Prediction of the seismic behavior of an underground railway station and a tunnel in Napoli(Italy)

Semi-real time systems for subsidence monitoring in areas affected by underground mining:the example of the Nuraxi-Figus coal district(Sardinia,Italy)

Underground mining can produce subsidence,which can be coincident with mining activities or delayed in response to the time-dependent deformation of the ***,in these cases,it is essential to effectively monitor the soil deformations at different times during and after mining *** the present work,an integrated approach based on geotechnical numeri-cal modeling and Advanced Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar(A-DInSAR)method has been applied to detect,study and monitor the subsidence related to mining activity in the Nuraxi Figus coal district(Sardinia,Italy).Two datasets of high-resolution COSMO-Skymed images were acquired,respectively in two covering periods:from 2011 and 2014,and from 2013 to ***-DInSAR results show that the predominant displacement rates are located in correspond-ence with the *** cumulated satellite-based LoS displacements vary in the first period between-130 and+28 mm and-293 and+28.4 mm,while,during the second period between-6.9 and+1.6 mm and-8.72 and+4.33 mm in ascend-ing and descending geometries,*** geotechnical numerical model allowed to obtain a value for the maximum *** using the vertical and horizontal components it was possible to reconstruct the kinematics of the deformation considering three phases:pre-mining,syn-mining,and post-mining *** temporal evolution of displacements started during the mining extraction in 2011,achieved the major values in correspondence of post-mining operations,during the period from 2013 to 2014 and continued slowly until *** near real-time monitoring system applied in this study proved to be very useful for detecting subsidence during the mining activity and the post-mining period.

Investigating the Fluid Seal of Supraglottic Airway Devices in Humans Using Indicator Dye via the Drainage Tube:A Potential Roadmap for Future Studies

Background: The fluid seal of supraglottic airway devices (SgA) protects the airway from fluid contamination. We evaluated the suitability of indicator dye placement in the upper digestive tract of anesthetized patients combined with fiberoptical tracing to investigate the fluid seal of SgA. Methods: Patients swallowed a capsule of indigo carmine green (ICg) prior to induction of anaesthesia. After induction of anesthesia, one of two different SgA (either an i-gelTM or an LMA-SupremeTM (LMA-S)) was inserted after randomization. Methylene blue stained normal saline was injected through the proximal opening of drainage tube during mechanical ventilation as well as spontaneous breathing. We monitored regurgitation of ICg with a flexible fiberscope (FO) inserted through the drainage tube and checked for the appearance of methylene blue in the mask bowl with the FO inserted through the airway tube. Results: In thirty-six patients with an i-gelTM and 37 with a LMA-S no regurgitation of ICg was observed at the level of the upper oesophageal sphincter (UES). Methylene blue stained saline was not visible in any patient during pressure-controlled ventilation, but was detected in two of the 36 patients with the i-gelTM during spontaneous breathing. Conclusion: Instilling dye through the drainage tube of SgA models with a built-in drainage tube represents a useful method to examine and to compare the fluid seal of different SgA. Our protocol presented in this study proved to be an easy and reproducible approach for future studies. Furthermore, the clinical results gained during this evaluation highlight the necessity for further investigations regarding the fluid seal competencies of SgAs in humans under clinical conditions.

Nano-confinement of biomolecules： Hydrophilic confinement promotes structural order and enhances mobility of water molecules

Molecular dynamics simulations have been used to investigate the confinement packing characteristics of small hydrophilic （N-acetyl-glycine-methylamide, Nagma） and hydrophobic （N-acetyl-leucine-methylamide, Nalma） biomolecules in large diameter single-wall carbon nanotubes （SWCNTs）. We find that hydrophilic biomolecules easily fill the nanotube and self organize into a geometrical configuration which reminds the water structural organization under SWCNT confinement. The packing of hydrophilic biomolecules inside the cylinder confines all water molecules in its core, which enhances their mobility. Conversely, hydrophobic biomolecules accommodate into the nanotubes with a trend for homogeneous filling, which generate unstable small pockets of water and drive toward a state of dehydration. These results shed light on key parameters important for the encapsulation of biomolecules with direct relevance for long-term storage and prevention of degradation.

The role of LRRK2 on PKA-NFκB pathway in microglia cells: implications for Parkinson’s disease

Leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2), a gene linked to autosomal- dominantly inherited and sporadic Parkinson’s disease (PD) as a risk factor, encodes a large and complex protein with a dual enzymatic activity. LRRK2 contains several domains involved in protein-protein interactions, however, the presence of both a kinase and gTPase domain points to intracellular signaling functions (Marin, 2006). While LRRK2 has been linked to several molecular pathways important for neuronal activity (Martin et al., 2014), the observation that its expression is high in microglia has attracted the attention of different groups to understand whether LRRK2 dysfunctions in these cells may impact neuronal activity as secondary event.

Hierarchical control for generator and battery in the more electric aircraft

This paper addresses the problem of intelligent power management for the more electric aircraft framework. The main objective is to regulate the power flow between a low voltage and a high voltage busses through control of a Buck-Boost converter unit. This approach allows the battery to help the generator when an overload scenario occurs, keeping at the same time the battery state of charge above a prescribed threshold. Moreover, in case a continued severe overload causes the battery state of charge to drop below a prescribed threshold, partial shedding of(noncritical) loads occurs. The control objectives are achieved through the design of a hierarchical control strategy based on high gain control for the low level and a finite state automaton for the high level control. Rigorous mathematical proofs of stability are provided for both low level and high level control and a detailed simulator with accurate model of the battery is presented in order to demonstrate the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

CUBE, a Cable-driven Device for Limb Rehabilitation

In this paper, a novel cable-driven parallel robot, CUBE, is introduced for the assistance of patients in rehabilitation exercising of both upper and lower limbs. The system is characterized by a lightweight structure that is easy to set-up and operate, for both clinical and home usage for both pre-determined and customized exercises, with control over the position of the end-effector while locking its rotation around the horizontal axes. Its cable-driven design makes it inherently safe in human/robot interactions also due to the extremely low inertia. While a novel end-effector design makes the device wearable both on the upper and lower limbs without having to disassemble any part of the structure. The design is presented with its kinematic analysis. Then, the manufacturing through 3D?printing and commercial components of a first prototype is reported. Finally, the system is validated through motion tests along simple trajectories and two different spatial exercises.

Tunable electrochemistry of gold-silver alloy nanoshells

The widespread and increasing interest in enhancing biosensing technologies by increasing their sensitivities and lowering their costs has led to the exploration and application of complex nanomaterials as signal transducers and enhancers. In this work, the electrochemical properties of monodispersed AuAg alloy nanoshells (NSs) with finely tunable morphology, composition, and size are studied to assess their potential as electroactive labels. The controlled corrosion of their silver content, caused by the oxidizing character of dissolved oxygen and chlorides of the electrolyte, allows the generation of a reproducible electrochemical signal that is easily measurable through voltammetric techniques. Remarkably, the underpotential deposition of dissolved Ag+ catalyzed on AuAg NS surfaces is observed and its dependence on the nanoparticle morphology, size, and elemental composition is studied, revealing a strong correlation between the relative amounts of the two metals. The highest catalytic activity is found at Au/Ag ratios higher than ≈ 10, showing how the synergy between both metals is necessary to trigger the enhancement of Ag+ reduction. The ability of AuAg NSs to generate an electrocatalytic current without the need for any strong acid makes them an extremely promising material for biosensing applications.

A group is called a Cernikov group if it is abelian-by-finite and satisfies the minimal condition on subgroups. A new characterization of Cernikov groups is given here, by proving that in a suitable large class of generalised soluble groups they coincide with the groups having only finitely many homomorphic images of finite rank （up to isomorphisms） and admitting an ascending normal series whose factors have finite rank.
