Degradation and resynthesis of chlorophyll during increased oxidative stress and prolonged darkness differ between annual and perennial flax(Linum L.)

Among plants,there is considerable variation in lifespan:annuals live less than one year,whereas perennials live for several years,with the longest-living perennial having survived 43,600 *** proposed by the Disposable Soma Theory,this lifespan variation among plants likely reflects differential investment of limited energy and nutrient resources,with perennials investing more energy and nutrients into biomolecular maintenance compared to annuals in order to ensure persistence over multiple *** differential investment may be particularly important during periods of exogenous stress,which are known to accelerate biomolecular *** present study evaluated this hypothesis using annual and perennial flax(Linum L.)subjected to two exogenous stressors—increased oxidative stress(i.e.,foliar H2O2spraying)and complete prolonged *** chlorophyll has been shown to exhibit degradation in response to changes in environmental conditions,we utilized changes in chlorophyll levels during and after periods of exogenous stress to evaluate our *** predicted that i)perennials would exhibit a slower rate of chlorophyll degradation during exposure to exogenous stressors compared to annuals,and ii)perennials would exhibit a faster rate of chlorophyll resynthesis following such exposure compared to *** levels before,during,and after exposure to both exogenous stressors were measured in two separate trails,once using image colour analysis and once using *** chlorophyll degradation rates in response to oxidative stress did not differ between annuals and perennials,contrary to our predictions,chlorophyll resynthesis rates following such exposure were significantly higher in perennials,as *** plants were subjected to complete prolonged darkness,chlorophyll degradation rates were significantly lower in perennials than annuals,as predicted;however,when plants were subsequently reintroduced to natural photoperiod,ch

A data-driven reduced-order model for stiff chemical kinetics using dynamics-informed training

A data-based reduced-order model(ROM)is developed to accelerate the time integration of stiff chemically reacting systems by effectively removing the stiffness arising from a wide spectrum of chemical time ***,the objective of this work is to develop a ROM that acts as a non-stiff surrogate model for the time evolution of the thermochemical state vector(temperature and species mass fractions)during an otherwise highly stiff and nonlinear ignition *** model follows an encode-forecast-decode strategy that combines a nonlinear autoencoder(AE)for dimensionality reduction(encode and decode steps)with a neural ordinary differential equation(NODE)for modeling the dynamical system in the AE-provided latent space(forecasting step).By means of detailed timescale analysis by leveraging the dynamical system Jacobians,this work shows how data-based projection operators provided by autoencoders can inherently construct the latent spaces by removing unnecessary fast timescales,even more effectively than physics-based counterparts based on an eigenvalue analysis.A key finding is that the most significant degree of stiffness reduction is achieved through an end-to-end training strategy,where both AE and neural ODE parameters are optimized simultaneously,allowing the discovered latent space to be *** addition to end-to-end training,this work highlights the vital contribution of AE nonlinearity in the stiffness reduction *** the prediction of homogeneous ignition phenomena for H2-air and C2H4-air mixtures,the proposed ROM achieves several ordersof-magnitude increase in the integration time step size when compared to(a)a baseline CVODE solver for the full-chemical system,(b)statistical technique–principal component analysis(PCA),and(c)computational singular perturbation(CSP),a vetted physics-based stiffness-reducing modeling framework.

Home Energy Management Systems(HEMS)are increasingly relevant for demand-side management at the residential level by collecting data(energy,weather,electricity prices)and controlling home appliances or storage *** control can be performed with classical models that find optimal solutions,with high real-time computational cost,or data-driven approaches,like Reinforcement Learning,that find good and flexible solutions,but depend on the availability of load and generation data and demand high computational resources for *** this work,a novel HEMS is proposed for the optimization of an electric battery operation in a real,online and data-driven environment that integrates state-of-the-art load forecasting combining CNN and LSTM neural networks to increase the robustness of *** Reinforcement Learning agents are trained with different algorithms(Double DQN,Dueling DQN,Rainbow and Proximal Policy Optimization)in order to minimize the cost of electricity purchase and to maximize photovoltaic self-consumption for a PV-Battery residential *** show that the best Reinforcement Learning agent achieves a 35%reduction in total cost when compared with an optimization-based agent.

基于合约、借方和贷方三方面特征设计农户民间放贷离散选择实验,依据陕西、山东两省289户农户实验数据,构建效用相互依赖模型考察农户民间放贷选择偏好的内在机理,采用Mixed Logit模型探究农户选择偏好及其异质性来源。研究结果表明,农户民间放贷选择中经济理性与道义理性偏好并存。其中,经济理性体现为农户偏好向亲戚或信用水平较高的借方放贷,农户手头资金紧张时放贷意愿减弱;道义理性体现为农户偏好向经济情况比自己差、曾与自己有过互动经历且用途为生活性应急需求的借方放贷,农户拒贷有压力时放贷意愿增强。进一步研究发现,农户民间放贷选择偏好存在异质性,表现为受教育程度会强化放贷农户经济理性偏好,家庭收入会强化放贷农户道义理性偏好,风险偏好型放贷农户的道义理性偏好更弱,而山东省放贷农户的经济理性和道义理性偏好均高于陕西省。

Nonparametric Feature Screening via the Variance of the Regression Function

This article develops a procedure for screening variables, in ultra high-di- mensional settings, based on their predictive significance. This is achieved by ranking the variables according to the variance of their respective marginal regression functions (RV-SIS). We show that, under some mild technical conditions, the RV-SIS possesses a sure screening property, which is defined by Fan and Lv (2008). Numerical comparisons suggest that RV-SIS has competitive performance compared to other screening procedures, and outperforms them in many different model settings.

Healthcare Services Interoperability in Kenya: Challenges and Opportunities

In an attempt to assess the Kenyan healthcare system, this study looks at the current efforts that are already in place, what challenges they face, and what strategies can be put into practice to foster interoperability. By reviewing a variety of literature and using statistics, the paper ascertains notable impediments such as the absence of standard protocols, lack of adequate technological infrastructure, and weak regulatory frameworks. Resultant effects from these challenges regarding health provision target enhanced data sharing and merging for better patient outcomes and allocation of resources. It also highlights several opportunities that include the adoption of emerging technologies, and the establishment of public-private partnerships to strengthen the healthcare framework among others. In this regard, the article provides recommendations based on stakeholder views and global best practices addressed to policymakers, medical practitioners, and IT specialists concerned with achieving effective interoperability within Kenya’s health system. This research is relevant because it adds knowledge to the existing literature on how healthcare quality can be improved to make it more patient-centered especially in Kenya.
