In this paper, we examined the detailed morphology of two strains of Prorocentrum isolated from the coastal waters of Zhejiang (Wenling area), China, and Masan Bay of Korea. A taxonomic comparison was made among strains on the basis of morphological and molecular data. The cellular dimensions of the Chinese Wenling strain (LAMB090508) and Korean strain (PDKS0206) were similar and the cells of both strains were of asymmetric and elongated shape. The posterior end of most cells was rounded. Megacytic zones of aged cells were broader with dense tiny knobs. The roundish nucleus was located in the posterior part of the cell. A few irregular shaped chloroplasts were distributed within the cell. The nucleotide similarity of the two strains, determined from the 5.8S rDNA-ITS sequences, was 99.83%. The comparative results of morphology and molecular analysis suggest that both strains isolated from China and Korea were the identical species, Prorocentrum donghaiense Lu.

Harmful algal blooms often occurred in the East China Sea （ECS） and the german coastal waters of the North Sea but Karlodinium veneficum had not been taxonomically reported. Two strains of Karlodinium （LAMB090611 and LAMB010601） were isolated from the two areas in 2009. The morphological characteristics and molecular phylogeny of two strains are compared on the basis of observation of a light microscope, a scanning electron microscope （SEM）, a laser scanning micro-scope （LSM） and an internal transcribed spacer （ITS） sequence data. The mean cell length of strain LAMB090611 is （14.2 ± 1.8） μm （range 11.1–18.7 μm） and mean width is （10.8 ± 1.5） μm （range 8.2– 14.7 μm）. The mean cell length of strain LAMB010601 is （15.1 ± 1.2） μm （range 12.7–17.9 μm） and the mean width is （11.4 ± 1.1） μm （range 9.1–14.7 μm）, respectively. The two strains are similar in morphological characteristics, including a straight apical groove, distinct ventral pore, sulcal extension, cingulum displacement, two or four irregular shaped chloroplasts within the cell and almost equal sized epicone and hypocone. The large and round nucleus is located at the center or at the hypocone of the cell. The sequence length of the ECS strain LAMB090611 and the german strain LAMB010601 is 640 and 646 bp, respectively. The gC content is 49%. The nucleotide similarity of the two strains is 98.1%. The sequence divergence is 0.003. Both strains are confirmed as Karlo-dinium veneficum （D. Ballantine） J. Larsen and this is the first taxonomic report from China and germany coastal waters. The population dynamics of this toxic species in the ECS and german coastal waters needs to be investigated in the near future.

AIM:To assess the appropriateness of the indication and route of administration of proton-pump-inhibitors (PPIs) and their associated cost impact. METHODS:Data collection was performed prospec-tively during a 6-mo period on 340 patients who re-ceived omeprazole intravenously during their hospital stay in non-intensive care floors. Updated guidelines were used to assess the appropriateness of the indication and route of administration. RESULTS:Complete data collection was available for 286 patients which were used to assess intravenous (IV) PPIs utilization. Around 88% of patients were receiving PPIs for claimed stress ulcer prophylaxis (SUP) indication; of which,only 17% met the guideline criteria for SUP indication,14% met the criteria for non-steroidal-anti-inflammatory drugs-induced ulcer prophylaxis,while the remaining 69% were identifi ed as having an unjustified indication for PPI use. Theinitiation of IV PPIs was appropriate in 55% of pa-tients. Half of these patients were candidates for switching to the oral dosage form during their hos-pitalization,while only 36.7% of these patients were actually switched. The inappropriate initiation of PPIs via the IV route was more likely to take place on the medical floor than the surgical floor (53% vs 36%,P = 0.003). The cost analysis associated with the appro-priateness of the indication for PPI use as well as the route of administration of PPI revealed a possible saving of up to $17 732.5 and $14 571,respectively. CONCLUSION:This study highlights the over-utili-zation of IV PPIs in non-intensive care unit patients. Restriction of IV PPI use for justified indications and route of administration is recommended.

AIM: To investigate the influence of proton pump inhibitors(PPIs) exposure on the diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) gastritis and intestinal ***: Chronic PPI use is associated with masking of H. pylori infection. Patients with H. pylori infection are predisposed to gastric and duodenal ulcers, and long-term infection with this organism has been associated with gastric mucosal atrophy and serious long-term complications, such as gastric lymphoma and adenocarcinoma. Three hundred patients diagnosed with gastritis between January 2008 and April 2010 were included in our study. The computerized medical database of these patients was reviewed retrospectively in order to assess whether the type of gastritis diagnosed(H. pylori vs non-H. pylori gastritis) is influenced by PPI exposure. H. pylori density was graded as low, if corresponding to mild density following the Updated Sydney System, or high, if corresponding to moderate or severe densities in the Updated Sydney ***: Patients were equally distributed between males and females with a median age at the time of diagnosis of 50 years old(range: 20-87). The histological types of gastritis were classified as H. pylori gastritis(n = 156, 52%) and non-H. pylori gastritis(n = 144, 48%). All patients with non-H. pylori gastritis had inactive chronic gastritis. Patients with no previous PPI exposure were more likely to be diagnosed with H. pylori gastritis than those with previous PPI exposure(71% vs 34.2%, P gERD(OR = 0.317, 95%CI: 0.132-0.763, P = 0.01), alcohol intake(OR = 0.396, 95%CI: 0.195-0.804, P = 0.01), the detection of H. pylori was less likely. The development of photocatalytic technology has grown significantly since its initial report and as such,a number of screening methods have been developed to assess activity. In the field of environmental remediation, a crucial factor is the formation of highly oxidising species such as OH radicals. These radicals are often the primary driving force for the removal and breakdown of organic and inorganic contaminants. The quantification of such compounds is challenging due to the nature of the radical,however indirect methods which deploy a chemical probe to essentially capture the radical have been shown to be effective. As discussed in the work presented here, optimisation of such a method is fundamental to the efficiency of the method. A starting concentration range of coumarin from 50 mmol/L to 1000 mmol/L was used along with a catalyst loading of 0.01 g/L to 1 g/L Ti TiO2 to identify that 250 mmol/L and 0.5 g/L Ti TiO2 were the optimum conditions for production. Under these parameters a maximum production rate of 35.91 mmol/L（Rmax= 0.4 mmol/L OH＊ min-1） was achieved which yielded at photonic efficiency of 4.88 OH＊moles photon-1 under UV irradiation. The data set presented also highlighted the limitations which are associated with the method which included; rapid exhaustion of the probe molecule and process inhibition through UV light saturation. Identifying both the optimum conditions and the potential limitations of the process were concluded to be key for the efficient deployment of the photocatalytic screening method.

Climate change is occurring and insects are responding. Current challenges for ecologists and managers are predicting how organisms will respond to continuing climate change and determining how to mitigate potential negative effects. In contrast to broad scale predictions for climate change involving the distribution of species, in this article we highlight the many ways in which local populations of the Rocky Mountain Apollo butterfly （Parnassius smintheus Doubleday） are predicted to respond to climate change. Using experimental and observational data collected over the past 15 years, we detail both direct and indirect effects. In addition, we identify limitations in our knowledge restricting the ability to predict how populations will respond to climate change. Some changes, such as warmer winter temperatures, may have beneficial effects; however, most of the effects of climate change will be detrimental. Variability in snow cover during the overwintering period and habitat loss due to forest encroachment have the largest potential negative effects.

AIM：To survey ophthalmologists（who have participated previously in clinical research） and ophthalmic industry professionals（who have been involved in ocular research and development） to indicate perceived needs for new pharmaceuticals in various ophthalmic ***：A prospective,industry-based survey was sent to ophthalmologists and ophthalmic industry professionals about the perceived needs for new pharmaceutical ***：This survey was sent to 559 ophthalmic pharma professionals and *** received 82（15%） *** results showed that the most commonly perceived need for new pharmaceuticals were dry and wet age-related macular degeneration,glaucoma,diabetic macular edema and dry *** was a statistical difference found between response groups（P〈0.0001）.Respondents indicated they would express their commitment to a new product they perceived as needed by recommending to colleagues（63%）,prescribing（60%）,participating as principle investigator in a related clinical trial（52%）,advising the company（52%）,lecturing on behalf of the product（43%）,investing in the product（38%）,taking no action（7%） or obtain a position in the company（1%）.CONCLUSION：Ophthalmic pharma professionals and ophthalmologists perceive the greatest need for new medicines in ophthalmology to be in dry and wet agerelated macular degeneration,glaucoma,diabetic macular edema and dry eye.

A new planktonic dinoflagellate, Prorocentrum donghaiense Lu sp. nov., is described in the present paper. The water sample was collected from the Changjiang Estuary, the East China Sea. The species identification is based on shape, size, surface micro morphology, ornamentation of thecal plates and the architecture of the periflagellar area and the intercalary bands as seen by light and scanning electron microscope. Prorocentrum donghaiense Lu sp. nov. is compared with other prorocentrum species with respect to morphological characteristics and bloom behavior. It is not known whether Prorocentrum donghaiense Lu sp. nov produces phycotoxins like some other Prorocentrum species. Four other red tide species in the family Prorocentraceae (Dinophyceae), namely P. balticum , P. minimum, P. micans, P. triestinum , were examined and identified by light and scanning electron microscope. They have been recorded as bloom forming species. Some aggregates of Prorocentrum are observed at the end of blooms. An event of strong discoloration caused by P. donghaiense could be detected by satellite sensor in the East China Sea in the late spring of 1995.
