Multiscale structural analysis inspired by exceptional load cases concerning the immersed tunnel of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge

This paper contains an assessment of the added value of multiscale material models for concrete in the context of macroscopic struc-tural analysis of(steel-reinforced)concrete *** examples are *** are inspired by the possibility of car accidents inside the immersed tunnel of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge(HZMB).The first example deals with vehicles crashing into the tunnel *** high-dynamic strengthening effect of concrete is studied based on an engineering mechanics *** structural nature of the dynamic strength increase factor(DIF)is demonstrated by means of high-dynamic strength values measured on mortar cylinders of different ***,the evolution of the DIF as a function of hardening of concrete at material ages beyond 28 days is studied.A validated multiscale model for concrete renders a customized analysis for the specific concrete used for the aforementioned tunnel *** is found that the DIF decreases with progressive hardening of concrete at material ages beyond 28 *** second example is inspired by tunnel fires as may happen after car *** study refers to thermal stresses in steel-reinforced concrete beams sub-jected to sudden *** thermal expansion coefficient of the concrete of the tunnel is quantified by means of a multiscale *** is used as input for linear thermo-mechanical Finite-Element simulations of steel-reinforced concrete *** essential macroscopic simulation results are temperature distributions and associated stress *** are employed for top-down quantification of micro-scopic stress states inside the cement paste and the *** allows for quantifying two sources of microstructural stress fluctu-ations:(i)the macro-to-micro stress concentration and(ii)the mismatch of microscopic thermal expansion *** both examples,the multiscale models for concrete have increased the informative content of the structural simulations.

The development of freestanding and binder-free electrode is an effective approach to perform the inherent capacity of active materials and promote the mechanism study by minimizing the interference from ***,we construct a freestanding cathode composed of MoS_(3)/PPy nanowires(NWs)deposited on porous nickel foam(NF)(MoS_(3)/PPy/NF)through electrochemical methods,which can work efficiently as sulfur-equivalent cathode material for Li-S *** structural stability of the MoS_(3)/PPy/NF cathode is greatly enhanced due to its significant tolerance to the volume expansion of MoS_(3)during the lithiation process,which we ascribe to the flexible 3D framework of PPy NWs,leading to superior cycling performance compared to the bulk-MoS_(3)/NF *** the interference of binder and carbon additives,the evolution of the chemical and electronic structure of Mo and S species during the discharge/charge was studied by X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy(XANES).The formation of lithium polysulfides was excluded as the driving cathode reaction mechanism,suggesting the great potential of MoS_(3)as a promising sulfur-equivalent cathode material to evade the shuttle effect for Li-S *** present study successfully demonstrates the importance of structural design of freestanding electrode enhancing the cycling performances and revealing the corresponding mechanisms.

This review of the added value of multi-scale modeling of concrete is based on three representative *** first one is concerned with the analysis of experimental data,taken from four high-dynamic *** structural nature of the high-dynamic strength increase can be explained by using a multi-scale *** accounts for the microstructure of the *** second example refers to multi-scale thermoelastic analysis of concrete pavements,subjected to solar heating.A sensitivity analysis with respect to the internal relative humidity(RH)of concrete has underlined the great importance of the RH for an assessment of the risk of microcracking of *** third example deals with multi-scale structural analysis of a real-scale test of a segmental tunnel *** has turned out that multi-scale modeling of concrete enables more reliable predictions of crack opening displacements in tunnel segments than macroscopic models taken from codes of ***,it is concluded that multi-scale models have indeed a significant added ***,its degree varies with these *** any case,it can be assessed by means of a comparison of the results from three sources,namely,multi-scale structural analysis,conventional structural analysis,and experiments.

Impact of gender on outcomes after transcatheter aortic valve implantation

Backgound The influence of gender on clinical outcomes following transcatheter aortic valve implantation （TAVI） was considerably discrepant in previous studies. We aimed to investigate the impact of gender in our registry. Methods The study is a retrospective observational analysis of a prospectively designed cohort （546 consecutive patients treated at the University Hospital Zurich who were enrolled in Swiss TAVI Cohort from May 2008 to April 2014）. The Study took place in University Heart Centre at University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland. Results Both genders were equally represented with 51.5 % （n = 281） of the populations being females, who were significantly older and had a more pronounced history of hypertension （P 〈 0.001 ）. Males on the other hand showed a higher incidence of diabetes （P = 0.004）, coronary artery disease （P 〈 0.001）, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease （P 〈 0.001） and renal failure requiring renal replacement therapy （P = 0.018）. Patients were followed up for a median of 391 days with a 100% complete follow-up at one year. The primary outcome （all-cause mortality） occurred in 6.8% （n = 37） and 15% （n = 82） of patients at 30 days and one year, respectively. The 30-day all-cause mortality outcome did not significantly differ between females （7.5%） and males （6.0%）（P = 0.619）, but one year all-cause mortality occurred significantly more in males than in females （18.7% vs. 11.7%, P 〈 0.037）. Conclusion After TAVI implantation for severe aortic stenosis, males have a less favorable long-term （one year） mortality outcome than females.

Roles of SlETR7,a newly discovered ethylene receptor,in tomato plant and fruit development

AIM:To evaluate the safety and efficacy of vitamin E in children with chronic hepatitis ***:We randomly assigned patients with chronic hepatitis B,positive for hepatitis B e antigen(HBeAg),to receive either vitamin E or placebo once daily for 6 mo in a 3:1 ratio and double-blind *** primary end point was HBeAg seroconversion,defined as the loss of HBeAg,undetectable levels of serum hepatitis B virus DNA,and the appearance of antibodies against HBeAg 12 mo after ***:At baseline visit,49 patients had normal and 43 had increased serum aminotransferase ***-nine patients did not respond to previous treatment with interferon-α or ***-six children completed the study;16 were non-compliant(n = 7),lost to follow-up(n = 7),or started another antiviral treatment(n = 3).Intention-to-treat analysis showed HBeAg seroconversion in 16 children(23.2%) treated with vitamin E and two(8.7%) in the placebo group(P = 0.13).Vitamin E was well ***:There is only a tendency that vitamin E may promote HBeAg *** larger studies are needed to clarify the role of antioxidants in the therapy of chronic hepatitis B.

Microstructuring of titanium surfaces with plasma-modified titanium particles by cold spraying

Although the deposition mechanisms of the cold spray process are well studied, few reports regarding the use of surface-modified particles exist. Herein, titanium particles 3-39 μm in size and with an angular shape were modified in a plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition process in Ar, Ar-C2H2, and N2 plasmas. After Ar-C2H2 and N2 treatments, the respective presence of TiC and TiN on the particle surface was confirmed via transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray, X-ray photoelectron, and Raman spectroscopies. The powders were deposited on titanium substrates by cold spray experiments, where unmodified particles up to 10(xm in size exhibited a successful surface bon ding. This finding was described by an existing analytical model, whose parameters were achieved by computational fluid dynamics simulations taking the particle shape factor into account:. A good deposition of plasma-modified particles up to 30 μm in size was experimentally observed, exhibiting an upper size limit larger than that predicted by the model. Higher surface roughness values were found for plasmamodified particles, as determined by 3D scanning electron microscopy. The water contact angle indicated that argon treatment influenced the wettability. Tribological tests showed a decrease of the initial friction coefficient from 0.53 to 0.47 by microstructuring.

E-selectin ligand complexes adopt an extended high-affinity conformation

E-selectin is a cell-adhesion molecule of the vascular endothelium that promotes essential leukocyte rolling in the early inflammatory response by binding to glycoproteins containing the tetrasaccharide sialyl Lewisx(sLex).Efficient leukocyte recruitment under vascular flow conditions depends on an increased lifetime of E-selectin/ligand complexes under tensile force in a so-called catch-bond binding ***-crystal structures of a representative fragment of the extracellular E-selectin region with sLex and a glycomimetic antagonist thereof reveal an extended E-selectin conformation,which is identified as a high-affinity binding state of E-selectin by molecular dynamics ***-angle X-ray scattering experiments demonstrate a direct link between ligand binding and E-selectin conformational transition under static conditions in *** permits tracing a series of concerted structural changes connecting ligand binding to conformational stretching as the structural basis of E-selectin catch-bond-mediated leukocyte *** detailed molecular view of the binding site paves the way for the design of a new generation of selectin *** is of special interest,since their therapeutic potentialwas recently demonstrated with the pan-selectin antagonists gMI-1070(Rivipansel).
