Visual sig.als, including.chang.s in coloration and color patterns, are frequently used by animalsto convey information. During.contests, body coloration and its chang.s can be used to assess anopponent＇s state or motivation. Communication of ag.ressive propensity is particularly importantin g.oup-living.animals with a stable dominance hierarchy, as the outcome of ag.ressive inter-actions determines the social rank of g.oup members. Neolamprolog.s pulcher is a cooperativelybreeding.cichlid showing.frequent within-g.oup ag.ression. Both sexes exhibit two vertical blackstripes on the operculum that vary naturally in shape and darkness. During.frontal threat displaysthese patterns are actively exposed to the opponent, sug.esting.a sig.aling.function. To investi-g.te the role of operculum stripes during.contests we manipulated their darkness in computeranimated pictures of the fish. We recorded the responses in behavior and stripe darkness of testsubjects to which these animated pictures were presented. Individuals with initially darker stripeswere more ag.ressive ag.inst the animations and showed more operculum threat displays.Operculum stripes of test subjects became darker after exposure to an animation exhibiting.a paleoperculum than after exposure to a dark operculum animation, hig.lig.ting.the role of the dark-ness of this color pattern in opponent assessment. We conclude that （i） the black stripes on theoperculum of N. pulcherare a reliable sig.al of ag.ression and dominance, （ii） these marking. playan important role in opponent assessment, and （iii） 2D computer animations are well suited to elicitbiolog.cally meaning.ul short-term ag.ressive responses in this widely used model system ofsocial evolution.

Assig.ing.conservation value and identifying.hotspots of endemic rattan diversity in the Western g.ats, India

Rattans, or canes, are one of the most important non-timber forest products supporting.the livelihood of many forest-dwelling.communities in South and North-eastern India. Due to increased demand for rattan products, rattans have been extracted indiscriminately from the Western g.ats, a 1600-km mountain chain running.parallel to the west coast of India. Extensive harvesting. loss of habitat and poor reg.neration has resulted in dwindling.rattan populations, necessitating.an urg.nt attempt to conserve existing.rattan resources. In this study, using.niche-modelling.tools, an attempt has been made to identify areas of hig. species richness of rattans in the Western g.ats, one of the meg.-diversity reg.ons of the world. We have also developed conservation values for 21 economically important and endemic rattans of the Western g.ats. We identified at least two to three sites of extremely hig. species richness outside the existing.protected area network that should be prioritized for in situ conservation.This study emphasizes the need to develop strateg.es for the long.term conservation of rattans in the Western g.ats, India.

The structures assig.ed to all four members,1-4,of the recently reported favolasin class of natural product have been prepared for the first time by chemical synthesis.Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling.chemistry was used to establish the associated biaryl substructures.The key step used in preparing.the 1,5-benzodioxepin ring.system associated with compounds 3 and 4 was the acid-catalyzed 7-exo-tet cyclization of an appropriately substituted 2-(oxiran-2-ylmethoxy)phenol while a base-promoted 6-exo-tet cyclization of the same substrate was used to construct the 2,3-dihydrobenzo[b][1,4]dioxine core of targ.t 2.The spectral data derived from the four synthetically-produced favolasins matched those reported for the corresponding.natural products.Preliminary biolog.cal screening.of compounds 1-3 as well as a suite of fourteen precursors reveal that they display no notable anti-bacterial,anti-fung.l or anti-tumor activities but cong.ner K(4)is active,in the mM rang.,ag.inst Plasmodium falciparum.

The VEg. sig.aling.pathway in cancer: the road ahead

The vascular endothelial g.owth factor (VEg.) family of soluble protein g.owth factors consists of key mediators of ang.og.nesis and lymphang.og.nesis in the context of tumor biolog.. The members of the family, VEg.-A (also known as VEg.), VEg.-B, VEg.-C, VEg.-D, and placenta g.owth factor (Plg.), play important roles in vascular biolog. in both normal physiolog. and patholog.. The g.neration of a humanized neutralizing.antibody to VEg.-A (bevacizumab, also known as Avastin) and the demonstration of its benefit in numerous human cancers have confirmed the merit of an anti-ang.og.nesis approach to cancer treatment and have validated the VEg.-A sig.aling.pathway as a therapeutic targ.t. Other members of the VEg. family are now being.targ.ted, and their relevance to human cancer and the development of resistance to anti-VEg.-A treatment are being.evaluated in the clinic. Here, we discuss the potential of targ.ting.VEg. family members in the diag.osis and treatment of cancer.

Converg.nce and error bounds of adaptive filtering.under model structure and reg.essor uncertainties

Adaptive filtering.alg.rithms are investig.ted when system models are subject to model structure errors and reg.essor sig.al perturbations. System models for practical applications are often approximations of hig.-order or nonlinear systems, introducing.model structure uncertainties. Measurement and actuation errors cause sig.al perturbations, which in turn lead to uncertainties in reg.essors of adaptive filtering.alg.rithms. Employing.ordinary differential equation （ODE） methodolog.es, we show that converg.nce properties and estimation bias can be characterized by certain differential inclusions. Conditions to ensure alg.rithm converg.nce and bounds on estimation bias are derived. These finding. yield better understanding.of the robustness of adaptive alg.rithms ag.inst structural and sig.al uncertainties.

Effect of machining.parameters on edg.-chipping.during.drilling.of g.ass using.g.inding.aided electrochemical discharg. machining.（g.ECDM）

The problem of eliminating.edg.-chipping.at the entrance and exit of the hole while drilling.brittle materials is still a challeng.ng.task in different industries. g.inding. aided electrochemical discharg. machining.（g.ECDM） is a promising.technolog. for drilling.advanced hard-to-ma- chine ceramics, g.ass, composites, and other brittle mate- rials. Edg.-chipping.at the entrance of the hole can be fully eliminated by optimizing.the machining.parameters of g.ECDM. However, edg.-chipping.at the exit of the hole is difficult to eliminate during.the drilling.of ceramics and g.ass. This investig.tion sug.ests some practical ways to reduce edg.-chipping.at the exit of the hole. For this pur- pose, a three-dimensional finite element model was developed, and a coupled field analysis was conducted to study the effect of four parameters, i.e., cutting.depth, support leng.h, applied voltag., and pulse-on time, on the maximum normal stress in the reg.on where the edg.- chipping.initiates. The model is capable of predicting.the edg.-chipping.thickness, and the results predicted by the model are in close ag.eement with the experiment results. This investig.tion recommends the use of a low voltag. and low pulse-on time at the hole entrance and exit when applying.g.ECDM to reduce the edg.-chipping.thickness. Moreover, the use of a full rig.d support in the form of a base plate or sacrificial plate beneath the workpiece can postpone the initiation of chipping.by providing.support when the tool reaches the bottom layer of the workpiece, thereby reducing.the edg.-chipping.thickness.

A mathematical model for the evolution of solute concentrations in a hemodialysis filter

We consider the process of hemodialysis performed by means of a hollow fiber dialyzer with a special focus on the dynamics of the lig.t solutes (including.metabolic waste products) throug. the porous fibers membrane. The model we illustrate here completes the one formulated in a previous paper in which solutes concentrations in the dialyzate were neg.ected. Exploiting.the larg. difference between the characteristic time of the processes in the machine and the relaxation time to equilibrium in the body, we confine our study to the case of constant input data in order to emphasize the role of the solute transport mechanisms. Numerical solutions show that diffusion is dominant at the early stag. of filtration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Photon orbits and phase transition for Letelier AdS black holes immersed in perfect fluid dark matter

We obtain an exact solution for spherically symmetric Letelier AdS black holes immersed in perfect fluid dark matter (PFDM). Considering.the cosmolog.cal constant as the positive pressure of the system and volume as its conjug.te variable, we analyze the thermodynamics of our black holes in the extended phase space. Owing.to the backg.ound clouds of string. parameter (a) and the parameter endowed with PFDM (beta), we analyze the Hawking.temperature, entropy, and specific heat. Furthermore, we investig.te the relationship between the photon sphere radius and phase transition for the Letelier AdS black holes immersed in PFDM. Throug. the analysis, with a particular condition, non-monotonic behaviors are found between the photon sphere radius, impact parameter, PFDM parameter, temperature, and pressure. We can reg.rd the chang.s in both the photon sphere radius and impact parameter before and after phase transition as the order parameter; their critical exponents near the critical point are equal to the same value, 1/2, similar to that in ordinary thermal systems. This indicates that a universal relation of g.avity may exist near the critical point for a black hole thermodynamic system.
