OBJECTiVE: To estimate the effectiveness of paracervical block in controlling p.i. among women treated with manual vacuum aspiration for an incomplete abortion METHODS: A randomized clinical trial was conducted at Nuestra Senora de Altagracia, a maternal and perinatal referral hospital in the Dominican Republic The sample size was based on a clinical difference of 1.5 p.i.ts in the level of p.i. measured with the visual analog scale using 90%power and a samp.i.g error of 0.04. Women who were at 12 weeks of gestation or less with an incomplete abortion were eligible to participate. They were randomly assigned to receive either the standard treatment of care (manual vacuum aspiration for uterine evacuation with psychological support but no paracervical block) or manual vacuum aspiration treatment with psychological support and paracervical block using 1.0%lidocaine. patients with active infections, severe illnesses, psychiatric disorders, or allergies to lidocaine were excluded. intraoperative p.i. as reported by the women and as documented by an external observer was measured. RESULTS: Although Ae paracervical block technique used showed a slight reduction in severe p.i., there were no clinically or statistically significant differences in intraoperative p.i. between the 2 groups (relative risk 0.73; 95%confidence interval 0.43, 1.23) with 50%of all patients registering 7 or higher score on a visual analog p.i. scale of 0-10. However, statistically significant differences were found in each group when comparing the level of preoperative and intraoperative p.i. described by the patient (p piration technique and the paracervical Hock were not accompanied by comp.i.ations. CONCLUSiON: The paracervical block technique used in this study along with psychological support was comparable with p.i. control using psychological support alone; neither p.i. management regimen provided sufficient p.i. control. it is recommended that randomized comparat

Arctic sea-ice extent: No record minimum in 2023 or recent years

Arctic sea-ice extent reaches its minimum each year in September. On 11 September 2023 the minimum was 4.969 million square kilometers(***^(2)). This was not a record low, which occurred in 2012, when the minimum was 4.175 ***^(2), 0.794 ***^(2) less than the minimum in 2023. However, the ice extent had decreased by 0.432 ***^(2) compared with 2022. Nevertheless, the summer melting in 2023 was remarkably less than expected when considering the strong heat waves in the atmosphere and ocean, with record temperatures set around the world. in general, there is a high correlation between the long-term decrease in sea-ice extent and the increasing CO_(2) in the atmosphere, where the increase of CO_(2) in recent decades explains about 80% of the decrease in sea ice in September, while the remainder is caused by natural variability.

This paper describes severe plastic deformation(SpD)procedures,which are utilized to form an ultrafine-grained structure in metallic *** the SpD process,a solid material sample is subjected to very high loads without a significant change in sample *** the present work,the high-pressure torsion(HpT)process,as one of the SpD techniques,which achieves a high degree of deformation and ensures refinement of the microstructure,will be discussed in more *** that grain size control is accepted as a method to obtain materials with desired characteristics,an overview of the properties of ultrafine-grained titanium-based biomaterials to be used in medicine is ***,particular attention is dedicated to the influences of HpT process parameters,p.i.arily hydrostatic pressure,and number of revolutions during torsion,on the grain size and physical and mechanical characteristics(modulus of elasticity,microhardness,and tensile properties),corrosion resistance,and biocompatibility of the titanium-based biomaterials.A review of the literature indicates that titanium-based materials obtained by the SpD process show improved mechanical and physical properties without losing biocompatibility and corrosion resistance,which suggests that these methods of obtaining implants are something that should be further developed in the future.

Lessons from international Students’ Reaction to the 2011 great East Japan Earthquake:The Case of the School of Engineering at Tohoku University

The objective of this study is to document the reaction of international students to the 11 March 2011 emergency in order to inform and improve disaster management strategies, both public and institutional. The study is based mainly on a questionnaire survey carried out in August 2011 and follow-up.i.terviews with students and other stakeholders. it describes the background of Tohoku University’s School of Engineering and covers six different stages in the evolution of the emergency:(1) immediate response;(2) taking shelter in Sendai;(3) life in the city during the aftermath;(4) sheltering outside Sendai;(5) coming back;plus(6) an overview of the experience. Major findings include: the process of evacuation and safety confirmation was successful, yet the subsequent phases(2 and 3) went on mostly unmanaged;students relied mostly on secondary sources of information to make decisions, mainly family and friends of the same nationality, most of whom probably were not better informed than the students themselves. Based on the findings, suggestions for future disaster planning are advanced, as well as a discussion on the challenges of information provision during crisis.

Bianchi type i in f(T) gravitational theories

A tetrad field that is homogeneous and anisotropic which contains two unknown functions A（t） and B（t） of cosmic time is app.i.d to the field equations of f（T）, where T is the torsion scalar, T = T~μ_（νρ）S_μ^（νρ）. We calculate the equation of continuity and rewrite it as a product of two brackets, the first is a function of f（T） and the second is a function of the two unknowns A（t） and B（t）. We use two different relations between the two unknown functions A（t） and B（t） in the second bracket to solve it. Both of these relations give constant scalar torsion and solutions coincide with the de Sitter one. So,another assump.i.n related to the contents of the matter fields is postulated. This assump.i.n enables us to drive a solution with a non-constant value of the scalar torsion and a form of f（T） which represents ΛCDM.

Natural products:perspectives in the pharmacological treatment of gastrointestinal anisakiasis

Objective: To evaluate the activity of different natural products against L3 larvae of Anisakis type i. Methods: information on investigations into the activity of natural products against the L3 larvae of Anisakis simplex was collected from scientific journals, books, theses and reports via a library and electronic search(using pubmed, Scopus, Medline, Web of Science and Science Direct). The search terms included: natural products, medicinal plants, essential oils, terpenic derivatives, Anisakis, antinematodal activity. Results: in the literature reviewed numerous papers were found concerning the in vitro and in vivo activity against Anisakis type i of various natural products(plant extracts, essential oils and their major components). Analysis of the results showed that in vitro tests the Melaleuca alternifolia essential oil and the ar-turmerone isolated from Curcuma longa displayed the greatest activity. in vivo, the most active compound was perillaldehyde, the main component of perilla frutescens essential oil. Conclusions: This study shows that some natural products exhibited promising antianisakis properties.

into the life and death: RecA a WiSE factor working to integrate survival and evolution in <i>Escherichia coli</i>

Escherichia coli RecA has been considered traditionally a cellular protein with multiple vital functions working to ensure the maintenance of integrity of genome in each individual bacterial cell as well as promoting swarming migration in collectivity. On the contrary, recently it has been described that RecA promotes cellular apoptotic-like death (ALD), a pathway of programmed cellular death (pCD). in fact, RecA has been dubbed as the major apoptotic executor in E. coli. From these studies, RecA emerges as a prototypical gin/gan protein that despite of their intrinsic vital and lethal anfi-funcionality becomes in a WiSE factor: a Worker to integrate Survival and Evolution in E. coli evolving populations living in community. Here, i provide a review of recent experimental and conceptual advances trying to understand these RecA’s antagonistic roles in appearance contradictory under a unified biological vision.

Stem cell therapy in inflammatory bowel disease: A promising therapeutic strategy?

inflammatory bowel diseases are inflammatory, chronic and progressive diseases of the intestinal tract for which no curative treatment is available. Research in other fields with stem cells of different sources and with immunoregulatory cells(regulatory T-lymphocytes and dendritic T-cells) opens up new expectations for their use in these diseases. The goal for stem cell-based therapy is to provide a permanent cure. To achieve this, it will be necessary to obtain a cellular product, original or genetically modified, that has a high migration capacity and homes into the intestine, has high survival after transplantation, regulates the immune reaction while not being visible to the patient's immune system, and rep.i.s the injured tissue.

A Novel Cellular Autoaggregative Developmentally CRp Regulated Behaviour generates Massively Chondrule-Like Formations over Surface of Old <i>Escherichia coli</i>K-12 Macrocolony Biofilms

How Escherichia coli bacteria develop a particular colonial, 3-D biofilm morphological pattern is still a poorly understood process. Recently, we reported a new E. coli K-12 morphotype exhibited by old macrocolonies described as volcano-like. The formative developmental process of this morphotype has been presented as a suitable experimental model for the study of 3D patterning in macrocolony biofilms. Here, we report the op.i.al microscopy observations and genetic analysis that have unveiled the existence of a novel autoaggregative behaviour which generates massive lumpiness over the surface of the volcano-like macrocolonies. These lumpy formations are generated by the autoaggregation and strong interaction of tightly packed bacterial cells in structures with a chondrule-like appearance which give the colony’s surface its characteristic microscopic lumpy phenotype. Furthermore, they exhibit different levels of maturation from the edge to the center of the colony. Hence, its generation appears to follow a spatiotemporal program of development during the macrocolony’s morphogenesis. interestingly, the agar’s hardness influences the morphology exhibited by these formations, with high agar concentration (1.5%, 15 g/L) suppressing its development. This new auto-aggregative E. coli’s behaviour does not require the activity of the biofilm master regulator CsgD, the adhesiveness of flagella, pili type 1, adhesin Ag43, β-1,6-N-acetyl-D-glucosamine polymer-pgA, cellulose or colanic acid, but it is under glucose repression and the control of cAMp receptor protein (CRp). The possible physiological role of these chondrule-like formations in the adaptability of the colony to different stressful environmental conditions is discussed.
