Computer modeling and simulation for the Pb（Zr1-x Tix ）O3 （PZT） system reveal the role of polar anisotropy on the giant anhysteretic response and structural properties of morphotropic phase boundary （mPB） ferroelectrics. It is shown that a drastic reduction of the compositiondependent polar anisotropy near the mPB flattens energy surfaces and thus facilitates reversible polarization rotation. It is further shown that the polar anisotropy favors formation of polar domains, promotes phase decomposition and results in a two-phase multidomain state, which response to applied electric field is anhysteretic when the polar domain reorientation is only caused by polarization rotation other than polar domain wall movement. This is the case for the decomposing ferroelectrics under a poling electric field with the formation of a two-phase multidomain microstructure, wherein most domain walls are pinned at the two-phase boundaries. Indication of the microstructure dependence of the anhysteretic strain response opens new avenues to improve the piezoelectric properties of these materials through the microstructure engineering.

AIm To investigate the incidence of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis(SBP) in pre-transplant patients and its effect on post transplant mortality and graft failure. mETHODS We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patient records from the organ procurement and transplant network data set. Patients were identified by the presence of SBP pre-transplant. Univariate post-transplant survival models were constructed using the Kaplan-meier technique and multivariate models were constructed using the Cox proportional hazards model. Variables that affected post-transplant graft survival were identified in the SBP population. RESULTS Forty-seven thousand eight hundred and eighty patient records were included in the analysis for both groups, and 1966(4.11%) patients were identified in the data set as having pre-transplant SBP. Patients that had pre-transplant SBP had higher rates of graft loss from recurrent hepatitis C virus(HCV)(3.6% vs 2.0%, P g to graft loss(1.9% vs 1.3%, P = 0.02), primary non-function(4.3% vs 3.0%, P meier survival analysis showed a statistically significant difference in all-cause survival in patients with a history of SBP vs those without(P mortality due to recurrent HCV(HR = 1.11, 95%CI: 1.02-1.21, P g acting anti-viral agents had a higher incidence of pre-transplant SBP than other patients on the liver transplant wait list. SBP history pre-transplant resulted in a higher rate of graft loss due to recurrent HCV infection and chronic rejection.

The present study,antioxidant,enzyme inhibitory,anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity of isolated compounds such as Decussatin(1),gentiacaulein(2),Swertianin(3),1,8-dihydroxy-2,6-dimethoxy xanthone(methylswertianin)(4)8-hydroxy-1,2,4,6-tetramethoxyxanthone(5)and 1,2-dihydroxy-6-methoxyxanthone-8-O--d-xylopyranosyl(6)were investigated using an in vitro *** of antioxidant studies revealed that the compound 6 possessed an efficient 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl(DPPH•)(IC5007.19±4.56μmol/mL),2,2-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiozoline-6-sulfonic acid)(ABTS•^+)(42.62±0.25 mmol/L TE/g),superoxide(57.89±3.45μmol/mL),nitric oxide(18.45±1.23μmol/mL)and hydroxyl(12.13±2.76μmol/mL)radical scavenging activities,ferric reducing antioxidant power(14.76±0.10 molar Fe(II)/g),metal chelating(213.85±27.18 mg EDTA/g)*** 6 and 3 exhibited significant anti-proliferative *** 6 displayed strongest antibacterial activity against Streptococcus pneumoniae and Escherichia coli with mIC value of 3.90μg.mL and 21.21±0.25 and 20.27±0.11 mm zone of inhibition at 25μg.mL concentration *** the membrane stabilization and protein denaturation test 3 was the most potent with an IC50 value of 12.57,18.75μmol/mL respectively.

It has been reported that diallyl sulfide (DAS), a sulfur-containing volatile compound in garlic (Allium sativum ), exerts anticarcinogenic activity in various rodent tumor models. In the present study, the antitumor property of DAS was tested in Swiss albino mice in the two steqe initiation-promotion mouse skin carcinogenesis. Skin cancers were initiated topically with a single subcarcinOgenic dose (52μg) of 7, 12-dimethyl benz (a) anthracene (DmBA). Promotion was performed by twice weekly applications of 12-O-tetradecanoyl phorbol-13-acetate (TPA) at a dose of 5μg/animal for 32 weeks. DAS was applied topically (250μg/animal) thrice weekly for 3 weeks for anti-initiating and 1 h prior to each promotion treatment for anti-promoting studies. The results showed that the treatment schedule of DAS can effectively delay the onset of tumorigenesis and reduce the cumulative number of tumors and the average number of tumors per mouse. In groups in which DAS applied prior to initiation or promotion, a significant population of the aniinals remained tumor-free till the termination of experiment. These findings suggest that DAS can effectively inhibit chemically induced mouse skincarcinogenesis.

The effect of chromium doping on the photo- voltaic efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells （DSSCs） with anodized TiO2 nanotubes followed by an annealing process was investigated. Cr-doped TiO2 nanotubes （CrTNs） with different amounts of chromium were obtained by anodizing of titanium foils in a single-step process using potassium chro- mate as the chromium source. Film features were investigated by scanning electron microscopy （SEm）, X-ray diffraction （XRD）, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy （EDX）, and ultraviolet-visible （UV-Vis） spectroscopy. It is clearly seen that highly ordered TiO2 nanotubes are formed in an anodizing solution free of potassium chromate, and with a gradual increase in the potassium chromate concentration, these nanotube structures change to nanoporous and compact films without porosity. The photovoltaic efficiencies of fabricated DSSCs were characterized by a solar cell measurement sys- tem via the photocurrent-voltage （l-V） curves. It is found that the photovoltaic efficiency of DSSCs with CrTNsl sample is improved by more than three times compared to that of DSSCs with undoped TNs. The energy conversion efficiency increases from 1.05 % to 3.89 % by doping of chromium.

Objective Toxic metal ions have been implicated in the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO). metallothionines (mT) and plant flavonoids have been reported in the intervention against oxidative damage. We investigated the effect of zinc induced mT and green tea polyphenol (gTP) in reducing the oxidative responses induced by nickel and platinum. methods Zinc (10 mg/kg b. wt, sc) was administered to rats twice at a gap of 24hrs and gTP (10 mg/100 mL in drinking water) was fed ad libitum for 8 days. Nickel chloride (150 umol/***, ip) and cisplatin (50 mmol/kg ***, sc) was administered to rats 24 h after Zn or gTP pre-treatment. Animals of all the groups were sacrificed 16 hrs after treatment and biochemical markers for toxicity were monitored. Results Zinc or gTP pre-treatment caused significant protection against nickel or cisplatin enhanced mortality in rats, and reduction in lipid peroxidation and NO. Conclusion It is proposed that inhibition of ROS and NO by gTP and zinc may prove useful as a selective pharmacological agent in the amelioration of metal toxicity.
