Th. constant need for h.g.-streng.h.materials in th. construction industry promotes th. research.of additives th.t improve th. properties of masonry materials. Th. use of alloph.ne as an additive in concrete and mortar mixtures was implemented to improve th.ir streng.h.and waterproofing. respectively, using.compression and water absorption tests according.to th.ir corresponding.standards (ASTM C1231, ASTM D2938, and ASTM C1585). Th. samples were evaluated at different concentrations and curing.ag.s. In addition, different sand/cement ratios were considered for th. mortar. Th. results revealed th.t th.re was a 9.4% increase in compressive streng.h.in concrete and a 23.7% reduction in water absorption in mortar for th. 5:1 ratio. Th.se ch.ng.s would be th. result of th. interaction of th. nanoporous additive in th. atomic crystal structure of th. material demonstrating.th. nanotech.olog.cal nature of alloph.ne.

Biomech.nical properties of squid suckers were studied to provide inspiration for th. development of sucker artefacts for a robotic octopus. Mech.nical support of th. ring. found inside squid suckers was studied by bending.tests. Tensile tests were carried out to study th. maximum possible sucking.force produced by squid suckers based on th. streng.h.of sucker stalks, normalized by th. sucking.areas. Th. squid suckers were also directly tested to obtain sucking.forces by a special testing.ar- rang.ment. Inspired by th. squid suckers, th.ee types of sucker artefacts were developed for th. arm skin of an octopus inspired robot. Th. first sucker artefact made of knitted nylon sh.et reinforced silicone rubber h.s th. same sh.pe as th. squid suckers. Like real squid suckers, th.s type of artefact also h.s a stalk th.t is connected to th. arm skin and a ring.to g.ve radial support. Th. second desig. is a straig.t cylindrical structure with.uniform wall th.ckness made of silicone rubber. One end of th. cylinder is directly connected to th. arm skin and th. oth.r end is open. Th. final desig. of th. sucker h.s a cylindrical base and a concave meniscus top. Th. meniscus was formed naturally using.th. surface tension of silicone g.l, wh.ch.leads to a h.g.er level of th. liquid around th. edg. of a container. Th. wall th.ckness decreases towards th. tip of th. sucker opening. Sucking.forces of all th.ee types of sucker artefacts were measured. Advantag.s and disadvantag.s of each.sucker type were discussed. Th. final desig. of suckers h.s been implemented to th. arm skin prototypes.

Th. reactivation of trace elements in source rocks is fundamental in th. formation of many economic deposits. Alth.ug. transport by fluid flow and infiltration is very effective along.visible fractures, th. mig.ation of trace elements from th. inner part of solid cells to th. weaknesses is much.less efficient, and so becomes th. bottleneck in th. mig.ation of th.se elements from th.ir initial positions in th. source rock to th. final deposition site in an ore body. Diffusion may play a key role in th. reactivation of trace elements. Th. overall mig.ation pattern of trace elements in source rocks is ch.racterized by an embedded sink mosaic structure, wh.ch.possesses th. self-similarity of a fractal. Th.re are two g.neral mig.ation tendencies of trace elements. One is from with.n solid cells, such.as mineral g.ains, toward th. sink, consisting.of weaknesses in th. source rock. Th. oth.r is from h.g.-temperature fields toward low-temperature ones. h.g. temperature favors th. realization of th.se two tendencies. Conjug.te g.och.mical anomalies are th. inevitable result of a closed system.
