giant electromagnetic pulses(EMP) generated during the interaction of high-power lasers with solid targets can seriously degrade electrical measurements and equipment. EMP emission is caused by the acceleration of hot electrons inside the target, which produce radiation across a wide band from DC to terahertz frequencies. Improved understanding and control of EMP is vital as we enter a new era of high repetition rate, high intensity lasers(e.g. the Extreme Light Infrastructure).We present recent data from the VULCAn laser facility that demonstrates how EMP can be readily and effectively reduced. Characterization of the EMP was achieved using B-dot and D-dot probes that took measurements for a range of different target and laser parameters. We demonstrate that target stalk geometry, material composition, geodesic path length and foil surface area can all play a significant role in the reduction of EMP. A combination of electromagnetic wave and 3 D particle-in-cell simulations is used to inform our conclusions about the effects of stalk geometry on EMP,providing an opportunity for comparison with existing charge separation models.

Evaluation of the Antimicrobial Activity of Endophytic Fungus Isolated from Cocos nucifera(L.) Cotyledon against Medically-Important Pathogens

The study aimed to evaluate the endophytic fungi isolated from Cocos nucifera (L.) cotyledon for their possible antimicrobial activity. A total of twelve endophytic fungal species were successfully isolated, from which five were selected and presumptively identified, including Aspergillus niger, Raffaelea sp., Aspergillus flavus, Cladosporium sp. and Pseudallescheria spp. based on their macro and microscopic characters. The agar blocks of actively growing pure culture were assessed for antibacterial activity against five human pathogenic bacterial and fungal strains: Escherichia coli (BIOTECH 1634), Bacillus subtilis (BIOTECH 1697), Staphylococcus aureus (BIOTECH 1592), Serratia marcescens (BIOTECH 1748), and Candida tropicalis (BIOTECH 2085). Among the selected five endophytic used for antimicrobial activity screening, the Raffaelea sp. (Cn-EF 2) has shown a high zone of inhibition of 11 mm against Bacillus subtilis, 18 mm against Escherichia coli, 15 mm against Staphylococcus aureus, and 11 mm against Candida tropicalis. Correspondingly, Aspergillus niger (Cn-EF 1) has shown a zone of inhibition of 16 mm against C. tropicalis. The endophytic fungus Raffaelea sp. was effective against all test organisms except for Serratia marcescens, while Aspergillus niger was only effective for pathogenic fungi C. albicans. Hence, further in-depth studies of the isolated endophytic fungi are needed to determine the mechanisms behind the endophytes’ inhibitory effects.

Obtaining of nanocomposites in SiC-SiAlOn and Al2O3-SiAlOn System by Alumothermal Processes

Composites were obtained in the in SiC-SiAlOn and Al2O3-SiAlOn system. Physical-chemical processes going on at the obtaining of SiALOn within the range of 800°C - 1500°C were studied. Charge compositions and sintering regime were selected. It was proved that X-SiALOn was obtained at the sintering of kaolin-aluminum powder at 1500°C, while β-SiALOn was formed at the sintering of SiC-Aluminum powder, silicium and Al2O3-aluminum powder, silicium at 1500°C. Corrosion properties of the materials were studied. Investigations were performed by the methods of X-Ray structural and microscopical analysis.

This work aims to develop simulation models that allow locating adequate areas for forest plantations in the state of Mexico. It combines multi-criteria evaluation (MCE) techniques and geographic information systems (gIS) to analyze and simulate future scenarios for forest plantations under three major objectives: commercial production, restoration and protection, and agroforestry. Results demonstrate the potential of this method to integrate different variables of social, economic and environmental nature, and for solve some problems of forest activities and management by locating the most suitable areas for this forestal activity.

n6-methyladenosine(m^(6)A)is a prevalent modification in messenger RnAs and circular RnAs that play important roles in regulating various aspects of RnA ***,the occurrence of the m^(6)A modification in plant circular RnAs has not been reported.A widely used method to identify m^(6)A modifications relies on m^(6)A-specific antibodies followed by next-generation sequencing of precipitated RnAs(MeRIP-Seq).However,one limitation of MeRIP-Seq is that it does not provide the precise location of m^(6)A at single-nucleotide *** more recent sequencing techniques such as nanopore-based direct RnA sequencing(DRS)can overcome such limitations,the technology does not allow sequencing of circular RnAs,as these molecules lack a poly(A)***,we developed a novel method to detect the precise location of m^(6)A modifications in circular RnAs using nanopore *** first enriched our samples for circular RnAs,which we then fragmented and sequenced on the nanopore platform with a customized *** this method,we identified 470 unique circular RnAs from DRS reads based on the back-spliced junction *** exonic circular RnAs,about 10%contained m^(6)A sites,which mainly occurred around acceptor and donor splice *** study demonstrates the utility of our antibody-independent method in identifying total and methylated circular RnAs using nanopore *** method has the additional advantage of providing the exact location of m^(6)A sites at single-base resolution in circular RnAs or linear transcripts from non-coding RnA without poly(A)tails.

nonlinear dynamic analysis of moving bilayer plates resting on elastic foundations

The aim of this study is to investigate the dynamic response of axially moving two-layer laminated plates on the Winkler and Pasternak foundations. The upper and lower layers are formed from a bidirectional functionally graded(Fg) layer and a graphene platelet(gPL) reinforced porous layer, respectively. Henceforth, the combined layers will be referred to as a two-dimensional(2D) Fg/gPL plate. Two types of porosity and three graphene dispersion patterns, each of which is distributed through the plate thickness,are investigated. The mechanical properties of the closed-cell layers are used to define the variation of Poisson’s ratio and the relationship between the porosity coefficients and the mass density. For the gPL reinforced layer, the effective Young’s modulus is derived with the Halpin-Tsai micro-system model, and the rule of mixtures is used to calculate the effective mass density and Poisson’s ratio. The material of the upper 2D-Fg layer is graded in two directions, and its effective mechanical properties are also derived with the rule of mixtures. The dynamic governing equations are derived with a first-order shear deformation theory(FSDT) and the von Kármán nonlinear theory. A combination of the dynamic relaxation(DR) and newmark’s direct integration methods is used to solve the governing equations in both time and space. A parametric study is carried out to explore the effects of the porosity coefficients, porosity and gPL distributions, material gradients, damping ratios, boundary conditions, and elastic foundation stiffnesses on the plate response. It is shown that both the distributions of the porosity and graphene nanofillers significantly affect the dynamic behaviors of the plates. It is also shown that the reduction in the dynamic deflection of the bilayer composite plates is maximized when the porosity and gPL distributions are symmetric.

Determination of Organochlorine Pesticide Residues in Pumpkin, Spinach and Sorrel Leaves grown in Akwanga, nasarawa State, nigeria

Three green leafy vegetable samples of pumpkin leaves, spinach leaves, and sorrel leaves were collected from a farm in Akwanga and were tested for the presence of residues of organochlorine pesticides. The concentrations of all the pesticide residues in the vegetable samples were determined using gC/MS. Among the organochlorine pesticide p,p’-DDT was detected in pumpkin (0.75 mg/kg), spinach (0.319 mg/kg) and sorrel (0.219 mg/kg). θ-BHC and γ-BHC were detected only in pumpkin leaves (0.359 mg/kg and 0.647 mg/kg respectively). Dieldrin was detected in spinach and sorrel (0.124 mg/kg and 0.053 mg/kg respectively). Endrin was detected in pumpkin (0.732 mg/kg) and Aldrin in sorrel (0.095 mg/kg). All these values were above the maximum residue limit (MRL) value of the pesticides. Endosulfan II was detected in sorrel (0.306 mg/kg) below the MRL. The levels of most of the pesticide residues found in vegetables were above the maximum residue limits (MRLs) that call for laws to regulate the use and circulation of such chemicals. Routine monitoring of pesticide residues in this study area is necessary for the prevention, control and reduction of environmental pollution, to minimize health risks.

Diagnostic and therapeutic challenges of gastrointestinal angiodysplasias: A critical review and view points

gastrointestinal angiodysplasias (gIADs), also called angioectasias, are the most frequent vascular lesions. Its precise prevalence is unknown since most of them are asymptomatic. However, the incidence may be increasing since gIADs affect individuals aged more than 60 years and population life expectancy is globally increasing worldwide. They are responsible of about 5% to 10% of all gastrointestinal bleeding (gIB) cases. Most gIADs are placed in small bowel, where are the cause of 50 to 60% of obscure gIB diagnosed with video capsule endoscopy. They may be the cause of fatal severe bleeding episodes;nevertheless, recurrent overt or occult bleeding episodes requiring repeated expensive treatments and disturbing patient’s quality-of-life are more frequently observed. Diagnosis and treatment of gIADs (particularly those placed in small bowel) are a great challenge due to insidious disease behavior, inaccessibility to affected sites and limitations of available diagnostic procedures. Hemorrhagic causality out of the actively bleeding lesions detected by diagnostic procedures may be difficult to establish. no treatment guidelines are currently available, so there is a high variability in the management of these patients. In this review, the epidemiology and pathophysiology of gIADs and the status in the diagnosis and treatment, with special emphasis on small bowel angiodysplasias based on multiple publications, are critically discussed. In addition, a classification of gIADs based on their endoscopic characteristics is proposed. Finally, some aspects that need to be clarified in future research studies are highlighted.

Analytical Signal and Reduction to Pole Interpretation of Total Magnetic Field Data at Eppawala Phosphate Deposit

A magnetic survey was carried out to find out the possibilities of demarcating a phosphate deposit from the surrounding country rocks. It is a well-established fact that the magnetic mapping can be utilised to investigate the subsurface objects, materials or different rock types based on their magnetic properties. Those rocks with ferro-magnetic minerals such as magnetite generate magnetic anomalies which in turn help to investigate the subsurface occurrence of mineral deposits. An economic phosphate deposit in Sri Lanka, known as Eppawala Phosphate deposit was selected for this study. The deposit was formed as an accumulation of secondary products of an apatite-rich carbonatite. Due to weathering of iron-rich carbonatite, magnetite and its derivatives are intimately bound with the said deposit. Therefore, the magnetic signature of the phosphate body is different to that of the surrounding country rocks. Despite some studies on different aspects of the deposit, subsurface extents of the ore body are so far not adequately studied. Therefore, this study was conducted to identify the boundaries of the phosphate body. The study was carried over an area of 12 km2 5 km north from the current mining site and survey was conducted. gSM-19 Overhouser system with integrated gPS was used to collect field data. Magnetic anomalies were plotted using a predefined grid. The maximum positive and negative anomalies encountered in the survey area are 690 nT and 829 nT respectively. This study showed that magnetite is not distributed evenly in the area and the deposit extended along the north south direction. Further, processing of analytical signal using the anomalies showed that the carbonatite occurs as a continuous body trending in north South direction. Low magnetic latitudes magnetic data interpretation is difficult because the vector nature of the magnetic field.
