Vascular endothelial growth factor(VEgF)plays a vital role in promoting attachment and proliferation of endothelial cells,and induces *** recent years,much research has been conducted on the functionalization of tissue engineering scaffolds with VEgF or a VEgF-mimetic peptide to promote ***,most chemical reactions are nonspecific and require organic solvents,which can compromise control over functionalization and alter peptide/protein *** attractive alternative is the fabrication of functionalizable electrospun fibers,which can overcome these *** this study,we used thiol-ene chemistry for the conjugation of a VEgF-mimetic peptide to the surface of poly(ε-caprolactone)(PCL)fibrous scaffolds with varying amounts of a functional PCL-diacrylate(PCL-DA)polymer.30%PCL-DA was selected due to homogeneous fiber morphology.A VEgF-mimetic peptide was then immobilized on PCL-DA fibrous scaffolds by a light-initiated thiol-ene reaction.7-Mercapto-4-methylcoumarin,RgD-FITC peptide and VEgF-TAMRA mimetic peptide were used to validate the thiol-ene reaction on the fibrous *** strength and elastic modulus of the 30%PCL-DA fibrous scaffolds were significantly increased after the *** of the 30%PCL-DA fibrous scaffolds with the VEgF peptide increased the surface water wettability of the *** structures could be obtained after using a photomask on the fibrous ***,in vitro studies indicated that scaffolds functionalized with the VEgF-mimetic peptide were able to induce phosphorylation of the VEgF receptor and enhanced HUVECs survival,proliferation and adhesion.A chick chorioallantoic membrane(CAM)assay further indicated that the VEgF peptide functionalized scaffolds were able to promote angiogenesis in *** results show that scaffold functionalization can be controlled via a simple polymer mixing approach,and that the functionalized VEgF peptide-scaffolds have potential for vascular

Room-temperature fabrication of functional ceramic films using powder aerosol deposition(AD)is important for practical ***,the as-processed ferroelectric films show unusual temperature-dependent dielectric response,including enhanced conductivity in the as-processed state and subsequent significant increase in the permittivity following heat *** this work,we investigate the influence of the residual internal stresses developed during the high-impact consolidation process on the dielectric ***,the recombination of charged defects generated during deposition is driven by the temperature and the atmospheric condition during the heat treatment as well as the carrier gas type used during *** treatment up to 500℃ in different atmospheres was used to tune the dielectric and ferroelectric response,highlighting that irrespective of the type of carrier gas,AD deposition process induces charged defects in polar oxide ceramics that can be reduced through heat-treatment far-below their bulk sintering *** electromechanical properties are contrasted to in-situ heating scanning transmission electron microscopy to observe possible local effects,such as crystallization,grain growth,crystal defect structure,or grain *** addition X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies were conducted to gain insight into the effect of annealing on the crystal structure and local moisture adsorption.

By Ar+ sputtering onto Si wafers which were surrounded by Mo plates, uniform cones over a large area on the Si surface were formed. Scanning electron microscopic study showed that the cones were formed on the entire surface of the Si wafer. The dimensions of the uniform cones were one micrometer in diameter and 5similar to6 micrometer's high. They were further characterized by means of cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy, with the technique of micro-diffractions. It was found that the cone contained a pure Si regime and a Mo-rich regime. In the binary Mo-Si zone, we identified three distinct areas vertically: (1) domains of Mo-induced Si ordered structures, (2) a small volume of a new Mo3Si2 structural variant, intergrown with the Si ordered structure, and (3) a small amount of pure Mo nanoparticles covering the surface of the cones. The formation of the large and uniform cones may provide a new surface configuration for potential applications in surface science and technology.

Cropping Pattern Modifications Change Water Resource Demands in the Beijing Metropolitan Area

Adequate freshwater supply has become an issue of increasing local and international concern. Reducing water use in agriculture, which is the largest water using sector of the economy, is both important and urgent. The aim of this paper was to quantify how recent cropping pattern changes have influenced water resources in the great Beijing metropolitan area, an expanding megacity which also includes rural counties. Crop production affects blue water use through water consumption and water pollution, the latter assessed here using a critical dilution method. From 1990 to 2010, the total blue water used by crop production declined due to a decrease in overall cropped area, initially in response to local government policies favouring urban development. However, the average blue water use per hectare increased from 2 112 m3 ha-~ yr-~ in 1990 to 2 764 m3 ha-1 yr-1 in 2003, largely as the result of a transition from cereal to vegetable crops, and in particular an increase in intensively managed plastic and glass covered vegetable production systems. Current policies aim to conserve agricultural land, in the interests of food security, and to stimulate cereal production systems with higher ecosystem services provision. As such, in 2010 the average blue water use was 2 425 m3 ha-~ yr-l. These results demonstrate that cropping pattern changes in peri-urban regions and rural communities surrounding the Beijing metropolitan area can have a substantial impact on water resources. They also highlight the tradeoffs between food production and urban and industrial water supply and the need for integrated policy development.

Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis are a heterogeneous group of debilitating disorders with multifactorial etiologies and pathogeneses that manifest distinct molecular mechanisms and clinical manifestations with abnormal protein dynamics and impaired bioenergetics. Mitochondrial dysfunction is emerging as an important feature in the etiopathogenesis of these age-related neurodegenerative diseases. The prevalence and incidence of these diseases is on the rise with the increasing global population and average lifespan. Although many therapeutic approaches have been tested, there are currently no effective treatment routes for the prevention or cure of these diseases. We present the current status of our knowledge and understanding of the involvement of mitochondrial dysfunction in these diseases and highlight recent advances in novel therapeutic strategies targeting neuronal bioenergetics as potential approach for treating these diseases.
