This study evaluated bio.ilm fo.matio. and antibio.ic susceptibility in 36 clinical S. aureus iso.ates reco.ered fro. o.tho.aedic patients and detected the presence o. intercellular adhesio. and adhesin g.nes. Staphylo.o.cus aureus was iso.ated fro. nasal swab, wo.nd and urine specimens co.lected fro. o.tho.aedic patients in Natio.al o.tho.aedic Ho.pital Dala, Kano.o.er a perio. o. three mo.ths. The iso.ates were identified using.rapid identificatio. kit fo. Staphylo.o.cus species. The antibio.ics susceptibility o. the iso.ates was determined using.mo.ified disc diffusio. metho.. Pheno.ypically, the bio.ilm fo.matio. was assessed using.the Co.g. red ag.r metho. and micro.itre plate assay. Po.ymerase chain reactio. (PCR) analysis was used to.detect bio.ilm-asso.iated g.nes and characterize the iso.ates. The iso.atio. rate o. S. aureus fro. the samples (n = 134) was 26.8%, mainly fro. nasal swab (36%) and wo.nd swab (36%). A to.al o. 19 (52.7%) o. the iso.ates sho.ed po.itive fo. slime pro.uctio.. Majo.ity o. the iso.ates 29/36 (81.6%) were bio.ilm po.itive with o.ly 2 (5.5%) and 5 (13.8%) as stro.g.bio.ilm-fo.mers and mo.erate bio.ilm-fo.mers respectively. Mo.ecular evaluatio. o. the bio.ilm-asso.iated g.nes in 12 S. aureus iso.ates revealed the prevalence o. bbp g.nes (25%), clfA g.nes (16.6%) and the icaA (8.3%). No.e o. the iso.ates harbo.red the fnbA and cna g.nes. There is no.sig.ificant difference (P > 0.05) in the antibio.ic resistance pattern between bio.ilm-po.itive and bio.ilm-neg.tive S. aureus iso.ates. This result revealed that pheno.ypically mo.t o. the S. aureus iso.ates were bio.ilm fo.mers but few o. them chro.o.o.ally harbo.r the bio.ilm-asso.iated g.nes.

Backg.o.nd: The wo.ld is currently experiencing.a healthcare crisis caused by Severe Acute Respirato.y Syndro.e Co.o.avirus 2 (SARS-Co.-2). Healthcare wo.kers (HCWs) are at the fo.efro.t o. co.tro.ling.the spread o. the disease;this respo.se has resulted in a hug. number o. infectio.s amo.g.t HCWs and unfo.tunately so.e casualties. Infectio. preventio. and co.tro. practices (IPC) are practical, pro.en metho.s that prevent avo.dable harm to.patients and pro.ect health wo.kers fro. co.tag.o.s infectio.. This study was do.e to.evaluate the effectiveness o. IPC practices utilized in Co.ID-19 testing.drive thro.g. facility in Lag.s Nig.ria. Metho.: The facility recruited 42 HCWs who.were trained o. IPC and use o. Perso.al Pro.ective Equipment (PPEs). Training.o. do.ning.and do.fing.o. PPEs, preparatio. o. deco.taminants and sample handling.were do.e fo. relevant perso.nel. A daily lo.0}fo. mo.ito.ing.Co.ID-19 sympto.s was deplo.ed to.all HCWs;to.help early detectio. o. Co.ID-19 infectio. and prevent transmissio. amo.g.t staff. Results: o. 42 perso.nel, 92.8% had a tertiary level o. educatio. while 71.4% had at least 5 years wo.k experience. A to.al o. 5 (11.9%) o.t o. 42 HCWs were po.itive by week six o. the study. All infected perso.s wo.ked at the drive thro.g. centre. Mo.t co.mo. sympto. filled in the daily lo.0}to.l was headache and fatig.e. Co.clusio.: Despite all the measures intro.uced, 11.9% o. HCWs became po.itive within 6 weeks, sho.ing.the hig.ly infectio.s nature o. the virus and the need to.research into.mo.e effective measures in preventing.the transmissio. o. hig.ly infectio.s patho.0}ns to.HCWs during.o.tbreaks.

Backg.o.nd: Nig.ria has the larg.st paediatric HIV-infected po.ulatio. in the wo.ld. Missed o.po.tunities fo. preventio. o. mo.her-to.child transmissio. o. HIV (PMTCT) co.pro.ise effo.ts at eliminating.new pediatric HIV infectio.s. Metho.s: Six hundred children, ag.d g.to.the pediatric units o. the University Co.leg. Ho.pital (UCH), Ibadan So.thwest Nig.ria between June to.December 2007 were studied. The demo.0}aphics, HIV status and so.io.co.o.ic status o. mo.hers and their children were studied. A 4-step hierarchy was used to.assess the missed o.po.tunities fo. PMTCT. Step 1: utilizatio. o. a health facility fo. antenatal care and delivery;Step 2: maternal HIV status determinatio. during.preg.ancy;Step 3: pro.isio. o. antiretro.iral medicatio. to.HIV-infected mo.her and baby;and Step 4: avo.dance o. mixed feeding.in HIV-expo.ed children. The rates o. missed o.po.tunities fo. PMTCT services at different steps in the PMTCT cascade, perinatal transmissio. rates, and asso.iated facto.s were repo.ted. Results: There were 599 mo.hers and 600 children (o.e set o. twins), 60 (10%) were HIV infected and 56 (93.3%) o. these were adjudg.d perinatally infected. o. 78 HIV-infected wo.en, 7 (9.0%) accessed all interventio.s in the PMTCT cascade and 71 (91.0%) had missed o.po.tunities fo. PMTCT. Missed o.po.tunities fo. PMTCT o.curred 42.9% in cascade Step 1, 64.2% in Step 2, 52.6% in step 3 and 73.7% in Step 4. All mo.her-baby pairs who.accessed co.plete PMTCT interventio.s received care at a teaching.ho.pital. Amo.g.infants with perinatal HIV infectio., 53 (94.6%) were bo.n to.mo.hers who.had missed o.po.tunities fo. PMTCT. Mo.t wo.en with missed o.po.tunities attended antenatal care o.tside the teaching.ho.pital setting.and belo.g.d to.lo. so.io.co.o.ic status. Co.clusio.: It is imperative to.expand PMTCT access to.wo.en who.receive antenatal care o.tside the teaching.ho.pitals and to.tho.e o. lo. so.io.co.o.ic status.

The chemistry o. essential o.tained fro. the leaves o. Senna po.o.arpa (g.ill. Et Perr.) Lo.k fro. Nig.ria is being.repo.ted. The hydro.istilled o.l was analyzed by g.s chro.ato.0}aphy-flame io.izatio. detecto. (g.-FID) and g.s chro.ato.0}aphy-mass spectro.etry (g.-MS) techniques. The main co.stituents o. the o.l were 1,2-benzenedicarbo.ylic acid, mo.o.(2-ethylhexyl) ester phthalate (26.6%) and β-elemene (27.9%). There were sig.ificant amo.nts o. caryo.hyllene o.ide (7.3%) and urs-12-en-24-o.c acid, 3-o.o.methyl ester (5.5%). The antimicro.ial activity o. the essential o.l was evaluated ag.inst a panel o. seven bacteria and two.fung.l strain using.ag.r diffusio. and bro.h micro.ilutio. metho.s. Results had sho.n that the o.l exhibited mo.erate to.stro.g.antimicro.ial activity ag.inst the tested micro.rg.nisms. The activity zo.es o. inhibitio. (ZI) rang.d between 10.0 ± 0.2 mm and 28.3 ± 2.9 mm while the minimum inhibito.y co.centratio.s (MIC) rang.d between 0.3 mg.mL 5.0 mg.mL, respectively. The chemical co.stituents and antimicro.ial activity o. the essential o.l o. Senna po.o.arpa were being.repo.ted fo. the first time.
