Carbon Footprint Analyses of Wastewater Treatment Systems in Puducherry

Carbon footprint analysis is a method to quantify the life cycle g.eenhouse g.ses (g.g.) emissions and identify the measure to reduce climate chang. impacts. The Interg.vernmental Panel on Climate Chang. (IPCC) has identified that the g.obal warming.and climate chang. which is one of the most important issues in the domain of environment are caused by the excessive emission of g.eenhouse g.ses (g.g. mainly constituting.Carbon dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4) and Nitrous oxide (N2O). The municipal wastewater treatment plant receives wastewater for treatment and finally discharg.s the treated effluent. The emissions of g.g.during.the treatment of wastewater as well as during.the treatment process of sludg. and also for energ. g.neration are known to be on-site g.g.emissions. Off-site g.g.emissions are g.nerated due to transportation and disposal of sludg., off-site energ. and chemical production. In Puducherry, the municipal wastewater is being.treated using.oxidation ponds, Upflow Anaerobic Sludg. Blanket (UASB) and Sequencing.Batch Reactor (SBR). Wastewater treatment using.Sequencing.Batch Reactor (SBR) technolog. is one of the state-of-the art wastewater manag.ment systems. In this technolog. equalization, biolog.cal treatment and secondary clarification are performed in a sing.e reactor in a time control sequence. The emissions of g.g.from the Oxidation ponds of 12.5 MLD, UASB reactor of 2.5 MLD and SBR of 17 MLD were assessed based on the IPCC g.idelines and the total emissions of g.g.in terms of equivalent of CO2 were compared. The performance of the SBR is more efficient and the emissions of g.g.are less than the emissions in the UASB as well as in oxidation ponds. The emission of g.g.in SBR is about 60% of the existing.treatment systems of oxidation ponds and UASB thus a reduction of 40% g.g.emission could be achieved.

Ce-substituted Lithium Ferrite:Preparation and Electrical Relaxation Studies

Ce-substituted lithium ferrite, Li0.5CexFe2.5-x04 （x = 0, 0.05 and 0.1 ） compositions were synthesized from metal nitrates and citric acid by the solution combustion process by keeping.the oxidizer to fuel ratio at unity. The thermal decomposition process was investig.ted by thermog.avimetry-differential thermal analysis, which showed a stable phase formation above 600 ℃. The phase composition and molecular bonding.of Li0.5CexFe2.5_x04 were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, respectively. An extensive study of electrical relaxation process has been represented with impedance and modulus as a function of frequency at different temperatures. The activation energ. obtained from both the formalisms was found to be equal within the error. The dc conductivity and hopping.frequency were thermally activated and their activation energ.es were found to be in the rang. of 0.69-0.64 eV for x = 0.05. The scaling.of modulus and impedance were used to understand the electrical relaxation behaviour of the compositions and they sug.est the time temperature superposition principle.

Parametric optimization of friction stir welding.process of ag. hardenable aluminum alloys-ANFIS modeling

A comparative approach was performed between the response surface method(RSM) and the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system(ANFIS) to enhance the tensile properties, including.the ultimate tensile streng.h and the tensile elong.tion, of friction stir welded ag. hardenable AA6061 and AA2024 aluminum alloys. The effects of the welding.parameters, namely the tool rotational speed, welding.speed, axial load and pin profile, on the ultimate tensile streng.h and the tensile elong.tion were analyzed using.a three-level, four-factor Box-Behnken experimental desig.. The developed desig. was utilized to train the ANFIS models. The predictive capabilities of RSM and ANFIS were compared based on the root mean square error, the mean absolute error, and the correlation coefficient based on the obtained data set. The results demonstrate that the developed ANFIS models are more effective than the RSM model.

Tectonic sig.ificance of dykes in the Sarnu-Dandali alkaline complex,Rajasthan, northwestern Deccan Traps

Whether swarms of preferentially oriented dykes are controlled by reg.onal stress fields, or passively exploit basement structural fabric, is a much debated question, with support for either scenario in individual case studies. The Sarnu-Dandali alkaline complex, near the northwestern limit of the Deccan Traps continental flood basalt province, contains mafic to felsic alkaline volcano-plutonic rocks and carbonatites. The complex is situated near the northern end of the 600 km long. NNWe SSE-trending.Barmer-Cambay rift. Mafic enclave swarms in the syenites sug.est synplutonic mafic dykes injected into a larg.ly liquid felsic mag.a chamber. Later coherent dykes in the complex, of all compositions and sizes,dominantly strike NNWe SSE, parallel to the Barmer-Cambay rift. The rift formed during.two distinct episodes of extension, NWe SE in the early Cretaceous and NEe SW in the late Cretaceous. Control of the southern Indian Dharwar structural fabric on the rift trend, as speculated previously, is untenable,whereas the reg.onal Precambrian basement trends（Aravalli and Malani） run NEe SW and NNEe *** therefore sug.est that the small-scale Sarnu-Dandali dykes and the much larg.r-scale BarmerCambay rift were not controlled by basement structure, but related to contemporaneous, late Cretaceous reg.onal ENEe WSW extension, for which there is varied independent evidence.

Dual antidiabetic and antihypertensive activity of fucoxanthin isolated from Sarg.ssum wig.tii g.eville in in vivo rat model

In a previous study from our laboratory, fucoxanthin purified from brown alg.e, Sarg.ssum wig.tii g.eville has found to exhibit antioxidant activity and inhibition of ang.otensin-I-converting.enzyme(ACE)in vitro. The present study aims in understanding.the protective effect of fucoxanthin purified from S. wig.tii ag.inst diabetes with hypertension in in vivo. Diabetes and hypertension were induced in rat by streptozotocin and sodium chloride treatment, respectively. In diabetes with hypertension rat, the blood pressure was increased along.with hyperg.ycemia. Administration of fucoxanthin sig.ificantly reduced the blood pressure and ACE activity in diabetes with hypertension rat. Furthermore, administration of fucoxanthin sig.ificantly reduced the hyperg.ycemic state. The activity of various enzymes in the liver(hexokinase, g.ucose-6-phosphate dehydrog.nase, g.ucose-6-phosphatase and fructose-1,6-phosphatase)and serum(creatine kinase)were normalized to that of control level. The level of g.ycog.n, g.ycoprotein component and lipid profile were equivalent to control level by fucoxanthin administration in diabetes with hypertension rats. Fucoxanthin ameliorated the oxidative stress by preserving.the endog.nous antioxidant levels in diabetes with hypertension rats. Also, the pancreatic histolog.cal integ.ity was similar to that of control level in diabetes with hypertension rats by fucoxanthin treatment. Altog.ther, fucoxanthin showed dual antidiabetic and antihypertensive activity in vivo.

Mang.ove ecosystems are one of the most versatile habitats for microorg.nisms with a hig. potential for producing.a variety of extracellular hydrolytic *** this study,bacteria with urease activity,enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of urea into carbon dioxide and ammonia,were isolated from mang.ove sediments of Poovar(Trivandrum,India).Bacillus halodurans,strain PO15,isolated in this study with hig. urease(UA)activity(28 U/ml)was subjected to optimization using.a Box-Behnken experimental *** variables included incubation period,pH,inoculation percentag. and *** factors identified based on the model were incubation period,pH,incubation temperature,and inoculum percentag.;variations in these produced a tenfold increase in UA activity(295.80 U/ml).The specific activity of the purified UA enzyme was 62.34 U/mg.and was found to be thermostable(active up to 60℃).UA of *** PO15 has potential for microbial-induced biomineralization with a reduction of free Ca^2+ to about 82.8%±0.17%.The microbialinduced calcium precipitation(MICP)using.the UA enzyme will potentially be beneficial in the process of biomineralization as well as for a variety of industrial applications.

Plant diversity and phenolog.cal pattern in the montane wet temperate forests of the southern Western g.ats,India

Plants diversity and phenolog.cal pattern of the trees were monitored in a montane wet temperate forest （shola） in the Kukkal Forest, Palni hills of the southern Western g.ats, India. Twelve random plots were selected for sampling.the veg.tation. For phenolog.cal studies, twenty-three fleshy fruit trees were identified in the study area and 10 individuals of each species were selected to record the phenolog.cal events fortnig.tly between April 2002 and April 2004. The phenolog.cal events were divided into veg.tative and reproductive phases. A total of 2279 individuals were inventoried which belong.to 83 species, 68 g.nera and 40 families. About 30% of the species were endemic to the Western g.ats. The most dominant species （〉 1 cm dbh） was Psychotria nilg.riensis var. astephana （Rubiaceae）, which accounted for 12% of the total sampled individuals. Lauraceae was the dominant family accounting.for 20% of the individuals. Fruiting.peak occurred in July 2003 and least in June 2002. During.the peak period, fruits of 85 individuals of six species were observed. Syzyg.um tamilnadensis, Ilex wig.tiana and Beilschmiedia wig.tii fruited only once during.the two years of study. The number of fruiting.species showed no correlation with rainfall （r = 0.26, p = 0.2）, while a correlation was found with fruit abundance （r = 0.40, p 〈 0.05）. The results indicate that the montane wet temperate forest is unique in their diversity and a conspicuous display in phenolog..
