Appraising trapping efficiency of vegetative barriers in agricultural landscapes:Strategy based on a probabilistic approach based on a review of available information

Vegetative barriers have proven their effectiveness in controlling water erosion and enhancing other ecosystem services in agricultural *** characteristic has led to the conservation and promotion of vegetative barriers as landscape elements by the Common Agricultural Policy and other policy *** reviews have dealt with the trapping efficiency of vegetated barriers,although they usually focus on studies from humid climates where their implantation and survival are more ***,vegetated barriers are also an attractive alternative in arid and semi-arid *** limit competition for water and nutrients with crops to a reduced area compared to other best management practices,such as cover *** study presents a review of trapping efficiency of sediment,runoff,and nutrients(P and N)by vegetative barriers in regions of humid and arid,and semi-arid,climates,and a strategy based on sediment trapping efficiency probability,which in turn is based on the results obtained from our *** types of independent variables were grouped and identified for the review:related to the vegetative barrier dimension(buffer width,slope of the plot,and buffer area ratio),and related to the experimental conditions(type of vegetation in the buffer,soil protection of the non-buffered area,type of climate,type of experimental measurement and origin of rainfall).An explor-atory analysis evaluated the significance of the experimental variables,which identified the need to focus on experiments under natural rainfall since those carried out with simulated rainfall presented statis-tically significant *** general,average trapping efficiencies for runoff and sediment were 40.1 and 62.6%,*** nutrients,values of trapping efficiencies had an average of 44.9%for phosphorus and 38.4%for *** and sediment trapping efficiency in arid and semi-arid re-gions tended to be higher than in humid *** dimensional

Single-model uncertainty quantification in neural network potentials does not consistently outperform model ensembles

Neural networks(NNs)often assign high confidence to their predictions,even for points far out of distribution,making uncertainty quantification(UQ)a *** they are employed to model interatomic potentials in materials systems,this problem leads to unphysical structures that disrupt simulations,or to biased statistics and dynamics that do not reflect the true *** UQ techniques can find new informative data and drive active learning loops for robust ***,a variety of UQ techniques,including newly developed ones,exist for atomistic simulations and there are no clear guidelines for which are most effective or suitable for a given *** this work,we examine multiple UQ schemes for improving the robustness of NN interatomic potentials(NNIPs)through active *** particular,we compare incumbent ensemble-based methods against strategies that use single,deterministic NNs:mean-variance estimation(MVE),deep evidential regression,and gaussian mixture models(gMM).We explore three datasets ranging from in-domain interpolative learning to more extrapolative out-of-domain generalization challenges:rMD17,ammonia inversion,and bulk silica *** is measured across multiple metrics relating model error to *** experiments show that none of the methods consistently outperformed each other across the various *** remained better at generalization and for NNIP robustness;MVE only proved effective for in-domain interpolation,while gMM was better out-of-domain;and evidential regression,despite its promise,was not the preferable alternative in any of the *** broadly,cost-effective,single deterministic models cannot yet consistently match or outperform ensembling for uncertainty quantification in NNIPs.

In this work,we intend to perform a detailed study on the crystallization process of PZT 53/47 nanostructured powders by starting out with an amorphous precursor synthesized by a sol-gel based *** interests also lie in the feasibility for controlling the average grain size of the final structure in the submicron range on an ab initio ***,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy（FT-IR）,Raman（Stokes and Anti-Stokes）,X-ray diffraction（XRD） and scanning electron microscopy（SEM） are used to examine the microstructural characteristics based on previously reported differential thermal analysis/thermal gravimetric analysis（DTA/TgA） *** results show a crystallization temperature of 800℃ to attain pure perovskite phase with excellent morphological quality,average grain size 〈Dg〉〈 300 nm and with average crystallite size 〈DC〉〈15 nm.

globe penetration during loco-regional anesthesia: prevalence and review of cases

AIM: To describe prevalence and different clinical signs and management of cases with penetrating eye injuries during loco-regional anesthesia for ophthalmic surgery. METHODS: A retrospective review of clinical records was carried out, identifying cases of globe penetration secondary to peribulbar anesthesia injection during 5 y activity in Centro de Oftalmología Barraquer. RESULTS: A total of 17 460 needle-based ocular anesthesia procedures were performed in our centre and 4 cases of globe penetration were recorded with an estimated prevalence of 0.024%. globe penetrations were always detected in the first 24 h after surgery. Vitreous haemorrhage was found in all the cases. Two eyes presented retinal detachment and two eyes choroidal detachment(CD). The initial surgical approach was performed within the first 48 h. Silicone oil was used as tamponade in three eyes and the fourth case remained only with air. Detachments were solved successfully in all the cases. Functional results varied among cases, depending on ocular remarkable antecedent and globe penetration with or without retinal or ***: Prevalence of globe penetration during loco-regional anesthesia is low in our centre. Physicians should consider the possibility of globe penetration in eyes with postoperative atypical appearance after locoregional anesthesia. Immediate B-scan ultrasonography is recommended in suspicious cases with a dense vitreous haemorrhage. An early vitrectomy surgery in conjunction with laser or cryotherapy at the penetration sites is essential for good anatomical and functional results.

Differentiated payments for environmental services schemes: A methodology proposal

Payment schemes for environmental services face serious budget constraints in Mexico. Payments are equally distributed among forest owners, and the governmental agencies that make payments to beneficiaries do not evaluate the amount of environmental services produced by forested areas. This lack of evaluation could lead to economic and environmental deficiencies that restrict the possible benefits of such programmes. In general, these programmes do not achieve their conservation objectives, and local beneficiaries are not involved in the design or application of these programmes. Similarly, the Payments for Hydrological Environmental Services(PHES) programme of the State of Mexico, Mexico, makes equal payments to beneficiaries of forested areas considering tree density. The objective of the present work was to create a methodology for determining differentiated payments schemes for hydrological environmental services, prioritising areas that contribute the most to groundwater recharge and promote the participation of society. In the Nevado de Toluca Natural Protected Area, the environmental criteria of forest type, tree density and aquifer overexploitation as well as social participation were considered in a multi-criteria analysis implemented in a geographic Information System. A methodology was developed to determine differentiated payments based on specific forest characteristics that influence the potential capacity of forests to recharge groundwater reserves in addition to the level of social participation. In particular, social participation is key as it could ensure the viability of PHES programmes as conservation alternatives in forested areas with high groundwater recharge potential.

Background:Football is the most practised sport in the world and is associated with the risk of injuries in the *** studies have been published that identify injury prevention programs,but there is no review of the full body of evidence on injury prevention programs for use by football *** aim of this article was to carry out a systematic review of published studies on injury prevention programs for adult male footballers,identify points of common understanding and establish recommendations that should be considered in the design of injury prevention ***:PubMed and EMBASE databases were used to identify relevant published articles using the following keywords:"soccer"AND"injury"AND"prevention".Results:A total of 2512 studies were identified initially,but only 11 studies met the inclusion criteria,and their outcomes are *** revealed that injury prevention programs in football have focused on strength training,proprioceptive training,multicomponent programs(balance,core stability,and functional strength and mobility),and warm-up ***:Based on results from the studies analyzed,football players can lower the incidence of match and training injuries by participating in dynamic warm-up programs that include preventive exercises before games or during training sessions,and by adding strength,balance,and mobility training to the training sessions.

Kinetic study of austenite formation during continuous heating of unalloyed ductile iron

The austenite formation kinetics in unalloyed cast ductile iron was studied on the basis of dilatometry measurements, and Avrami＇s equation was used to estimate the material＇s kinetic parameters. A continuous heating transformation diagram was constructed us-ing heating rates in the range of 0.06 to 0.83℃·s^-1. As the heating rate was augmented, the critical temperatures, c1A and Aα, as well as the intercritical range, which was evaluated as the difference between the critical temperatures, α c1Δ T =A_a- A_c1 , increased. At a low heating rate, the kinetics of austenite formation was slow as a consequence of the iron＇s silicon content. The effect of heating rate on k and n, the kinetic parameters of Avrami＇s equation, was also determined. Parameter n, which is associated with nucleation sites and growth geometry, de-creased with an increase in heating rate. In addition, parameter k increased with the increase of heating rate, suggesting that the nucleation and growth rates are carbon-and silicon-diffusion controlled during austenite formation under continuous heating.
