Developing kNN forest data imputation for Catalonia

The combined use of LiDAR(Light Detection And Ranging)scanning and field inventories can provide spatially continuous wall-to-wall information on forest *** information can be used in many ways in forest mapping,scenario analyses,and forest manage-ment *** study aimed to find the optimal way to obtain continuous forest data for Catalonia when using kNN imputation(kNN stands for“k nearest neighbors”).In this method,data are imputed to a certain location from k field-measured sample plots,which are the most similar to the location in terms of LiDAR metrics and topographic *** multidimensional Euclidean distance was used as the similarity *** study tested two different methods to optimize the distance *** first method optimized,in the first step,the set of LiDAR and topographic variables used in the measure,as well as the transformations of these *** weights of the selected variables were optimized in the second *** other method optimized the variable set as well as their transformations and weights in one single *** two-step method that first finds the variables and their transfor-mations and subsequently optimizes their weights resulted in the best imputation *** the study area,the use of three to five nearest neighbors was *** and latitude turned out to be the most important variables when assessing the similarity of two locations of Catalan forests in the context of kNN data *** optimal distance measure always included both LiDAR metrics and topographic *** study showed that the optimal similarity measure may be different for different ***,it was suggested that kNN data imputation should always be started with the optimization of the measure that is used to select the k nearest neighbors.

An up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket(UASB)reactor targeting sulfate reduction was operated under a constant TOC/S-SO2-4ratio of 1.5±0.3 g C/g S for 639 days using crude glycerol as carbon source.A filamentous and fluffy flocculant material,namely slime-like substances(SLS),was gradually accumulated in the bioreactor after the cease of methanogenic *** accumulation of SLS was followed by a decrease in the removal efficiencies and a deterioration in the *** characteristics of SLS were investigated to explore the causes of its formation and the effect of SLS on the UASB *** showed that glycerol fermentation and sulfate reduction processes taking place in the reactor were mainly accomplished in the bottom part of the UASB reactor,as the sludge concentration in the bottom was *** accumulation of SLS in the UASB reactor caused sludge flotation that further led to biomass washout,which decreased the sulfate and glycerol removal *** activity tests performed with granular sludge(gS),slime-covered granular sludge(SCgS)and SLS showed that there was no difference between gS and SLS in the mechanism of glycerol fermentation and sulfate ***,the specific sulfate reduction rate of gS was higher than that of SLS,while SLS showed a higher glycerol fermentation rate than that of *** different rates in gS and SLS were attributed to the higher relative abundances of fermentative microorganisms found in SLS and higher relative abundances of sulfate reducing bacteria(SRB)found in gS.

Connexin 43 (CX43) is one of the major components of gap junctions, the structures responsible for the intercellular communication and transmission of the electrical impulse in the left ventricle. There is limited information on the histological changes of CX43 with age and their effect on electrophysiology, especially in humans. Here, we analyzed left ventricular biopsies from living donors starting at midlife to characterize age-related CX43 remodeling. We assessed its quantity, degree of lateralization, and spatial heterogeneity together with fibrotic deposition. We observed no significant age-related remodeling of CX43. Only spatial heterogeneity increased slightly with age, and this increase was better explained by biological age than by chronological age. Importantly, we found that CX43 features varied considerably among individuals in our population with no relevant relationship to age or fibrosis content, in contrast to animal species. We used our experimental results to feed computational models of human ventricular electrophysiology and to assess the effects of interindividual differences in specific features of CX43 and fibrosis on conduction velocity, action potential duration, and arrhythmogenicity. We found that larger amounts of fibrosis were associated with the highest arrhythmic risk, with this risk being increased when fibrosis deposition was combined with a reduction in CX43 amount and/or with an increase in CX43 spatial heterogeneity. These mechanisms underlying high arrhythmic risk in some individuals were not associated with age in our study population. In conclusion, our data rule out CX43 remodeling as an age-related arrhythmic substrate in the population beyond midlife, but highlight its potential as a proarrhythmic factor at the individual level, especially when combined with increased fibrosis.

Much effort has been made to uncover the cellular heterogeneities of human hearts by single-nucleus RNA ***,the cardiac transcriptional regulation networks have not been systematically described because of the limitations in detecting transcription *** this study,we optimized a pipeline for isolating nuclei and conducting single-nucleus RNA sequencing targeted to detect a higher number of cell signal genes and an optimal number of transcription *** this unbiased protocol,we characterized the cellular composition of healthy human hearts and investigated the transcriptional regulation networks involved in determining the cellular identities and functions of the main cardiac cell *** in fibroblasts,a novel regulator,PKNOX2,was identified as being associated with physiological fibroblast activation in healthy *** validate the roles of these transcription factors in maintaining homeostasis,we used single-nucleus RNA-sequencing analysis of transplanted failing hearts focusing on fibroblast *** trajectory analysis suggested that PKNOX2 was abnormally decreased from fibroblast activation to pathological myofibroblast *** gain-and loss-of-function in vitro experiments demonstrated the inhibitory role of PKNOX2 in pathological fibrosis ***,fibroblast-specific overexpression and knockout of PKNOX2 in a heart failure mouse model induced by transverse aortic constriction surgery significantly improved and aggravated myocardial fibrosis,*** summary,this study established a high-quality pipeline for single-nucleus RNA-sequencing analysis of heart *** this optimized protocol,we described the transcriptional regulation networks of the main cardiac cell subtypes and identified PKNOX2 as a novel regulator in suppressing fibrosis and a potential therapeutic target for future translational studies.

Vigilance behavior of Pyrenean chamois Rupicapra pyrenaica pyrenaica:Effect of sex and position in the herd

The Pyrenean chamois Rupicapra pyrenaica pyrenaica is a mountain-dwelling ungulate with an extensive presence in open areas. Optimal group size results from the trade off between advantages （a reduction in the risk of predation） and disadvantages （competition between members of the herd） of group living. In addition, advantages and disadvantages of group living may vary depending on the position of each individual within the herd. Our objective was to study the effect of central vs. peripheral position in the herd on feeding and vigilance behavior in male and female Pyrenean chamois and to ascertain if a group size effect existed. We used focal animal sampling and recorded social interactions when a focal animal was involved. With males, vigilance rate was higher in the central part of the group than at the periphery, probably due to a higher density of animals in the central part of the herd and a higher probability of being disturbed by conspecifics. With females, vigilance rate did not differ according to position in the herd. Females spent more time feeding than males, and males showed a higher frequency of the vigilance behavior than females. We did not observe a clear relationship between group size and vigilance behavior. The differences in vigilance behavior might be due to social interactions

Living mycelium composites discern weights via patterns of electrical activity

Venous and arterial thromboembolism in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases

The risk of thromboembolism(TE)is increased in patients with inflammatory bowel disease(IBD),mainly due to an increased risk of venous TE(VTE).The risk of arterial TE(ATE)is less pronounced,but an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases needs to be addressed in IBD *** predisposes to arterial and venous thrombosis through similar prothrombotic mechanisms,including triggering activation of coagulation,in part mediated by impairment of the intestinal barrier and released bacterial *** in IBD has clinical specificities,i.e.,an earlier first episode in life,high rates during both active and remission stages,higher recurrence rates,and poor *** increased likelihood of VTE in IBD patients may be related to surgery,the use of medications such as corticosteroids or tofacitinib,whereas infliximab is ***-term complications of VTE can include post-thrombotic syndrome and high recurrence rate during post-hospital discharge.A global clot lysis assay may be useful in identifying patients with IBD who are at risk for *** VTEs occur in IBD outpatients;therefore,outpatient prophylaxis in high-risk patients is *** is crucial to continue focusing on prevention and adequate treatment of VTE in patients with IBD.

The design analyze of new hybrid drive concept

This paper presents the design method of hybrid drive system for the minibus with some limited conditions. The approach of design hybrid drive system is based on the dynamic modeling and simulation of the hybrid minibus with planetary gear system. The main target of the design is to obtain the optimal design with the proper hybrid drive configuration and control for a given set of design constraints. In oder to meet the design target, it＇s necessary to adjust some parameters such as mechanical ratios and parameters of battery pack as well as control by simulation. During simulation the transient operating process can be studied in details with the dynamic model in Matlab/Simulink. The control strategy can be optimized by running the simulation and monitoring the operation of each components： the operating area of internal combustion engine （ICE）, fuel consumption （energy consumption）, the power distribution, the torque and rotary speed of ICE and motor, the operating efficiency of motor, the aheration of battery state of charge （SOC）, current and voltage.
