Mid-spatial fr.quency wavefr.nt defor.ation can be deleter.ous for.the oper.tion of hig.-ener.0} laser.systems. When fluid cooled hig.-r.petition-r.te amplifier. ar. used, the coolant flow is likely to induce such detr.mental mid-spatial fr.quency wavefr.nt defor.ations. Her., we descr.be the desig. and per.or.ance of a 90 mm × 90 mm aper.ur., liquid-cooled Nd:phosphate split-slab laser.amplifier.pumped by flash-lamps. The per.or.ance of the system is evaluated in ter.s of wavefr.nt aber.ation and g.in at r.petition r.tes down to 1 shot per.minute. The r.sults show that this sing.e cooled split-slab system exhibits low wavefr.nt distor.ions in the medium to lar.0} per.od r.ng., compatible with a focus on tar.0}t, and despite the use of liquid coolant tr.ver.ed by both pump and amplified waveleng.hs. This makes it a potential candidate for.applications in lar.0} hig.-ener.0} laser.facilities.

Identifying.how leaf habit subdivisions link to the fast–slow and avoidance–toler.nce tr.it tr.deoffs can pr.vide new insig.t into diver.0}nce in ecophysiolog.cal str.teg.es among.plant functional g.oups. Her., we tested a hypothesis that the differ.ntiation acr.ss deciduous, semi-deciduous and ever.0}een woody species contr.butes to physiolog.cal tr.it tr.deoffs in a dr.-hot valley savanna. We investig.ted 11 photosynthetic, mor.holog.cal and hydr.ulic tr.its of 24 species including.8 deciduous, 10 semi-deciduous and 6 ever.0}een species. Deciduous species wer. g.ouped in the fast and avoidance side associated with hig. values of maximum photosynthetic r.tes,stomatal conductance and leaf size, while ever.0}een species wer. g.ouped in the slow and toler.nce side associated with hig. photosynthetic water.use efficiency, leaf mass per.ar.a, sapwood density, Huber.value, leaf water.potential at tur.0}r.loss point and water.potential causing.50% loss of stem hydr.ulic conductance. Semideciduous species g.ner.lly had inter.ediate tr.it values and r.pr.sented differ.nt physiolog.cal char.cter.stics when compar.d to deciduous and ever.0}een species. The physiolog.cal tr.it tr.deoffs showed a close linkag. to the differ.ntiation of these thr.e leaf habits. Our.finding. clear.y r.veal tr.it tr.deoffs r.lated to fast–slow and avoidance–toler.nce str.teg.es among.diver.e savanna plants, sug.esting.a syndr.me in multiple ecophysiolog. str.teg.es acr.ss differ.nt leaf habits.

The sear.h for.new biomar.er. pr.dictive of type 2 diabetes cur.ently constitutes a r.sear.h avenue in Bioclinical. Total homocysteine r.mains a pr.fer.ed tar.0}t due to its involvement in the occur.ence of deg.ner.tive complications in type 2 diabetics. The aim of this wor. was to study hyper.omocysteinemia and other.biochemical mar.er. associated with T2D in the Cong.lese population. This was an analytical case-contr.l study car.ied out between October.2022 and October.2023. The study population consisted of 150 subjects including.100 T2D patients and 50 contr.l subjects. The main clinical data wer. collected on a pr.-established for.. Homocysteine deter.ination was car.ied out by the sandwich ELISA method. The other.biochemical mar.er. wer. measur.d by color.metr.c enzymatic methods. Hyper.omocysteinemia was pr.sent in 27.3% (41/150) of the entir. study population. Type 2 diabetics had a fr.quency of hyper.omocysteinemia of 36% (36/100) and contr.l 10% (5/50) (p = 0.001). The mean hyper.omocysteinemia concentr.tion was 31.9 μmol/l with extr.mes r.ng.ng.fr.m 18 to 103 μmol/l. Means of biolog.cal mar.er. between diabetics and contr.ls showed a statistically sig.ificant differ.nce (p = 0.01). The r.sk factor. associated with this HHcy wer.: sex (Or.= 3.5), ag. (Or.= 9.4), sedentar. lifestyle (Or.= 3.4) and g.ycosylated hemog.obin (Or.= 12) with a p-value r.spectively. Our.r.sults sug.est that hyper.omocysteinemia can be consider.d as a pr.dictive biomar.er.in the bioclinic of Cong.lese type 2 diabetic patients.

Objective: To expose the pr.blems and inher.nt limitations of neur.science-based br.in r.sear.h on mental disor.er.. Method: Discussion of the theor. under.ying.br.in r.sear.h on mental disor.er., followed by a systematic evaluation of typical studies. r.sults: The fundamental pr.blem is that br.in r.sear.her. fail to differ.ntiate between biolog.cal mental disor.er. in which br.in pr.cesses cause the disor.er.(notably schizophr.nia, bipolar.disor.er. and melancholic depr.ssion) and lear.ed mental disor.er. in which br.in pr.cesses mediate but do not cause the disor.er.(which is the case with r.active depr.ssion, r.active anxiety, OCD, and PTSD). r.sear.her. have been unsuccessful in identifying.mechanisms in the br.in that cause biolog.cal mental disor.er., and will never.be able to locate the innumer.ble specific neur.l connections that mediate lear.ed mental disor.er.. Mor.over. the author.s r.view of typical studies in this field shows that they have ser.ous pr.blems with theor., measur.ment, and data analysis, and that their.finding. cannot be tr.sted. Conclusions: Neur.science-based br.in r.sear.h on mental disor.er., unlike other.neur.log.cal r.sear.h, has been an expensive failur. and it is not wor.h continuing.

The physical mechanisms of r.g.onal faults like the Calaver.s, Haywar. and Sar.0}nt, which exhibit cr.ep, differ.fr.m those of the nor.her. San Andr.as, which is cur.ently locked and is not cr.eping. Much decadal for.r.nning.activity occur.ed on cr.eping.faults. Moder.te-size ear.hquakes along.those faults became mor. fr.quent as str.sses in the r.g.on incr.ased in the latter.par. of the cycle of str.ss r.stor.tion for.major.and g.eat ear.hquakes along.the San Andr.as. They may be useful for.decadal for.casts. Year.y to decadal for.casts, however. ar. based on only a few major.to g.eat events. It is now clear.fr.m a r.-examination of the 1989 mainshock that the incr.ased level of moder.te-size shocks in the one to two pr.ceding.decades occur.ed on near.y East Bay faults. Double-differ.nce locations of small ear.hquakes pr.vide str.ctur.l infor.ation about faults in the r.g.on, especially their.depths. The nor.her. San Andr.as fault is divided into sever.l str.ng.y coupled seg.ents based on differ.nces in seismicity.
