CT diagnosis of recurrence after pancreatic cancer:Is there a pattern?

AIM:To investigate predilection sites of recurrence of pancreatic cancer by computed tomography(CT)in follow-up after surgery. METHODS:Seventy seven patients with recurrence after pancreatic cancer surgery were retrospectively *** operative technique,R-status,T-stage and development of tumor markers were evaluated. Two radiologists analyzed CT scans with consensus *** of local recurrence,lymph node recurrence and organ metastases were *** and progression of findings on follow-up CT were con-sidered as reference standard. RESULTS:The mean follow-up interval was 3.9± 1.8 mo,with a mean relapse-free interval of 12.9± 10.4 *** predominant site of recurrence was local (65%),followed by lymph node(17%),liver metastasis (11%)and peritoneal carcinosis(7%).Local recurrence emerged at the superior mesenteric artery(n=28),the hepatic artery(n=8),in an area defined by the surrounding vessels:celiac trunk,portal vein,inferior vena cava(n=22),and in a space limited by the mesenteric artery,portal vein and inferior vena cava(n=17). Lymph node recurrence occurred in the mesenteric root and left lateral to the *** was confirmed by surgery(n=22)and follow-up CT(n=55).Tumor markers[carbohydrate antigen 19-9(CA19-9),carcinoembryonic antigen(CEA)]increased in accordance with signs of recurrence in most cases(86%CA19-9;79.2% CEA). CONCLUSION:Specific changes of local and lymph node recurrence can be found in the course of the cardinal peripancreatic *** superior mesenteric artery is the leading structure for recurrence.

For number concentration measurements of superfine particles a condensation nucleus counter （CNC） is frequently used. The combination of a new CNC module with a white light aerosol spectrometer and a passive collector makes possible accurate time-resolved determination of particle number within the overall size range of 10 nm to 40 μm and at concentrations up to 10^5 particles/cm^3. With the aerosol spectrometer a high time-resolved particle size determination is also possible in the size range of 0.3-40 μm up to the same high number concentrations of 10^5 particles/cm^3.

The introduction of transjugular intrahepatic portalsystemic stent-shunt （TIPSS） has been a major breakthrough in the treatment of portal hypertension, which has evolved to a large extent, into a routine procedure. A 21-year-old male patient with progressive graft fibrosis/cirrhosis requiring TIPSS for variceal hemorrhage in the esophagus due to portal hypertension was unresponsive to conventional measures two years after living related liver transplantation （LDLT）. Subsequently, variceal hemorrhage was controlled, however, liver function decreased dramatically with consecutive multi organ failure. CT scan revealed substantial necrosis in the liver. The patient underwent successful ＂high urgent＂ cadaveric liver transplantation and was discharged on postoperative d 20 in a stable condition.

Prediction of the Enhanced Out-of-Plane Thermal Conductivity of Carbon Fiber Composites Produced by VARTM

The thermal conductivity of epoxy resin can be increased by a factor of eight to ten by loading with highly conductive particles. However, higher loadings increase the viscosity of the resin and hamper its use for liquid composite molding processes. Thus, the enhancement of the out-of-plane thermal conductivity of carbon composites manufactured by VARTM and accomplished by matrix filling is limited to about 250%. In order to derive higher increases in out-of-plane thermal conductivity, additional measures have to be taken. These consist of introducing thermally conductive fibers in out-of-plane direction of the preform using a 3D-weaving process. Measured out-of-plane thermal conductivities of 3D-woven fabric composites are significantly increased compared to a typical laminated composite. It has been shown that if introducing highly conductive z-fibers, the use of a particle filled resin is not necessary and furthermore should be avoided due to the manufacturing problems mentioned above. An existing analytical model was altered to predict the effective thermal conductivity as a function of the composite material properties such as the thermal conductivities and volume contents of fibers in in-plane and out-of-plane directions, the thermal conductivity of the loaded resin, the grid-density of the out- of-plane fibers, and material properties of the contacting material. The predicted results are compared with measured data of manufactured samples.

Impact of Chain Length of Saturated Fatty Acids during Their Heterogeneously Catalyzed Deoxygenation

Fatty acids with different chain length were deoxygenated in the absence of hydrogen (caprylic acid (CA), lauric acid (LA) and stearic acid (SA)). The catalytic tests were carried over Pd-containing catalysts out in a batch reactor under inert gas for 6 h at 250°C to 350°C and pressures from 18 to 75 bar in the absence of additionally fed hydrogen. Pd-containing catalysts were tested;the best performing catalyst was 10% Pd/C with 63% undecane yield at 327°C. These catalysts were used for a comparative decarboxylation of CA, LA and SA. At equal reaction conditions (300°C, 6 h), the chain length of the fatty acid had a strong impact on the conversion, which was steadily increasing, whereas the alkane selectivity ran through a maximum. This work demonstrated the usability of Pd-containing catalysts for the decarboxylation of various fatty acids in the absence of additionally fed hydrogen with respect to the manufacture of hydrocarbons that can be used as blending components for fuels.

In many gaseous multi-phase systems,like in the atmosphere,in exhaust gases etc.,there are particles which are too small to be measured directly by conventional detection mechanisms with regard to their number and to their *** temporally resolved detection of these parameters is however important because the particle size and particle number can have a substantial influence on the health *** the breathing air,or they may affect the efficiency and the lifetime of filters *** technology. To measure the number of small particles within the range of 5 nm to 1 μm condensation nucleus counters,so called CNCs,are *** CNCs are developed usually for laboratory measurements and are sensitive in relation to fluctuations of the temperature and of the air pressure in the atmosphere. The combination of a new condensation module,the CNC-04,with the white light aerosol spectrometer welas and the passive collector Sigma-2 makes possible an almost accurate time-resolved determination of the particle number within the range of approx.10 nm to 40 μm. With the welas-system a temporally high-resolved particle size determination is possible in the ranges 0,3-17 μm or 0.7-40 μm also in high concentrations up to 10 particles/cm. Due to the combination of the welas with the new CNC-04 module,the number of smallest particles down to 10 nm can,for the first time,be accurately determined with a counting procedure also in concentrations up to 10 particles/***,the new device combination is suitable particularly for measurements in the outside air, the more so as the number concentration of atmospheric particles＜100 nm can increase easily up to 10 particles/cm. Since for the high-resolved size and quantity determination of particles＞0.3 μm one uses the same device as for the counting of the up-condensed smaller particles,both measurements are identical concerning the counting ***,the measurement results can be clearly combined computationally. Artificially constructed van der Waals heterostructures(vdWHs)provide an ideal platform for realizing emerging quantum phenomena in condensed matter *** methods for building vdWHs have been developed:stacking two-dimensional(2D)materials into a bilayer structure with different lattice constants,or with different *** interlayer coupling stemming from commensurate or incommensurate superlattice pattern plays an important role in vdWHs for modulating the band structures and generating new electronic *** this article,we review a series of novel quantum states discovered in two model vdWH systems—graphene/hexagonal boron nitride(hBN)hetero-bilayer and twisted bilayer graphene(tBLg),and discuss how the electronic structures are modified by such stacking and *** also provide perspectives for future studies on hetero-bilayer materials,from which an expansion of 2D material phase library is expected.
