Ground-level ozone(O_(3)) is a widespread air pollutant causing extensive injuries in ***,its effects on perennial energy crops remain poorly under-stood due to technical difficulties in cultivating fast-growing shrubs for biomass production under O_(3) treatment on the *** we present the results of a two-year evaluation in the framework of which willow(Salix sachalinensis ***)shrubs were exposed to ambient(AOZ)or elevated(EOZ)O_(3) in two successive growing seasons(2014,2015)and treated with 0(EDU0)or 400 mg L^(−1)(EDU400)eth-ylenediurea spray in the second growing *** 2014,EOZ altered the chemical composition of both top young and fallen leaves,and a novel mechanism of decreasing Mg in fallen leaves while highly enriching it in young top leaves was revealed in shrubs exposed to *** 2015,EDU400 alleviated EOZ-induced decreases in leaf fresh mass to dry mass ratio(FM/DM)and leaf mass per area(LMA).While EDU400 protected against EOZ-induced suppression of the maximum rate at which leaves can fix carbon(A_(max))in O_(3)-asymptomatic leaves,it did not alle-viate EOZ-induced suppression of the maximum rates of carboxylation(VCmax)and electron transport(J_(max))and chlorophylls a,b,and a+b in the same type of *** O_(3)-symptomatic leaves,however,EDU400 alleviated EOZ-induced suppression of chlorophylls a and a+b,indicating different mode of action of EDU between O_(3)-asymptomatic and O_(3)-symptomatic *** herbivory occurred only in AOZ-exposed plants,leading to suppressed biomass production,while EOZ also led to a similar suppression of biomass production(EDU0×EOZ ***400×EOZ).In 2016,carry-over effects were also evaluated following cropping and transplantation into new ambient *** of EOZ in the preceding growing seasons extended to the third growing season in the form of suppressed ratoon biomass production,indicating carry-over effect of *** EDU400 protected against EOZ-induced suppression of biom

Structural Analysis of Eu_2Mn_(2/3)Ta_ 4/3O_7 with a Pyrochlore-Related Structure

Eu 2Mn 2/3Ta 4/3O 7 specimen was synthesized from Eu 2O 3, MnO and Ta 2O 5 in a reducing atmosphere. Structure analysis was carried out by Rietveld method from X-ray diffraction data. The X-ray diffraction profile calculated with monoclinic C2/c model was in a good agreement with the observed X-ray diffraction patterns since several small peaks of super lattice could be also assigned with C2/c symmetry in addition to fundamental reflection peaks. Eu 2Mn 2/3Ta 4/3O 7 has two kinds of distorted (Mn, Ta)O 6 octahedra and HTB layers, which deviates from the regular forms. Europium atoms coordinate to eight or seven oxygen atoms and lead to two kinds of polyhedra, EuO 8 and EuO 7 in this compound.

The New Plating Process on Plastics

This process does not use general electroless plating solution containing formaldehyde(carcinogen) and phosphate(the object of waste water regulation). Furthermore, we succeeded in developing a new electroless copper plating solution which is usable semi-permanently by using the special reducing agent. The electroless deposition forms a very thin conductive film on substrate. Therefore, it can prevent some appearance defects (e.g. pits, pin-holes, laminations and inclusions) that occur in the conventional ones. In addition, it is possible to eliminate electroplating of copper from the process by applying the exclusive nickel solution in electroplating. Therefore, the obtained metal parts can be recycled as high quality stainless steel. Given this copper electroplating-free process, 25 u m-thick nickel deposition at the stage of electroplating, at least, enables the metal layers to show properties as versatile as those of the conventional(its total thickness is 25 n m in the comparative conventional process).

A User-friendly Living Cationic Polymerization: Degenerative Chaintransfer Polymerization of Vinyl Ethers by Simply Using Mixtures of Weak and Superstrong Protonic Acids

Mixtures of a weak protonic acid and a trace amount of superstrong protonic acid were used for the simple control of the cationic polymerization of vinyl ethers via a degenerative chain-transfer mechanism, in which the former acid works as a precursor of the chain transfer agent (CTA) or the dormant species and the latter works as a source of the cationic propagating species. The addition of mixtures of phosphoric acid dibutyl ester ((n=BuO)2PO2H) or 1 -octanethiol (n-C8H17SH) and a trace amount of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TfOH) to a solution of isobutyl vinyl ether (IBVE) at -78℃ resulted in polymers with controlled molecular weights, which were basically determined by the feed ratio of IBVE to the weak protonic acid, and narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn≈ 1.1). These results were almost the same as those obtained using their prepared adducts of IBVE as CT As in the presence of a trace amount of TfOH under similar conditions. Methanesulfonic acid (CH3SO3H), whose adduct of IBVE has not been isolated due to instability, was similarly used in conjunction with trace TfOH to result in controlled molecular weights but slightly broader MWDs (Mw/Mn = 1.2-1.8). These results indicate that the sulfoxonium ion is also an effective intermediate in the cationic DT polymerization in addition to the phosphonium and sulfonium intermediates derived from (n=BuO)2PO2H and C8H17SH, respectively. The simple living cationic polymerization was thus achieved by using a combination of a weak protonic acid and a trace amount of TfOH, which are both easily available, low cost, free from metal, and easy to handle, without need for preparation of the initiator.

There is a close relation between the characteristics of products and the chemical composition control of inclusions in steelmaking process. Therefore, it is very important for a warranty of product’s characteristics to improve inclusion quality resulting in defective products. In the present work, the control technique of inclusions’ chemical composition is discussed thermodynamically based on the Redlich-Kister type polynomial to metallic solution and regular solution model to molten oxide solution. It is very effective for the precise chemical composition control of oxides to determine the concentration of deoxidizers based on the thermodynamic relation among dissolved deoxidizers and oxygen, because it is known that oxide inclusions are equilibrated with them in molten steel in the steel making process. High alloy steel production process was focused in the present work.

Improving Representation of Tropical Cloud Overlap in GCMs Based on Cloud-Resolving Model Data

The decorrelation length（Lcf） has been widely used to describe the behavior of vertical overlap of clouds in general circulation models（GCMs）; however, it has been a challenge to associate Lcf with the large-scale meteorological conditions during cloud evolution. This study explored the relationship between Lcf and the strength of atmospheric convection in the tropics based on output from a global cloud-resolving model. Lcf tends to increase with vertical velocity in the mid-troposphere（w500） at locations of ascent, but shows little or no dependency on w500 at locations of descent. A representation of Lcf as a function of vertical velocity is obtained, with a linear regression in ascending regions and a constant value in descending regions. This simple and dynamic-related representation of Lcf leads to a significant improvement in simulation of both cloud cover and radiation fields compared with traditional overlap treatments. This work presents a physically justifiable approach to depicting cloud overlap in the tropics in GCMs.

Stability of phases in (Ba, Gd)MnO_3 solid solution system

The existing phases in BaxGd1-xMnO3 solid solution system （0≤x≤ 1） were studied by analyzing the detailed crystal structure of each composition from the results of the Rietveld method using powder X-ray diffraction data. For a small substitution of Ba for Gd （0≤x〈0. 1）, the orthorhombic phase with a perovskite type structure （Pnma space group） was stably formed and this fact was supported by the electron diffraction data. There existed an intermediate phase of Ba0.33Gd0.67MnO3, which was characterized as the tetragonal phase with perovskite structure. The composition range of this phase was narrow and almost line compound. Between the regions of these phases, there existed two-phase region. There was also a two-phase region between the intermediate tetragonal phase and BaMnO3. Measurement of electrical conductivities of these orthorhombic solid solutions and tetragonal phases showed semiconducting behaviors for both phases and the existence of the phase transition at high temperature for the orthorhombic phase, The transition temperature decreased as the Ba content increased.

Geographic expansion of the cabbage butterfly （Pieris rapae） and the evolution of highly UV-reflecting females

Reflection of ultraviolet （UV） light by the wings of the female Eurasian cabbage butterfly, Pieris rapae, shows a large geographic variation. The wings of the female of the European subspecies, P. rapae rapae, reflect little UV light, while butterflies of the Asian subspecies, P. rapae crucivora, may reflect it strongly or at only intermediate levels. The geographic region where P. rapae originated remains to be determined, Moreover, it is not clear if females with wings that reflect little UV light are ancestral to females with wings that reflect UV strongly or vice versa. In the present study, we aimed to determine the geographic origin and ancestral UV pattern of cabbage butterflies through mitochondrial DNA （mtDNA） sequence analysis and amplified fragment length polymorphism （AFLP） analysis. The results of these investigations suggest that P. rapae is of European origin and that it has expanded its distribution eastward to Asia. It follows that the ancestral subspecies is the type with UV-absorbing wings. Lower nucleotide diversities and haplotype network patterns ofmtDNA derived from East Asian populations suggest that population expansion from Europe to East Asia probably occurred fairly recently and at a rapid rate.
