Ethylenediurea(EDU)spray effects on willows(Salix sachalinensis F.Schmid)grown in ambient or ozone-enriched air:implications for renewable biomass production

Ground-level ozone(O_(3)) is a widespread air pollutant causing extensive injuries in plants.However,its effects on perennial energy crops remain poorly under-stood due to technical difficulties in cultivating fast-growing shrubs for biomass production under O_(3) treatment on the field.Here we present the results of a two-year evaluation in the framework of which willow(Salix sachalinensis F.Schmid)shrubs were exposed to ambient(AOZ)or elevated(EOZ)O_(3) in two successive growing seasons(2014,2015)and treated with 0(EDU0)or 400 mg L^(−1)(EDU400)eth-ylenediurea spray in the second growing season.In 2014,EOZ altered the chemical composition of both top young and fallen leaves,and a novel mechanism of decreasing Mg in fallen leaves while highly enriching it in young top leaves was revealed in shrubs exposed to EOZ.In 2015,EDU400 alleviated EOZ-induced decreases in leaf fresh mass to dry mass ratio(FM/DM)and leaf mass per area(LMA).While EDU400 protected against EOZ-induced suppression of the maximum rate at which leaves can fix carbon(A_(max))in O_(3)-asymptomatic leaves,it did not alle-viate EOZ-induced suppression of the maximum rates of carboxylation(VCmax)and electron transport(J_(max))and chlorophylls a,b,and a+b in the same type of leaves.In O_(3)-symptomatic leaves,however,EDU400 alleviated EOZ-induced suppression of chlorophylls a and a+b,indicating different mode of action of EDU between O_(3)-asymptomatic and O_(3)-symptomatic leaves.Extensive herbivory occurred only in AOZ-exposed plants,leading to suppressed biomass production,while EOZ also led to a similar suppression of biomass production(EDU0×EOZ vs.EDU400×EOZ).In 2016,carry-over effects were also evaluated following cropping and transplantation into new ambient plots.Effects of EOZ in the preceding growing seasons extended to the third growing season in the form of suppressed ratoon biomass production,indicating carry-over effect of EOZ.Although EDU400 protected against EOZ-induced suppression of biomass production when applied in 2015,there was no

Poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA)has been widely used in industrial and consumer products.In this study,we aimed to address this challenge by synthesizing well-defined multiarm poly(vinyl acetate)(PVAc)through the use of nonhydrolyzable vinyl ethertype multifunctional RAFT agents.The control over molecular weights was achieved by the RAFT process to afford polymers with dominant head-to-head linkages at the terminal.Especially,quantitative end-functionalization of the synthesized PVAc was performed using Michael thiol−ene or disulfide exchange reactions.Consequently,saponification of the PVAc enabled the synthesis of end-functionalized multiarm PVA in an efficient manner.This straightforward approach afforded well-defined functional PVAs,which enable further chemical modification,thus widening the utility of PVA in a range of applications,such as precisely controlled network synthesis and bioconjugation.

Current practice for pulmonary hypertension

Objective To investigate the current practice of pulmonary hypertension including current epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment. Data sources The review was based on data obtained from the published articles and guidelines. Study selection Articles with high level of evidence or current best evidence in each issue were selected to be reviewed. Results Overall prevalence of pulmonary hypertension was 0.3% to 6% with left heart disease occupying the most proportion, followed by pulmonary disease, pulmonary arterial hypertension and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. In diagnosis, a flow diagram of diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension, differential diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension and how to determine the severity of pulmonary hypertension are explained including recent development of magnetic resonance imaging and gene abnormality study on bone morphogenetic protein receptor ll. In treatment, newly- developed pulmonary vasodilators and the way to use them are shown to treat pulmonary hypertension. Conclusion Safer and more effective treatment algorithm and basic researches and clinical trials are warranted to be explored.

Pharmacological characteristics of Kampo medicine as a mixture of constituents and ingredients

Herbal medicine in Japan is termed as Kampo medicine, which is derived from traditional Chinese medicine. Shakuyakukanzoto （Shao-Yao-Gan-Cao-Tang） as a kind of Kampo formulations is composed of just two components; Paeoniae Radix and Glycyrrhizae Radix, which produced marked relaxation of intestinal tract. Mokuboito （Mu-Fang-Ji-Tang） inhibited cardiac ionic channel currents, and as a mixture also produced great vasodilatation. Sinomenine （a main ingredient of Mokuboito） as a single compound also caused the vasodilatation, but decreased it along with ageing. Gypsum containing in Mokuboito and Chotosan （Diao-Teng-San） caused more marked effects, as compared with those without Gypsum. On the other hand, Rokumigan （Liu-Wei-Wan）, Hachimijiogan （Ba-Wei-Di-Huang-Wan） and Goshajinkigan （Niu- Che-Shen-Qi-Wan） increase in order the number of contained ingredients. The formulations with more herbs （ingredients） produced much more effective actions on rat aorta, presumably due to compensation of the decline of pharmacological sensitivity with ageing. Thus, there are some important differences between single chemical drugs and mixture drugs with many ingredients. The effects of Kampo medicine （mixture） are never just a sum of each effect induced by a lot of in qredients. For elder persons, furthermore, Kampo medicine exerts more effective actions.

Holographic augmented reality display with conical holographic optical element for wide viewing zone

In this study, we propose a holographic augmented reality (AR) display with a wide viewing zone realized by using a special-designed reflective optical element. A conical holographic optical element (HOE) is used as such a reflective optical element. This conical HOE was implemented to reconstruct a diverging spherical wave with a wide spread angle. It has a sharp wavelength selectivity by recording it as a volume hologram, enabling augmented reality (AR) representation of real and virtual 3D objects. The quality of the generated spherical wave and the spectral reflectivity of the fabricated conical HOE were investigated. An optical superimposition between real and virtual 3D objects was demonstrated, thereby enhancing the validity of our proposed method. A horizontal viewing zone of 140° and a vertical viewing zone of 30° were experimentally confirmed. The fabrication procedure for the conical HOE is presented, and the calculation method of the computer-generated hologram (CGH) based on Fermat’s principle is explained in detail.

Assessing the impact of climate change(CC)on agricultural production systems is mainly done using crop models associated with climate model outputs.This review is one of the few,with the main objective of providing a recent compendium of CC impact studies on irrigation needs and rice yields for a better understanding and use of climate and crop models.We discuss the strengths and weaknesses of climate impact studies on agricultural production systems,with a particular focus on uncertainty and sensitivity analyses of crop models.Although the new generation global climate models(GCMs)are more robust than previous ones,there is still a need to consider the effect of climate uncertainty on estimates when using them.Current GCMs cannot directly simulate the agro-climatic variables of interest for future irrigation assessment,hence the use of intelligent climate tools.Therefore,sensitivity and uncertainty analyses must be applied to crop models,especially for their calibration under different conditions.The impacts of CC on irrigation needs and rice yields vary across regions,seasons,varieties and crop models.Finally,integrated assessments,the use of remote sensing data,climate smart tools,CO_(2)enrichment experiments,consideration of changing crop management practices and multi-scale crop modeling,seem to be the approaches to be pursued for future climate impact assessments for agricultural systems。

MicroRNA in TLR signaling and endotoxin tolerance

Toll-like receptors(TLRs)in innate immune cells are the prime cellular sensors for microbial components.TLR activation leads to the production of proinflammatory mediators and thus TLR signaling must be properly regulated by various mechanisms to maintain homeostasis.TLR4-ligand lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-induced tolerance or cross-tolerance is one such mechanism,and it plays an important role in innate immunity.Tolerance is established and sustained by the activity of the microRNA miR-146a,which is known to target key elements of the myeloid differentiation factor 88(MyD88)signaling pathway,including IL-1 receptor-associated kinase(IRAK1),IRAK2 and tumor-necrosis factor(TNF)receptor-associated factor 6(TRAF6).In this review,we comprehensively examine the TLR signaling involved in innate immunity,with special focus on LPS-induced tolerance.The function of TLR ligand-induced microRNAs,including miR-146a,miR-155 and miR-132,in regulating inflammatory mediators,and their impact on the immune system and human diseases,are discussed.Modulation of these microRNAs may affect TLR pathway activation and help to develop therapeutics against inflammatory diseases.

Structural Analysis of Eu_2Mn_(2/3)Ta_ 4/3O_7 with a Pyrochlore-Related Structure

Eu 2Mn 2/3Ta 4/3O 7 specimen was synthesized from Eu 2O 3, MnO and Ta 2O 5 in a reducing atmosphere. Structure analysis was carried out by Rietveld method from X-ray diffraction data. The X-ray diffraction profile calculated with monoclinic C2/c model was in a good agreement with the observed X-ray diffraction patterns since several small peaks of super lattice could be also assigned with C2/c symmetry in addition to fundamental reflection peaks. Eu 2Mn 2/3Ta 4/3O 7 has two kinds of distorted (Mn, Ta)O 6 octahedra and HTB layers, which deviates from the regular forms. Europium atoms coordinate to eight or seven oxygen atoms and lead to two kinds of polyhedra, EuO 8 and EuO 7 in this compound.

Screening Method for 23 Alkaloids in Human Serum Using LC/MS/MS with a Pentafluorophenyl Column in Dynamic Multiple Reaction Monitoring Mode

Alkaloids are nitrogen-containing organic compounds, generally basic, and found in plants, fungi, and bacteria. Some alkaloids are used in medicine, but some compounds are highly toxic. Accidental ingestion, homicide, and suicide have occurred due to plants containing alkaloids. The identification of toxic components in biological samples is important for the diagnosis and/or treatment of poisoning cases in forensic and emergency medicine. Alkaloids have a wide variety of structures, such as isoquinoline alkaloid, indole alkaloid, tropane alkaloid, and diterpene alkaloid;therefore, there are few reports of simultaneous analysis methods. We have established a method for the simultaneous analysis of 23 alkaloids in human serum with a liquid chromatograph-tandem mass spectrometer (LC/MS/MS). A liquid-liquid extraction which was modified from the first step of the QuEChERS AOAC method was used for serum pretreatment. The separation of the compounds was performed using a pentafluorophenyl (PFP) column, CAPCELL CORE PFP (2.1 mm I.D. × 100 mm, 2.7 μm) in gradient mode. Mobile phase A consisted of 10 mM ammonium formate and 0.1% formic acid in ultrapure water, and mobile phase B was 10 mM ammonium formate and 0.1% formic acid in methanol. Simultaneous analysis was performed in dynamic multiple reaction monitoring mode. The separation of 23 alkaloids was satisfactory, as PFP columns exhibited different retention behaviors than alkyl phase columns. The PFP column effectively retained polar aromatic compounds;therefore, it was suitable for alkaloid analysis. The validated method was applied to a forensic case of aconite poisoning. The present method was useful in LC/MS/MS screening for 23 alkaloids in human serum.

A User-friendly Living Cationic Polymerization: Degenerative Chaintransfer Polymerization of Vinyl Ethers by Simply Using Mixtures of Weak and Superstrong Protonic Acids

Mixtures of a weak protonic acid and a trace amount of superstrong protonic acid were used for the simple control of the cationic polymerization of vinyl ethers via a degenerative chain-transfer mechanism, in which the former acid works as a precursor of the chain transfer agent (CTA) or the dormant species and the latter works as a source of the cationic propagating species. The addition of mixtures of phosphoric acid dibutyl ester ((n=BuO)2PO2H) or 1 -octanethiol (n-C8H17SH) and a trace amount of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TfOH) to a solution of isobutyl vinyl ether (IBVE) at -78℃ resulted in polymers with controlled molecular weights, which were basically determined by the feed ratio of IBVE to the weak protonic acid, and narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn≈ 1.1). These results were almost the same as those obtained using their prepared adducts of IBVE as CT As in the presence of a trace amount of TfOH under similar conditions. Methanesulfonic acid (CH3SO3H), whose adduct of IBVE has not been isolated due to instability, was similarly used in conjunction with trace TfOH to result in controlled molecular weights but slightly broader MWDs (Mw/Mn = 1.2-1.8). These results indicate that the sulfoxonium ion is also an effective intermediate in the cationic DT polymerization in addition to the phosphonium and sulfonium intermediates derived from (n=BuO)2PO2H and C8H17SH, respectively. The simple living cationic polymerization was thus achieved by using a combination of a weak protonic acid and a trace amount of TfOH, which are both easily available, low cost, free from metal, and easy to handle, without need for preparation of the initiator.
