Conflict Resolution and Manag.ment between Local Fishers and Tour Operators in the Okavang. Delta’s Panhandle, Botswana

Conflicts among.different fisher g.oups are a g.obal concern, and the Okavang. Delta fishery is no exception, which is composed of commercial, subsistence and recreational fishers. Possibly due to conflicting.value/use systems, and ill-defined user rig.ts, there have been documented cases of conflict between commercial and recreational fishers, which may affect livelihoods for local fishers. Therefore, this study’s aim was to identify causes of conflict between these g.oups and to propose manag.ment inventions. Primary data collected in three fishing.villag.s showed that lack of access, misconceptions about each other, and overlapping.use were identified as some of the major causes of conflict. Subsequently, this paper proposes a spatial and temporal zoning.of fishing.g.ounds as a manag.ment tool towards conflict resolution. One proposal is that recreational fishers can utilize the main channel, commercial fishers the floodplains and lag.ons, while basket fishers can utilize the fring.s of floodplains, lag.ons and river channel. Moreover, a co-manag.ment reg.me has also been developed in the fishery, upon which a code of conduct was developed to also reduce conflict in the fishery. It is envisag.d that this approach will reduce conflict and create an enabling.environment for efficient and sustainable fish utilization in the Delta.

A Comprehensive Economic Assessment of Producing.Biodiesel Derived from Used Cooking.Oil Using.the BioPro380 EX

The authors performed economic assessment of producing.biodiesel at pilot scale using.used cooking.oil as feed-oil in a Bio-Pro 380 EX biodiesel reactor. The overall results sug.est that the biodiesel production using.used cooking.oil is a viable project even at larg. or medium scale. The payback period for producing.biodiesel at a pilot scale of 31,320 liters per year was 1.5 years, which was 1 month long.r than the payback period for a larg. plant capacity of 66,000 liters per year. The study demonstrated that the unit selling.price and unit production cost are sensitive to the economic feasibility of biodiesel production, since price variations of BWP 1 result in at least a 13% increase and 12% decrease in profit, respectively. The study further revealed that feed-oil (used cooking.oil) was the most expensive among.all the inputs accounting.for 61%, followed by methanol and direct labour with 19% and 13% respectively. The overall energ. recorded to produce approximately 360 liters of biodiesel contributed to 2% only, sug.esting.that Bio-Pro 380 EX biodiesel reactor is relatively a low energ. intensity processor. The situation is suitable for the promotion of biodiesel particularly in countries where initiatives to stimulate the development of biofuels are at its infant stag. Botswana included.

Upon the realization that urban areas can only achieve sustainable solid waste manag.ment systems throug. an interplay of partnerships and stakeholders,developing.countries have g.ared themselves towards the privatization of waste manag.ment services in efforts to reduce costs and improve ***,a town located in the south of Botswana,faces the increasing.challeng.s of poor waste manag.ment due to the lack of finances and resources available to the Lobatse Town Council,which hinders efforts towards a sustainable waste manag.ment *** has neg.tive implications for public health and the environment,as a result of solid waste pollution from littering.and the illeg.l dumping.of *** work examines the current state of solid waste manag.ment and its challeng.s in Lobatse,within the context of the interplay between public and private solid waste *** study aims to perform a social exploration of the efficiency of waste manag.ment services,considering.the political economy and households’perceptions towards these *** stakeholders were interviewed and a social survey of 222 households was conducted to g.nerate primary *** finding. indicate that the involvement of the private sector yielded positive outcomes,as it increased the solid waste collection frequency and improved the quality of the waste manag.ment *** of the stakeholders were in favor of privatization,and the households were satisfied and willing.to contribute towards the cost recovery of solid waste *** is,therefore,recommended to promote and establish a private-public-community partnership in the town to improve the quality of the waste manag.ment system.
