We present our approach for constructing a federated searching system for Japanese humanities digital libraries using automatic metadata *** discuss some achievements in the ongoing research to construct a federated searching system. The goals of this system are(1) to perform metadata mapping automatically for Japanese heterogeneous humanities digital libraries and(2) to let users access multiple humanities digital libraries by using only one query *** proposed automatic metadata mapping method produced the average mapping precision of 94.9%.We also address the metadata-related challenges facing Japanese humanities databases.

Aim: To confirm the stability of exogenous genes in the generation of transgenic chickens using ejaculated chicken sperm, the deoxyribonuclease (DNase) activity was evaluated in the seminal plasma of ejaculated semen and the stability of DNA was examined by adding lipofection reagents. Methods: A PCR fragment (249 bp) of pEGFPN-1 vector was used as the DNA substrate and was incubated with the seminal plasma at 40 ℃ for 30 min. Then, the whole reaction solution was subjected to agarose gel electrophoresis and the DNA size was evaluated under UV light. Results: The DNA substrate was completely diminished after incubation with seminal plasma. However, the substrate was intact after incubation with heat-treated seminal plasma or incubation with seminal plasma in the presence of 0.5 mmol/L -5 mmol/L EDTA. The substrate was stabilized in the seminal plasma by the addition of commercially available lipofection reagents. Conclusion: The DNase activity is present in the seminal plasma of ejaculated chicken semen. However, DNA is stable in the liposomal-DNA complex.

Incremental Newton（IN） iteration, proposed by Iannazzo, is stable for computing the matrix pth root, and its computational cost is O（n3p） flops per iteration. In this paper, a cost-efficient variant of IN iteration is presented. The computational cost of the variant well agrees with O（n3logp） flops per iteration, if p is up to at least 100.

Argentine ant invasion changed colour-polymorphic composition of ant-mimetic jumping spider Myrmarachne in southwestern Japan. In Argentine ant-free sites, most of Myrmarachne exhibited all-blackish colouration. In Argentine ant-infested sites, on the other hand, blackish morph decreased, and bicoloured (i.e. partly bright-coloured) morphs increased in dominance. Invasive Argentine ant drives away native blackish ants. Disappearance of blackish model ants supposedly led to malfunction of Batesian mimicry of Myrmarachne.

Structures of Stoichiometric Sodium Oxide Cluster Cations Studied by Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry

Structures of stable compositions of sodium oxide cluster cations (NanOm+,n≤11) have been investigated by ion mobility mass spectrometry. Stoichiometric compositions series, Na(Na2O)(n-1)/2^+(n=3, 5, 7, 9, and 11), were observed as stable composition series, and NaO(Na2O)(n-1)/2^+ series (n=5, 7, 9, and 11) were observed as secondary stable series in the mass spectra. To assign the structures of these cluster ion series, collision cross sections between the ions and helium buffer gas were determined experimentally from the ion mobility measurements. Theoretical collision cross sections were also calculated for optimized structures of these compositions. Finally, the structures of Na(Na2O)(n-1)/2^+ and NaO(Na2O)(n-1)/2^+ were assigned to those having similar structural frames for each n except for n=9. All bonds in the assigned structures of Na(Na2O)(n-1)/2^+ were between sodium and oxygen. On the other hand, there was one O-O bond in addition to Na-O bonds in NaO(Na2O)(n-1)/2^+. This result indicates that NaO(Na2O)(n-1)/2^+ have a peroxide ion (O22-) as a substitute for an oxide ion (O2-) of Na(Na2O)(n-1)/2^+. As a result, both stable series, Na(Na2O)(n-1)/2^+ and NaO(Na2O)(n-1)/2^+, are closed-shell compositions. These closed-shell characteristics have a strong influence on the stability of sodium oxide cluster cations.

Precocious In-Vitro Flowering of Perennial Asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) Regenerants with a Chemical Inducer

A precocious flowering system of regenerants in asparagus (Asparagus officinalis) was achieved by treatment with a chemical inducer. Somatic embryos withered completely by being processed for 8 - 12 days with 200 μM n-propyl N-(3,4-dichloro-phenyl)carbamate that had been dissolved in distilled water. In contrast, precocious flowering occurred at an extremely low rate (3.4%) when somatic embryos were processed in carbamate dissolved in Murashige and Skoog’s liquid medium. To encapsulate the female and male embryos, we surveyed the optimum conditions of viscosity and concentration of sodium alginate for encapsulating the seeds, and we screened the values of 80 - 120 cps and 2% - 3%, respectively. The synthetic seeds produced also withered when they were processed with the carbamate dissolved in distilled water. However, when Murashige and Skoog’s liquid medium was used for the solvent, the flowering frequency of the synthetic seeds was enhanced (13.3%). Based on our morphological and histological observations, female and male regenerants that were processed with the carbamate solution produced individual flower organs. The conversion of sex expression did not occur. A precocious flowering system would allow a significant reduction in the time required for perennial seedlings to flower and can, therefore, save time required for further experiments that employ floral homeotic mutants.
