Application of seminal germ cell morphology and semen biochemistry in the diagnosis and management of azoospermic subjects

Aim: To evaluate whether the study of seminal germ cell morphology (SgCM) and semen biochemistry could befruitfully utilized for the diagnosis and management of azoospermic subjects. Methods: In the semen, mature andimmature germ cells are contributed by the testes, 70% of glycerylphosphoryl choline (gPC) by the epididymis, fruc-tose mostly or solely by the seminal vesicles and acid phosphate (ACP) by the prostate. In 16 normal volunteers, 12vasectomized subjects and 186 azoospennic subjects, these parameters have been studied and the data have been ana-lyzed. Results: Both mature and immature germ cells are absent in the semen of vasectomized subjects as well as inobstructive azoospennia; gPC level is also significantly decreased in both these groups. In cases with non-obstructiveazoospermia immature germ cells are present and seminal gPC, ACP and fructose levels are normal. The diagnosis ofobstructive and non-obstructive azoospermia based on these parameters correlated well with 'correct' testicular biopsyfindings. In some cases of azoospermia due to hypospermatogenesis or spermatogenic developmental arrest, the SgCMstudies were very helpful in objectively monitoring the response of the germinal tissue to specific treaunents. Conclu-sion: SgCM and semen biochemical parameters are very valuable non-invasive markers for differentiating obstructivefrom non-obstructive azoospermia. The SgCM findings serve as a dependable non-invasive testicular marker with highpredictive value. (Asian J Androl 2001 Mar; 3: 55-62)

目的：评价精液中生精细胞形态学及精液生物化学的研究，是否可以对无精子症患者的诊断和处理提供依据。方法：精液中成熟和未成熟的生精细胞由睾心潮生成，70%的甘油磷酰基胆碱（gPC）由附睾合成，果糖大部分或全部来自精囊，酸性磷酸酶（ACP）则来自前列腺。本文检测了16例正常志愿者，12例输精管切除者及186例无精子症患者的上述参数并对结果进行分析。结果：在输精管切除者和阻塞性无精子症者的精液中，均未见到成熟与未成熟的生精细胞，且gPC水平在这两组中也显著下降。而在非阻塞性无精子症患者中，存在有未成熟生精细胞，但gPC、ACP及果糖的水平正常。基于这些参数而作出的阻塞性和非阻塞性无精子症的诊断，与睾丸活检的发现基本一致。在一些由于精子发生低下或者精子发生停滞所致的无精子症患者中，SgCM的研究对客观地检测生精组织对特殊治疗的反应很有帮助。结论：生精细胞形态学及精粹生物化学的参数是一些非常有价值的非侵入性标志，可以区分阻塞性和非阻塞性无精子症，有很高的预示性价值。

Anticancer Activity of Rice Callus Suspension Cultures from Aromatic Varieties and Metabolites Regulated in Treated Cancer Cell lines

Tissue culture techniques were used to produce large amounts of bioactive compounds with medicinal potential, overcoming space and time constraints for cancer prevention. Rice callus suspension cultures(RCSC) and seed extracts prepared from aromatic rice varieties were used to evaluate the cytotoxic impact on human colon and lung cancer cell lines, as well as a normal control cell line, using Taxol as a positive control. RCSC and seed extracts from two Indian aromatic rice varieties were applied at different concentrations to treat the cancer cell lines and normal lung fibroblasts over varying time intervals. Apoptosis was assessed in 1:5 dilutions of the A549 and HT-29 cell lines treated with RCSC for 72 h, using propidium iodide staining and flow cytometry. RCSC showed a more potent cytotoxic effect than seed extracts with minimal effect on the normal cell line, in contrast to Taxol. Confocal microscopy and flow cytometry further confirmed the apoptotic effect of RCSC. gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-based metabolic profiling identified metabolites involved in cytotoxicity and highlighted altered pathways. RCSC is proposed as an alternative source for the development of novel anticancer drugs with reduced side effects.

Electrokinetic-mechanism of water and furfural oxidation on pulsed laser-interlaced Cu_(2)O and CoO on nickel foam

The electrocatalytic oxidation of biomass-derived furfural(FF)feedstocks into 2-furoic acid(FA)holds immense industrial potential in optics,cosmetics,polymers,and ***,we fabricated Co O/Ni O/nickel foam(NF)and Cu_(2)O/Ni O/NF electrodes via in situ pulsed laser irradiation in liquids(PlIl)for the bifunctional electrocatalysis of oxygen evolution reaction(OER)and furfural oxidation reaction(FOR),*** oxidation of NF surface to NiO and deposition of CoO and/or Cu_(2)O on NF during PlIl offer distinct advantages for enhancing both the OER and ***/NiO/NF electrocatalyst provides a consistently low overpotential of~359 m V(OER)at 10 m A/cm^(2),achieving the maximum FA yield(~16.37 m M)with 61.5%selectivity,79.5%carbon balance,and a remarkable Faradaic efficiency of~90.1%during 2 h of FOR at 1.43 V(*** hydrogen electrode).Mechanistic pathway via in situ electrochemical-Raman spectroscopy on CoO/NiO/NF reveals the involvement of phase transition intermediates(NiOOH and CoOOH)as surface-active centers during electrochemical *** carbonyl carbon in FF is attacked by hydroxyl groups to form unstable hydrates that subsequently undergo further oxidation to yield FA *** method holds promise for large-scale applications,enabling simultaneous production of renewable building materials and fuel.

Effects of frothers on bubbles size and flotation performance of hydrophobic minerals

Frothers facilitate the reduction of bubbles size by preventing bubbles coalescence and produce more stable *** collision probability of the bubbles and particles substantially increases by decreasing bubble *** the same volume system,fewer bubbles result from a distribution of large-sized bubbles,and more bubbles result from a distribution of small-sized *** this research,fundamental two-phase frother characterization parameters were aimed to link with three-phase coal and talc flotation *** this purpose,the effect of single and dual frother systems on inhibiting bubble coalescence was investigated with methyl isobutyl carbinol(MIBC),isooctanol(2 ethyl hexanol),pine oil,and Dowfroth *** on the results of single frothers,isooctanol at the lowest critical coalescence concentration(CCC)value of 6×10^(−6) achieved the smallest bubbles with Sauter mean diameter of 0.80 *** blending Dowfroth 250 and pine oil,the bubbles size decreased significantly,reaching 0.45 *** the highest recoveries in coal flotation were obtained in single and frother blends where the bubbles size was measured as the smallest in two-phase system,and such a relationship was not found for talc flotation.
