Are Acute Phase Reactants and CA125 Useful for Pregnancy Prediction in Frozen Embryo Transfer?

Objective: This study assessed blood C-reactive protein (CRP), fibrinogen, procalcitonin, and CA125 levels and determined whether they have an effect on pregnancy. Material & Methods: Between Feb. and Sep. 2018, 50 consecutive women who had their first frozen embryo transfer at a tertiary referral IVF center in Turkey were included in the study. Serum samples were collected on the second day of the cycle and on the transfer day. The women were divided into two groups based on the results of pregnancy outcome: pregnant (group 1) and non-pregnant (group 2). Blood CRP, fibrinogen, procalcitonin, and CA125 levels were compared between the groups. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between the groups according to CA125, CRP, fibrinogen, and procalcitonin levels at the beginning of the cycle and on the transfer day. In comparison with levels at the beginning of the cycle and on the transfer day, fibrinogen and CRP were significantly higher on the transfer day than at the beginning of the cycle. Procalcitonin was significantly higher on the transfer day than at the beginning of the cycle in group 1. However, there was no statistically significant difference between the transfer day and the beginning of the cycle in group 2. Conclusions: However, the fibrinogen, CRP and procalcitonin levels were significantly higher on the transfer day than at the beginning of the cycle. The results indicated that acute phase reactants or CA125 should not be used to determine the time of embryo transfer or predict pregnancy.

Remote Cerebellar Hemorrhage after Frontal Lobectomy: Zebra Sign

Remote cerebellar hemorrhages (RCHs) are rare complications of intracranial or spinal interventions. We describe a patient with an RCH that occurred after a frontal lobectomy for an intracranial tumor. A 41-year-old female patient with a headache and partial seizures underwent a right frontal lobectomy upon detection of a right frontal mass. An RCH (zebra sign) was detected on a control cranial computed tomography (CT), which was performed upon detection of frontal lobe syndrome and mild ataxia in the patient postoperatively. Although the mechanism underlying the occurrence of RCHs after intracranial procedures is not clear, they have been attributed to an imbalance between intravascular pressure and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) due to rapid drainage of the fluid, causing bleeding in the cerebellar parenchyma. generally, bilateral superior cerebellar injury produces parallel flat hyperdense areas known as the zebra sign on CT. The prognosis of a cerebellar hemorrhage is generally good, and it can be treated with a conservative approach. Controlled drainage of CSF during surgery and selecting an appropriate surgical position perioperatively will reduce the risk of RCHs.

Mature Placental Teratoma: Case Report

Placental teratoma is a very rare tumor. The tumor we present that lay between amnion and chorion contained disorganized skin and its appendages, bone, cartilage, and fat. There was no evidence of recognizable umblical cord. Our diagnosis was “mature teratoma of the placenta”. The distinction between teratoma and fetus acardius amorphus, besides the possible origin of a tumor in this site, is discussed with a brief of literature.

Striae gravidarum as a predictor of spontaneous preterm delivery: A case control study

Background/Aims: The association between striae gravidarum (Sg) and preterm delivery may be postulated because of sharing similar poor organization of extracellular matrix in both skin and cervix. Our goal was to compare the frequency of striae gravidarum in women who gave preterm birth and women who gave term birth. Methods: A case-control study was conducted in women who gave preterm birth (n = 66) and age matched women who gave term birth (n = 68). Cases and controls were recruited from puerperal women consequently seen at delivery wards of perinatology unit. All women underwent dermatologic examination in terms of Sg blindly to theirs gestational weeks of delivery. The frequency of Sg was compared in all groups. Results: The frequency of Sg was 63.6% in women with preterm birth and 54.4% in women with term birth (p = 0.278). Sg is five times more common in late preterm group than in women with term group, but this difference was not statistically significant [(p = 0.227, OR: 5.02, CI 95% (0.5 - 44.0)]. The rate of preventive cream usage was not statistically different in women with Sg and without Sg (p = 0.245). Conclusions: It seems that there was no statistically significant association between the risk of preterm labor and the presence of striae gravidarum. Larger prospective observational studies are needed to state expressly the probable clinical association between the presence of Sg and preterm delivery.

Cost effective filamentous phage based immunization nanoparticles displaying a full-length hepatitis B virus surface antigen

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is one of the major causes of chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and liver cancer. In combating HBV infections, HBV diagnosis and vaccination are therefore critical. The hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg) is a key target molecule in developing vaccines and diagnostic systems. To date, although HBsAg has been expressed in bacteria, yeasts and mammalian cells, there are still limitations in the existing ones, which leave the necessity for searching new HBsAg production methods. In this study, a simple phage display-based method was developed to produce the purified full-length HBsAg molecules for further immunization studies. For this purpose, the HBsAg coding gene was cloned into a pCANTAB5E phagemid vector and expressed on the surface of M13 filamentous phages. The HBsAg-expressing phage nanosystem was then used as immunization agent in BALB/cJ mice. The ELISA results for sera obtained from mice immunized with HBsAg-displaying phage particles revealed an immune response against HBsAg. These results demonstrate the potential use of a full-length antigen to be displayed on phages as cost effective adjuvant-free immunization agents as an alternative to the highly purified and more expensive antigens conjugated with carrier molecules.

Exploring adoption of augmented reality smart glasses： Applications in the medical industry

This study explores the use of augmented reality smart glasses(ARSgs) by physicians and their adoption of these products in the Turkish medical *** glass was used as a demonstrative example for the introduction of ARSgs. We proposed an exploratory model based on the technology acceptance model by Davis. Exogenous factors in the model were defined by performing semi-structured in-depth interviews, along with the use of an expert panel in addition to the technology adoption literature. The framework was tested by means of a field study, data was collected via an Internet survey, and path analysis was used. The results indicate that there were a number of factors to be considered in order to understand ARSg adoption by *** was influenced by ease of use, compatibility,ease of reminding, and speech recognition, while ease of use was affected by ease of learning, ease of medical education, external influence, and privacy. Privacy was the only negative factor that reduced the perceived ease of use,and was found to indirectly create a negative *** emerged as the most significant external factor for usefulness. Developers of ARSgs should pay attention to healthcare-specific requirements for improved utilization and more extensive adoption of ARSgs in healthcare settings. In particular, they should focus on how to increase the compatibility of ARSgs. Further research needs to be conducted to explain the adoption intention of physicians.

<i>Mycobacterium vaccae</i>Immunization to Pregnant BALB/c Mice Ameliorated Lung Histopathology and Bone Marrow Eosinophila in Ovalbumin Sensitized Offsprings

Context: One of the treatment strategies for atopic diseases is to skew immune response away from Th2 dominance by using Mycobacterial strains. Objective: We wanted to find out whether M. vaccae administration to pregnant mice had any preventive effect on the offsprings in the development of a murine asthma model. Materials and Methods: Pregnant BALB/c mice were divided into two groups;first group received heat-killed M. vaccae subcutaneously on 12th day of pregnancy and the latter group received PBS. After delivery, newborn mice of each group were further divided into two subgroups as M. vaccae/Ovalbumin (OVA), M. vaccae/control, PBS/OVA and PBS/ control. To establish experimental murine asthma model, mice were intraperitoneally sensitized and challenged intratracheally with Ovalbumin. We analysed airway histopathology, bone marrow eosinophil progenitors and splenic cell cytokine profiles of the offsprings. Results: Comparison of offsprings in M. vaccae/OVA group were not different than PBS controls with respect to thicknesses of airway epithelium, basement membrane, subepithelial smooth muscles and number of hyperplasic goblet cells as well as bronchial associated lymphoid tissue density and eosinophil progenitors in the bone marrow. Comparison of M. vaccae/OVA group to asthma model revealed significant differences and lower levels of OVA-induced IL-5. Conclusions: We propose that immunization of pregnant BALB/c with M. vaccae could prevent histopathological alterations in the airways related to the asthma model and down-regulates IL-5 secretion from splenocytes of offsprings.

The Prediction of Propagation Loss of FM Radio Station Using Artificial Neural Network

In order to calculate the propagation loss of electromagnetic waves produced by a transmitter, a variety of models based on empirical and deterministic formulas are used. In this study, one of the artificial neural networks models, Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm, which is quite effective for predicting the propagation is used and the results obtained by this algorithm are compared with the simulation results based on ITU-R 1546 and Epstein-Peterson models. In this paper, the propagation loss of FM radio station using artificial neural networks models is studied depending on the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. For training the artificial neural network, as the input data;range (r), effective antenna height (h) and terrain irregularity (△H) parameters are involved and measured values are treated as the output data. The good results obtained in the city area reveal that the artificial neural network is a very efficient method to compute models which integrate theoretical and experimental data. Meanwhile, the results show that an ANN model performs very well compared with theoretical and empiric propagation models with regard to prediction accuracy, complexity, and prediction time. By comparing the results, the RMSE for Neural Network Model using Levenberg-Marquardt is 9.57, and it is lower than that of classical propagation model using Epstein-Peterson for which RMSE is 10.26.
