),omphalocele,Down syndrome,and tetralogy of Fallot(TOF).Conversely,upward trends were identified for hypospadias,cleft palate(CP),microtia/anotia,polydactyly,syndactyly,ventricular septal defect(VSD),atrial septal defect/patent foramen ovale(ASD/PFO),and patent ductus arte-riosus(PDA).Younger mothers exhibited a higher prevalence of hydrocephalus,gastroschisis,Cl/P,and polydactyly,while anotia/microtia,Down syndrome,and congenital heart diseases(CHDs)were more common in mothers aged 35 years or *** variations in the prevalence of anencephalus,spina bifida,Cl/P,anorectal atresia/stenosis,hypospadias,polydactyly,syndactyly,VSD,ASD/PFO,and PDA were found across different maternal residences and geographic regions.Conclusion This study highlights the diverse trends and prevalence patterns of major birth defects,underscoring the neces-sity for defect-specific public health interventions.

A continuum traffic flow model with the consideration of coupling effect for two-lane freeways

A new higher-order continuum model is proposed by considering the coupling and lane changing effects of the vehicles on two adjacent lanes. A stability analysis of the proposed model provides the conditions that ensure its linear stability. Issues related to lane changing, shock waves and rarefaction waves, local clustering and phase transition are also investigated with numerical experiments. The simulation results show that the proposed model is capable of providing explanations to some particular traffic phenomena commonly observable in real traffic flows.

NEURAl NETWORK MODElINg FOR ESTIMATION OF SCOUR DEPTH AROUND BRIDgE PIERS

It is essential to predict the scour depth around bridge piers for hydraulic engineers involved in the economical design of bridge pier foundation. Conventional investigations have long been of the opinion that empirical scour prediction equations based on laboratory data over predict scour depths. In this article, the Back-Propagation Neural Network （BPN） was applied to predict the scour depth in order to overcome the problem of exclusive and the nonlinear relationships. The observations obtained from thirteen states in USA was verified by the present model. From the comparison with conventional experimental methods, it can be found that the scour depth around bridge piers can be efficiently predicted using the BPN.

Two new epimeric pairs of iridoid scyphiphin A1 （la）, A2 （lb） and scyphiphin B 1 （2a）, B2 （2b） were isolated from Scyphiphora hydrophyllacea gaertn. F. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods. The mixture of scyphiphin B 1 and scyphiphin B2 showed moderate cytotoxicity against human hepatoma SMMC-7721 cell line in vitro by MTT method.

Comparison of surgical effect and postoperative patient experience between laparoendoscopic single-site and conventional laparoscopic varicocelectomy, a *** and meta-analysis

The present meta-analysis was conducted to compare the clinical effect and patient experience of laparoendoscopic single-site varicocelectomy （lESSV） and conventional laparoscopic varicocelectomy. The candidate studies were included after literature search of database Cochrane library, PubMed, EMBASE, and MEDlINE. Related information on essential data and outcome measures was extracted from the eligible studies by two independent authors, and a meta-analysis was conducted using STATA 12.0 software. Subgroup analyses were conducted by study design （RCT and non-RCT）. The odds ratio （OR） or standardized mean difference （SMD） and their 95% confidence intervals （95% CIs） were used to estimate the outcome measures. Seven articles were included in our meta-analysis. The results indicated that patient who had undergone lESSV had a shorter duration of back to work （overall： SMD = -1.454, 95% Ch -2.502m0.405, P= 0.007; non-RCT： SMD = -2.906, 95% Ch -3.796-2.017, P= 0.000; and RCT： SMD = -0.841, 95% Ch -1.393-0.289, P = 0.003） and less pain experience at 3 h or 6 h （SMD = -0.447, 95% Ch -0.754-0.139, P = 0.004）, day 1 （SMD = -0.477, 95% Ch -0.905-0.05, P = 0.029）, and day 2 （SMD = -0.612, 95% Ch -1.099-0.125, P= 0.014） postoperatively based on RCT studies. However, the meta-analyses based on operation time, clinical effect （improvement of semen quality and scrotal pain relief）, and complications （hydrocele and recurrence） yielded nonsignificant results. In conclusion, lESSV had a rapid recovery and less pain experience over conventional laparoscopic varicocelectomy. However, there was no statistically significant difference between the two varicocelectomy techniques in terms of the clinical effect and the incidence of hydrocele and varicocele recurrence. More high-quality studies are warranted for a comprehensive conclusion.

Solving the mystery of vanishing rivers in China

A major controversy was sparked worldwide by a recent national water census claiming that the number of Chinese rivers with watersheds ≥100 km2was less than half the previous estimate of 50 000 rivers, which also stimulates debates on the potential causes and consequences. Here, we estimated the number of rivers in terms of stream-segmentation characteristics described by Horton, Strahler and Shreve stream-order rules, as well as their mixed mode for named rivers recorded in the Encyclopedia of Rivers and lakes in *** a result, the number of ‘vanishing rivers’ has been found to be highly relevant to statistical specifications in addition to the erroneous inclusion of pseudo-rivers primarily generated in arid or frost-thaw areas. The modified Horton stream-order scheme reasonably depicts the configuration of complete natural streams from headwater to destination, while the Strahler largely projects the fragmentation of the named river networks associated with human aggregation to the hierarchical river systems.

Chimera states in bipartite networks of FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillators

Chimera states consisting of spatially coherent and incoherent domains have been observed in differ- ent topologies such as rings, spheres, and complex networks. In this paper, we investigate bipartite networks of nonlocally coupled FitzHugh-Nagumo （FHN） oscillators in which the units are allocated evenly to two layers, and FHN units interact with each other only when they are in different lay- ers. We report the existence of chimera states in bipartite networks. Owing to the interplay between chimera states in the two layers, many types of chimera states such as in-phase chimera states, an- tiphase chimera states, and out-of-phase chimera states are classified. Stability diagrams of several typical chimera states in the coupling strength-coupling radius plane, which show strong multistability of chimera states, are explored.

Superconducting MgB_(2) thin films were fabricated on Al_(2)O_(3)(0001)substrates under an ex situ processing *** thin films were deposited by pulsed laser deposition followed by a post-annealing *** measurements of the deposited MgB_(2) films show Tc of~39 K,while scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction analysis indicate that the films consist of well-crystallized grains with a highly c-axis-oriented structure.

Flotation behavior and electronic simulations of rare earth minerals in the presence of dolomite supernatant using sodium oleate collector

Common rare earth(RE) minerals, such as bastnasite and monazite, may be formed in deposits associated with carbonate gangue, such as calcite and dolomite. Sodium oleate is a widely used collector for the flotation of both RE and gangue minerals, which might, therefore, be an inefficient process due to the lack of selectivity of this collector. Since these minerals are also sparingly soluble in solution, they could release their constituent ions into the solution, which could affect the floatability of other minerals. In this study, the interactions of sodium oleate with bastnasite and monazite in the presence of dissolved dolomite species have been investigated. Microflotation tests were carried out to explore the effects of these dissolved species on the floatability of the RE minerals. Zeta potential measurements and XPS characterization were carried out to understand how the species affect the collector adsorption. To complement these characterizations, density functional theory(DFT) simulations were conducted to investigate the collector-mineral and collector-adsorbed species(on the mineral surface) *** results show that collector-dolomite interaction energy is greater than that of collector-adsorbed species, but lower than collector-monazite interaction energy, explaining the decrease in the minerals' recovery upon exposure to the dissolved mineral species. It is also shown that oleate ions(OI^-) have the strongest interaction with the minerals compared to other oleate species such as acid soap(HOI_2^-) and oleate dimer(OI_2^(2-)). The behavior(strength and selectivity) of sodium oleate towards RE minerals and dolomite, as compared to other RE mineral collectors(such as aromatic hydroxamate), is attributed mainly to the collector's and the minerals' structure.
