Several popular time-frequency techniques,including.the Wig.er-Ville distribution,smoothed pseudo-Wig.er-Ville distribution,wavelet transform,synchrosqueezing.transform,Hilbert-Huang.transform,and g.bor-Wig.er transform,are investig.ted to determine how well they can identify damag. to *** this work,a synchroextracting.transform(SET)based on the short-time Fourier transform is proposed for estimating.post-earthquake structural *** performance of SET for artificially g.nerated sig.als and actual earthquake sig.als is examined with existing.*** other tested techniques,SET improves frequency resolution to a g.eat extent by lowering.the influence of smearing.along.the time-frequency ***,interpretation and readability with the proposed method are improved,and small chang.s in the time-varying.frequency characteristics of the damag.d building. are easily detected throug. the SET method.

In a developing.country like ghana, the study of land use and land cover chang.(LULCC) based on satellite imag.ries still remains a challeng. due to cost, resolution and availability with less skilled man power. Existing.researches are skewed towards the southerly part of ghana thereby leaving.the Northern sectors uncovered. The maximum likelihood classification(MLC) alg.rithm was employed for the LULCC between 2000 and 2014 in Nadowli: an area characterized by an upsurg. in mining.in the Northern belt of ghana. A spatial-social approach was utilized combining.both satellite imag.ry and socio economic data. Land use transition matrix, land use integ.ated index/deg.ee indices was used to depict the characters of the chang.. A semi structured interview, pair wise ranking.and key informant interviews were used to correlate the socio economic impact of the different LULC. Overall chang.s in the landscape showed an increase in bare g.ound by 19.22%, open savannah by 16.8% whereas closed savanna decreased by 50%. Land use chang. matrix showed increasing.trends of bare g.ound at the expense of veg.tation. The integ.ated land use index hig.lig.ted the bare g.ound and built up areas rising.with a decreasing.closed veg.tation woodlot. Larg. farm size are shrinking.whiles majority of the people view mining.as the main socio economic activity affecting.the environment and the reduction in veg.tation. This study therefore provides a strateg.c g.ide and a baseline data for land use policy actors in the Northern belt of ghana. This will aid in developing.models for future land use chang. implications in surrounding.areas where mining.is on the rise.

Adoption and Impact of Modern Rice Varieties on Poverty in Eastern India

The factors affecting.the adoption of modern varieties(MVs) of rice and impact on poverty in Odisha, India were discussed. A total of 363 households from Cuttack and Sambalpur districts of Odisha via multistag. sampling.technique participated in the survey. The Crag.'s Double hurdle model was used to model the determinants of adoption and intensity of adoption of MVs of rice, and the propensity score matching.was used to analyze the impact of adoption on poverty. The results showed that ag., education, risk aversion, land size, yield, perception of MVs as hig. yielding. resistant to diseases and availability of MVs positively influenced the decision to adopt. However, variables such as household size, experience of a farmer, off-farm job participation, amount of credit received, cost of seeds, insecticides and fertilizers neg.tively influenced the adoption of MVs. Intensity of adoption of MVs was neg.tively influenced by experience of a farmer, cost of fertilizer and marketability of MVs, and positively affected by household size, risk aversion, land size, cost of insecticides, perception of MVs as hig. yielding.and availability of MV seeds. Poverty incidence, g.p and severity were hig. among.non-adopters to adopters of MVs. After matching.adopters and non-adopters of MV g.oups using.four different alg.rithms of nearest neig.bour matching. stratification matching. radius matching.and kernel matching. the impact of MV adoption resulted in hig.er per capita monthly household expenditure by about US$ 52.82 to US$ 63.17.

A g.od understanding.of the levels and distribution patterns of soil properties and/or quality indicators is a prerequisite for developing.sustainable ag.icultural land manag.ment prog.ams. Traditional assessments of these parameters of soil fertility status are somewhat costly, in both economics and time aspects. Different modelling.techniques have been proposed as a useful tool for determination of soil quality indicators and development of soil fertility maps, but to what extent these results are reliable remains under-quantified in many reg.ons worldwide. To address this uncertainty, Fuzzy-Analytical Hierarchy Process(Fuzzy-AHP) and Parametric analyses were conducted to ascertain the soil fertility status of a semiarid reg.on in the Northeast of Iran for some selected crops: alfalfa, corn silag., potato, sug.r beet, tomato and wheat. The Fuzzy-AHP and Parametric techniques using.soil suitability indices were estimated for each crop and each soil delineation was achieved by Ordinary Krig.ng. The Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution(TOPSIS) was used as a compensatory method to allow tradeoffs among.the selected criteria. Our results demonstrated that from the Fuzzy-AHP analysis, the soil fertility indices rang.d from moderate to hig. for production of alfalfa;from low to hig. for production of corn silag. and sug.r beet;moderate to hig. for production of potato and tomato;and from low to moderate for production of wheat. However, the parametric analysis showed soil fertility classes rang.ng.from very low to hig. for production of all the selected crops. Hig. correlations were also observed between soil fertility indices predicted by both models. Similarly, the capacities of both models to predict soil fertility status for production of the selected crops were also hig.ly correlated. The preference for the cultivation of the selected crops based on the Fuzzy-AHP analysis was sug.r beet > corn silag. > wheat > alfalfa > tomato > potato.
