Two Poplar glycosyltransferase genes, PdgATL 1.1 and PdgATL1.2, Are Functional Orthologs to PARVUS/AtgATL 1 in Arabidopsis

Several genes in Arabidopsis, including PARVUS/AtgATL1, have been implicated in xylan synthesis. However, the biosynthesis of xylan in woody plants, where this polysaccharide is a major component of wood, is poorly understood. Here, we characterize two Populus genes, PdgATL 1.1 and PdgATL 1.2, the closest orthologs to the Arabidopsis PARVUS/gATL1 gene, with respect to their gene expression in poplar, their sub-cellular localization, and their ability to complement the parvus mutation in Arabidopsis. Overexpression of the two poplar genes in the parvus mutant rescued most of the defects caused by the parvus mutation, including morphological changes, collapsed xylem, and altered cell wall monosaccharide composition. Quantitative RT-PCR showed that PdgATL1.1 is expressed most strongly in developing xylem of poplar. In contrast, PdgATL1.2 is expressed much more uniformly in leaf, shoot tip, cortex, phloem, and xylem, and the transcript level of PdgATL1.2 is much lower than that of PdgATL 1.1 in all tissues examined. Sub-cellular localization experiments showed that these two proteins are localized to both ER and golgi in comparison with marker proteins resident to these sub-cellular compartments. Our data indicate that PdgATLI.1 and PdgATL1.2 are functional orthologs of PARVUS/ gATL1 and can play a role in xylan synthesis, but may also have role（s） in the synthesis of other wall polymers.

The Impact of Satellite Radiance Data Assimilation within a Frequently Updated Regional Forecast System Using a gSI-based Ensemble Kalman Filter

A regional ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) data assimilation (DA) and forecast system was recently established based on the gridpoint Statistical Interpolation (gSI) analysis system. The EnKF DA system was tested with continuous threehourly updated cycles followed by 18-h deterministic forecasts from every three-hourly ensemble mean analysis. Initial tests showed negative to neutral impacts of assimilating satellite radiance data due to the improper bias correction procedure. In this study, two bias correction schemes within the established EnKF DA system are investigated and the impact of assimilating additional polar-orbiting satellite radiance is also investigated. Two group experiments are conducted. The purpose of the first group is to evaluate the bias correction procedure. Two online bias correction methods based on gSI 3DVar and EnKF algorithms are used to assimilate AMSU-A radiance data. Results show that both variational and EnKF-based bias correction procedures effectively reduce the observation and background radiance differences, achieving positive impacts on forecasts. With proper bias correction, we assimilate full radiance observations including AMSU-A, AMSU-B, AIRS, HIRS3/4, and MHS in the second group. The relative percentage improvements (RPIs) for all forecast variables compared to those without radiance data assimilation are mostly positive, with the RPI of upper-air relative humidity being the largest. Additionally, precipitation forecasts on a downscaled 13-km grid from 40-km EnKF analyses are also improved by radiance assimilation for almost all forecast hours.

Dilution sampling and analysis of particulate matter in biomass-derived syngas

Thermochemical biomass gasification,followedby conversion of the produced syngas to fuels andelectrical power,is a promising energy *** of particulate matter(PM)and othercontaminants in the syngas is important to minimizedamage and ensure efficient operation of the engines itpowers and the fuels created from it.A dilution samplingsystem is demonstrated to quantify PM in syngas generatedfrom two gasification plants utilizing different biomassfeedstocks:a BioMax®15 Biopower System that uses rawand torrefied woodchips as feedstocks,and an integratedbiorefinery(IBR)that uses rice hulls and woodchips ***_(2.5)mass concentrations in syngas from theIBR downstream of the purification system were 12.8-13.7μg·m^(-3),which were significantly lower than themaximum level for catalyst protection(500μg·m^(-3))andwere 2-3 orders of magnitude lower than those inBioMax®15 syngas(2247-4835μg·m^(-3)).Ultrafine particlenumber concentration and PM_(2.5)chemical constituentswere also much lower in the IBR syngas than in theBioMax®*** dilution sampling system enabledreliable measurements over a wide range of concentrations:the use of high sensitivity instruments allowed measurementat very low concentrations(~1μg·m^(-3)),while theflexibility of dilution minimized sampling problems thatare commonly encountered due to high levels of tars in rawsyngas(~1 g·m^(-3)).

The photoluminescence of ZnO films deposited on Si substrates by reactive dc sputtering has been studied by using a synchrotron radiation(SR)light *** excitation spectra show a strong excitation band around 195 nm related to 390 nm emission *** SR vacuum ultraviolet excitation,a new emission band peaked at 290 nm was found for the first time,besides the ultraviolet emission band(390 nm)and green band(520 nm).

Plasmonic response of gold film to potential perturbation

gold film (～50 nm) serves as the working electrode to allow the electrochemical process to be monitored using surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technology. The extracted precise value of time resolved SPR signal perturbed by the non-faradic potential was investigated to study the response time of gold film under potential application. A qualitative model of the reflection and transmission spectra of gold film working as the electrochemical interface is presented. The correlation between three parameters, including thickness of gold film, incident angle and wavelength of beam, were analyzed to generate an optimized configuration for gold film to detect potential. These results emphasis the efficiency of SPR technique used as a diagnostic tool for the electrochemical process.

Dust Acoustic Solitary Waves in Saturn F-ring's Region

Effect of hot and cold dust charge on the propagation of dust-acoustic waves （DAWs） in unmagnetized plasma having electrons, singly charged ions, hot and cold dust grains has been investigated. The reductive perturbation method is employed to reduce the basic set of fluid equations to the Kortewege-de Vries （KdV） equation. At the critical hot dusty plasma density Nho, the KdV equation is not appropriate for describing the system. Hence, a set of stretched coordinates is considered to derive the modified KdV equation. It is found that the presence of hot and cold dust charge grains not only significantly modifies the basic properties of solitary structure, but also changes the polarity of the solitary profiles. In the vicinity of the critical hot dusty plasma density Nho, neither KdV nor mKdV equation is appropriate for describing the DAWs. Therefore, a further modified KdV （fmKdV） equation is derived, which admits both soliton and double layer solutions.
