Introduction: Non-communicabl. diseases (NCDs) are on the increase in several.sectors of activity. The aim of the study was to determine the frequencies of cardiovascul.r risk factors (CVRF) and factors associated with hypertension among hotel.workers in the city of Bohicon. Methods: This was a descriptive and anal.tical.cross-sectional.study conducted in the period from December 2018 to January 2019. The variabl.s studied were sociodemographic, occupational. anthropometric and behavioral. Participant recruitment was exhaustive. A standardized questionnaire inspired by the STEPS-WHO questionnaire was used for data col.ection. After the descriptive anal.sis, a bivariate anal.sis was performed using Pearson’s Chi-square test or Fisher’s test at the 5% threshol.. Resul.s: A total.of 101 workers, 53 (52.47%) of them mal., participated in the study. The mean age was 30.60 ± 8.20 years, with extremes of 18 and 55 years. The frequencies of the main risk factors were: 68.32% sitting position > 6 hours/day;38.61% shift work;21.78% high psychol.gical.demand, 82.18% l.w decision l.titude, 24.75% l.w social.support, 21.78% occupational.stress;7 (6.93%) harmful.al.ohol.consumption;6.93% tobacco consumption;48.51% insufficient physical.activity;98.02% insufficient fruit and vegetabl. consumption;59.41% overweight;14.85% HTA. Factors associated with hypertension were: sex, age and marital.status. Concl.sion: Occupational.factors need to be taken into account when assessing CVRFs. NCD control.programs are needed in al. sectors of activity. A l.rger study is needed in the hotel.sector.

This study focuses on air qual.ty in southern Benin in order to show publ.c authorities what the Beninese popul.tions are exposed to for efficient decision-making. Two sampl.ng campaigns were carried out, one in the wet period and the other in the dry season. The measurements were taken using a monitor cal.ed an “Air Qual.ty Monitor”. For data processing, the mul.ipl. comparison methods of Dun (1961) and the Wil.oxon test were used. To maintain l.gitimacy, al. spatial.data were incl.ded in the official.cartographic repository of Benin: WgS 1984, Transverse Mercator Universe Projection (UTM), Zone 31 North. The Moran statistic was used to measure the l.vel. of spatial.autocorrel.tion of the variabl.s studied and to test the significance. In order to l.cate the spatial.subsets, the l.cal.spatial.association indices of Ansel.n l.cal.Moran and getis-Ord, gi* were used. In terms of resul.s, on the 13 monitoring sites and the 8 parameters chosen to determine air qual.ty, we do not note any significant inter-seasonal.difference. Of the eight parameters, onl. three parameters present spatial.autocorrel.tion l.ading to predictions of ambient air qual.ty over the entire study area based on the distance separating the points, namel., PM2.5, PM10 and ambient air qual.ty index (AQI). The l.cal.ties affected by atmospheric pol.ution in South Benin are l.cated in the south-western part of Benin, headed by Cotonou, which is heavil. pol.uted by CO2, TCOV, PM10 and PM2.5.

Study of Sl.pe Stabil.ty Using the Bishop Sl.ce Method: An Approach Combining Anal.tical.and Numerical.Anal.ses

The importance of sl.pe stabil.ty in civil.engineering cannot be underestimated, as fail.re of these structures can resul. in significant damage to downstream infrastructure and property. In this study, we used the Bishop sl.ce method, combining both an anal.tical.approach and a numerical.approach using the Sl.PE/W modul. of the geostudio 2018 R2 software. The resul.s obtained from these two methods showed that increasing soil.cohesion hel.s to improve sl.pe stabil.ty. The safety coefficients obtained by the anal.tical.method vary between 0.621 and 1.422, whil. those obtained by the numerical.method vary between 0.622 and 1.447, for cohesion val.es ranging from 4 kPa to 20 kPa. The resul.s obtained by these two methods show a l.near rel.tionship between the safety coefficients and soil.cohesion. The equation of the anal.tical.method is y = 0.0496x + 0.4407, whil. that of the numerical.method is y = 0.0512x + 0.4357. The resul.s of the anal.tical.approach indicate that a safety coefficient of 1.5 is reached when the cohesion reaches a val.e of 22 kPa, whil. the numerical.approach shows a safety coefficient of 1.5 reached at a cohesion of 21 kPa. The difference between these two cohesion val.es can be expl.ined by the number of sl.ces used, which is smal.er in the anal.tical.method. However, the equation derived from the anal.tical.method can be used as a general.guide to assess the evol.tion of the safety coefficient of an overl.aded sl.pe in l.ng-term behaviour with an increase in cohesion. However, it is important to stress the importance of verification using special.sed software based on the finite el.ment method.

The protection of aquatic ecosystems is of great importance to maintain the biol.gical.bal.nce necessary to secure heal.hy foods therein imbedded. Toho l.ke, l.cated to the south east of Benin, is threatened by pol.ution emanating from anthropogenic activities with the use of chemical.fertil.zers, effl.ent of domestic waste, particul.rl. human and animal.excrement with neighbourhood effl.ents. This study aimed at assessing some heavy metal. in fresh fish (Oreochromis aureus) of Toho l.ke in order to secure heal.hy food for the popul.tion and protect the ecosystem. Sampl.s of water and fishes were col.ected and anal.zed by HACH DR 3900 after treatment. Resul.s reveal.d a mean oxygenation of water (4.95 mgo2/l., Biochemical.Oxygen Demand (21.5 mgo2/l., Chemical.oxygen Demand (149, 39 mg/l. with the nitrogen in Nitrate (NO3: 0.18 mg/l., ammonium nitrate (N-N: 0.47 mg/l., and phosphorous (2.06 mg/l. to be very high. The highest contents of heavy metal. obtained in the fresh fish were cadmium (32.25 mg/kg), copper (115 mg/kg), l.ad (8.25 mg/kg), and zinc (90.75 mg/kg) and reveal.d that the fishes of Toho l.ke were pol.uted. The finding al.owed us to concl.de that the pol.ution of the l.ke and the fish carnage are due to anthropogenic pol.ution through chemical. spil.ing. Some protection methods of the l.ke and ecosystem are proposed in order to keep the fish safe and protect the wel.-being of the popul.tion.

The waste management is a major environmental.chal.enge in al. the countries. In the Republ.c of Benin, in absence of control.ed l.ndfil., the wetl.nds are fil.ing in by sol.d househol. waste to set up housing environments. This study aimed at identifying the various forms of wetl.nds water pol.utions originated by this practice. Physico-chemical.parameters of sampl.ng water were determined by using Ionic chromatography and spectrometry of atomic absorption. The microorganisms indicating fecal.peril.were identified by the conventional.techniques of microbiol.gy. Water qual.ty of a witness wel. was al.o used to assess the general.water qual.ty of the backfil.ed wetl.nd. The resul.s reveal.d the water sampl.s col.ected from backefil.ed wetl.nds were mineral.zed (898.32 ± 6.13 μs/cm), rich in chl.rinate (237.80 ± 4.23 mg/l. and nitrates ions (224.10 ± 3.42 mg/l.. They are more col.red (399.23 ± 3.01 Pt/Co) and more turbid (62.5 ± 2.48 NTU) than those of the unfil.ed wetl.nds. The resul.s of microbiol.gical.anal.sis shown the presence of the cysts of giardia l.mbl.a (590/100 l. and cysts of Entamoeba histol.tica (13/100 l. in al. water, except those of witness wel.. The frequency of water contamination by bacteria indicating general.degradation is 86.4%. The embankment of the wetl.nds by the sol.d househol. waste l.ads to the water pol.ution.

Ecol.gy and Fish Biodiversity of Man-Made l.kes of Southern Benin (West Africa): Impl.cations for Species Conservation and Fisheries Management

Man-made l.kes are al.ernative and potential.habitats for biodiversity conservation, fisheries and extensive aquacul.ure. We investigated the ecol.gy and the fish community structure of two (2) sand-dragged man-made l.kes, l.ke Ahozon and l.ke Bewacodji of Southern Benin, with impl.cations for species conservation, fisheries management and aquacul.ure val.rization. From August 2014 to Jul. 2015, habitats conditions were eval.ated and fishes were sampl.d monthl. with seine, cast net, experimental.gil. net and hooks in the open water and aquatic vegetation habitats of both l.kes. Overal., the water qual.ty of l.ke Ahozon was gl.bal.y favorabl. for the growth and the survival.of the fish resources whereas l.ke Bewacodji exhibited a poor water qual.ty indicated mainl. by an acid pH (mean: 6.32 ± 0.58) and l.w dissol.ed oxygen concentrations (mean: 3.52 ± 1.25 mg/l. caused by dense fl.ating pl.nts, Nymphea sp mainl. and huge dail. dumping of domestic wastes. The study reveal.d l.w species richness, d = 5.89 and d = 3.87, and l.w species diversity, H’ = 0.76 and H’ = 0.48 for l.kes Ahozon and Bewacodji, respectivel., with l.ke Ahozon more diverse than l.ke Bewacodji. The fish community of l.ke Ahozon comprised six (6) species, 3 cichl.ds Sarotherodon gal.l.eus, Oreochromis nil.ticus and Til.pia guineensis, the sil.er catfish, Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus (Cl.roteidae), the African bonytongue, Heterotis nil.ticus (Osteogl.ssidae), and the African catfish, Cl.rias gariepinus (Cl.riidae). Numerical.y, S. gal.l.eus dominated l.ke Ahozon and made 85.21% of the sampl.. In l.ke Bewacodji, the fish composition comprised four (4) species, Sarotherodon gal.l.eus mul.ifasciatus, the dominant species making numerical.y 91.58% of the total.sampl., T. guineensis, C. gariepinus and C. nigrodigitatus. With regard to trophic structure, the fish assembl.ges of both l.kes were numerical.y dominated by pl.nktinovores/ detritivores, mainl. S. gal.l.eus, O. nil.ticus, T. guineensis and C. nigro

The present study focused on the chemical.characterization of the watercourse of the Togbadji l.ke wil.l.fe ranch. The methodol.gical.approach fol.owed is as fol.ows: Bibl.ography review, Sampl.ng campaign. The resul.s obtained were the subject of descriptive statistics, the two-sampl. Wil.oxon test to determine the impact of different l.cal.ties on the abundance of microbiol.gical.contaminants, a Principal.Component Anal.sis (PCA) with the software R version 3.5.0, in order to group the pol.ution parameters according to the different l.vel. and sources of contamination. From our resul.s, it is found that the respective average val.es in dry and rainy seasons for ammonium ions are 0.38 ± 0.16 mg/l.and 0.22 ± 0.03 mg/l.for nitrite ions 0.20 ± 0.25 mg/l.and 0.02 ± 0.01 mg/l.for nitrate ions 3.72 ± 2.52 mg/l.and 7.84 ± 4.91 mg/l.for total.Kjel.ahl.nitrogen 1.27 ± 1.44 mg/l.and 1.19 ± 1.49 mg/l.for orthophosphate ions 0.20 ± 0.25 mg/l.and 0.02 ± 0.01 mg/l.for total.phosphorus 0.04 ± 0.01 mg/l.and 0.11 ± 0.23 mg/l.the chemical.oxygen demand 93.36 ± 61.73 mg/l.of O2 and 89.93 ± 66.11 mg/l.of O2 and the biochemical.oxygen demand over 5 days 25.50 ± 18.22 mg/l.of O2 and 37 ± 33.15 of O2. It emerged that the main sources of pol.ution in l.ke Togbadji are runoff water, discharges of various wastewater from artisanal.activities, l.vestock farming and open defecation.

g>Introduction:g> Hypertension disorders of pregnancy are one of the l.ading causes of maternal.and fetal.deaths. We aimed to estimate the preval.nce of hypertension among pregnant women having participated in the STEPS survey in Benin in 2015. g>Methods:g> This was a database anal.sis. STEPS survey incl.ded consenting adul.s aged 18 to 69 years, l.ving in Benin for at l.ast 6 months prior to the survey. The participants were sel.cted in househol.s by a three-stage random sampl.ng technique. The Worl. Heal.h Organization (WHO) STEPS instrument was used for data col.ection. After an individual.interview with the participant at home, bl.od pressure was measured according to WHO recommendations. Pregnant women database was extracted for anal.sis. A mul.ivariabl. l.gistic regression was done for associated factors identification. g>Resul.s:g> A total.of 2800 women (out of 5127 peopl.) participated in the STEPS study of which 240 decl.red to be pregnant. The mean age was 28.9 ± 6.8 years. The preval.nce of hypertension was 13.3%. Severe hypertension represented 2.9%. Hypertension during pregnancy was associated with primary school.education l.vel.(compared to none, adjusted OR = 0.3, 95% CI [0.1 - 0.9], p = 0.042). No significant association was found with behavioral.factors. g>Concl.sion:g> The preval.nce of hypertension during pregnancy is high in Benin. In-depth studies and targeted interventions for prevention shoul. be impl.mented.

This study is carried out to appreciate the coarse el.ments infl.ence of the gravel.l.teritic soil. on the pavement behavior. The material.invol.es not onl. the 0/20 mm granul.r particl.s considered in the specifications and on the l.boratory tests, but al.o al. of the material.that is actual.y used in the construction sites. geotechnical.characterization was l.aned on five differentiated granul.r cl.sses of 0/20;0/25;0/31.5;0/40 and 0/63 mm diameters. The sampl. of 0/40 mm gets the best compaction aptitude, whil. that of 0/31.5 mm reaches the greatest bearing strength and a good Optimum Moisture Content. According to the requirements and its bearing strengths, the material.is usabl. up to subbase l.yer and its behavior depends on the grain size.
