Mechanism of superlubricity of a DLC/Si_(3)N_(4) contact in the presence of castor oil and other green lubricants

To meet the surging needs in energy efficiency and eco-friendly lubricants,a novel superlubricious technology using a vegetable oil and ceramic materials is *** coupling different hydrogen-free amorphous carbon coatings with varying fraction of sp^(2) and sp^(3) hybridized carbon in presence of a commercially available silicon nitride bulk ceramic,castor oil provides superlubricity although the liquid vegetable oil film in the contact is only a few nanometres thick at *** a partial liquid film possibly separating surfaces in contact,local tribochemical reactions between asperities are essential to maintain superlubricity at low *** local pressure activates chemical degradation of castor oil generating graphitic/graphenic-like species on top of asperities,thus helping both the chemical polishing of surface and its chemical passivation by H and OH ***,the formation of the formation of–(CH_(2)–CH_(2))n–noligomers have been evidenced to have a major role in the friction *** simulation unveils that formation of chemical degradation products of castor oil on friction surfaces are favoured by the quantity of sp^(2)-hybridized carbon atoms in the amorphous carbon ***,tuning sp^(2)-carbon content in hydrogen-free amorphous carbon,in particular,on the top layers of the coating,provides an alternative way to control superlubricity achieved with castor oil and other selected green lubricants.

Thermal and salinity effects on locomotor performance of Thoropa taophora tadpoles(Anura,Cycloramphidae)

It is well known that environmental temperature influences several biological functions of ectotherms,notably in *** high permeability of anuran skin,associated with the effect of elevated environmental temperature,potentiates the dehydration process and this combination may restrict locomotor ***pa taophora is an endemic species from the Atlantic Rainforest whose tadpoles are semiterrestrial and predominantly diurnal,and are found in rocky seashores where they are exposed to sea spray and high *** this study we investigated how temperature and salinity conditions affect the locomotor performance in Thoropa taophora *** also assessed how different osmotic concentrations affect the activity of the metabolic pathways that support muscle *** measured the sprint speed of tadpoles of various sizes at different temperatures and salinities in the *** also measured the activity of the enzymes pyruvate kinase(PK),lactate dehydrogenase(LDH)and citrate synthase(CS)in different temperatures and osmotic concentrations,and calculated the thermal sensitivity and the activity constants for each *** results showed that,in general,sprint speed decreased with increasing temperature and ***,whereas the effect of increased salinity was similar in smaller and larger tadpoles,increased temperature had a higher negative impact on sprint speed of larger tadpoles,thus indicating low thermal sensitivity of small *** and LDH thermal sensitivities and LDH constant of activity decreased as the osmolality *** conclusion,the locomotor capacity of tadpoles was decreased by temperature and salinity,which may be related to a decrease in anaerobic metabolism both in terms of sensitivity and total energy turnover through enzymatic *** discuss the ecological consequences,including the potential impacts on predator escape behavior promoted by changes in metabolism and locomotor performance

The metasedimentary sequence of the Cushamen Formation in the western North Patagonian Massif is540 m thick and comprises six sedimentary lithofacies associations related to a glacimarine *** of these lithofacies represent distal glacimarine environments, whereas another one was deposited in proximal glacimarine environments, and the last includes subglacial environments. The organization and configuration of these lithofacies associations represent the advance and retreat of the glacier masses. The maximum glacial advance is correlatable with the G2 glacial interval of the Pennsylvanian Pampa de Tepuel, Las Salinas and Valley Chico, formations of the Extraandean Chubut, and the southern part of Neuquen Cordillera. Contemporaneously, in southern Chile there are marine and glacimarine sediments. The chronostratigraphic relationships between the Silurian to Permian units allow five paleogeographic stages to be distinguished. The middle Silurian-late Devonian igneous rocks represent the first magmatic stage. The second stage, which is transitional to the first, is represented by a marine basin that includes the late Devonian-early Carboniferous Esquel and Rio Pescado formations and the Llanquihue Complex. The third stage(early-late Carboniferous) includes granitoids of the second magmatic event that partially overlapped the first magmatic igneous belt. The fourth stage belongs to the late Carboniferous sedimentation of the Cushamen and equivalent formations. The extended early Permian magmatism was the last Paleozoic event in the studied area.

Soil attributes structure plant assemblages across an Atlantic forest mosaic

Aims Community assembly persists as a key topic in ecology due to the complex variation in the relative importance of assembly forces and mechanisms across spatio-temporal scales and *** we address a forest-savanna vegetation mosaic in the Brazilian Atlantic forest to examine the role played by soil attributes as determinants of community assembly and organiza-tion at a landscape spatial *** We examined soil and plant assemblage attributes across 23 plots of forest and savanna in a 1600 km2 landscape exposed to the same climatic conditions in the Atlantic forest region of northeast *** attributes included species richness,taxonomic and functional composition(community weighted mean,CWM)and functional diversity(quadratic diversity;Rao’s quadratic entropy index)relative to plant leaf area,specific leaf area,leaf dry matter content,thickness and *** Findings Our results suggest that forest and savanna patches exposed to the same climatic conditions clearly differ in terms of soil attributes,plant assemblage structure,taxonomic and functional *** selecting particular plant strategies relative to resource economy,soil potentially affects community structure,with forest assemblages bear-ing more acquisitive resource-use strategies,while conservative plant strategies are more frequent in ***,savanna-forest mosaics in the Atlantic forest region represent spatially organized plant assemblages in terms of taxonomic and functional features,with a sig-nal of trait convergence in both vegetation ***-mediated filter-ing thus emerges as a potential deterministic assembly force affecting the spatial organization of savanna-forest boundaries and mosaics.

We performed a literature mini-review of the clinical profile of patients with spondylarthritis who are also human leukocyte antigen(HLA)-*** seems to us that patients with HLA-B27 and HLA-B51 are more common in men,Asians and between the third and ninth decades of *** are more likely to develop peripheral joint conditions,with cutaneous manifestations(e.g.,oral ulcers)and ***,more robust epidemiological studies with more accurate methodology and multicenter locations are needed to better map the role of the interaction between HLA-B51 in patients with spondylarthritis.

OI 630.0 nm airglow observations,from a new observatory at Bom Jesus de Lapa,were used to study the interaction between EPBs(Equatorial Plasma Bubbles)and the MSTID(Medium-Scale Traveling Ionospheric Disturbance)over the Northeast region in *** the night of September 16 to 17,2020,an EPB was observed propagating eastward,in an apparent fossil stage,until it interacted with a dark band electrified MSTID(e MSTID).After the interaction,four EPBs merged,followed by an abrupt southward development and *** of the data suggests that an eastward polarization electric field,induced by the dark band e MSTID,forced the EPB into an upward drift,growing latitudinally along the magnetic field lines and then bifurcating.

The Major Facilitator Superfamily(MFS)is ubiquitous in living organisms and represents the largest group of secondary active membrane *** plants,significant research efforts have focused on the role of specific families within the MFS,particularly those transporting macronutrients(C,N,and P)that constitute the vast majority of the members of this *** MFS families remain less explored,although a plethora of additional substrates and physiological functions have been ***,the lack of a systematic approach to analyzing the MFS as a whole has obscured the high diversity and versatility of these ***,we present a phylogenetic analysis of all annotated MFS domaincontaining proteins encoded in the Arab/dops/s fA?a//ana genome and propose that this superfamily of transporters consists of 218 members,clustered in 22 *** reviewing the available information regarding the diversity in biological functions and substrates of Arab/dops/s MFS members,we provide arguments for intensified research on these membrane transporters to unveil the breadth of their physiological relevance,disclose the molecular mechanisms underlying their mode of action,and explore their biotechnological potential.

Mechanisms and consequences of COVID-19 associated liver injury: What can we affirm?

Since the first reports of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)cases in December 2019 in China,numerous papers have been published describing a high frequency of liver injury associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection,many of them proposing a link between these findings and patient *** in serum aminotransferase levels(ranging from 16%to 62%)and bilirubin levels(ranging from 5%to 21%)have been reported and seem to be more often observed in patients with severe forms of *** absolute changes in these parameters are frequently seen,other variables,such as the ratio above the upper limit of normal,the onset of liver injury as a complication in severe cases and histopathological findings,reinforce that liver changes are of dubious clinical relevance in the course of this *** factors must also be considered in these analyses,such as the repercussions of hemodynamic changes,the presence of thrombotic events,and,mainly,the possible drug-induced liver injury with the current,yet off-label,*** paper aimed to analyze the currently available data on liver injury in patients with COVID-19.

Robotic cardiac surgery training during residency: Preparing residents for the inevitable future

Unlike other surgical residency training programs including thoracic surgery, robotic cardiac surgery skilltraining is minimal or absent in residency curricula. A review was conducted to identify residents'exposure to robotic cardiac surgery training based on databases including PubMed, MEDLINE and GoogleScholar. Published papers and cardiothoracic surgical societies with robotic cardiac surgery trainingcourses were reviewed. Robotic cardiac surgery training for residents is almost non-existent. Strategies toestablish proper robotic cardiac surgical training for residents include implementing simulation training,implementing hour requirements and establishing wet/dry lab model training in a progressive *** robot-assisted cardiac surgery becomes increasingly commonplace, it will be imperative to providetraining for residents with dedicated opportunities to develop their skills in robotic cardiac surgery.

The Colider and Roosevelt olcanic rocks (sw amazonian craton): geochemistry and sm-nd isotope characteristics of a silicic large igneous province

The volcanic rocks of the Colíder and Roosevelt formations are extensively exposed in the south-central portion of the Amazonian Craton where effusive and pyroclastic rocks have been *** units,topped by chemical sediments and oceanic facies as rhyolite and andesite lavas,rhyodacite,and porphyritic dacite,with frequent intercalations of pyroclastic and epiclastic ***-rock geochemistry for 55 samples of rhyolitic to andesitic composition suggests the involvement of fertile mantle-derived components with E-MORB to OIB *** analyzed rocks display calc-alkaline to shoshonitic affinity consistent with generation related to an active continental *** whole-rock Sm-Nd isotope data from selected felsic volcanic rocks of the Colíder and Roosevelt formations yield negative initial eNd values between–3 and–9,indicating the predominantly crustal nature of the parental magmas with early Archean to late Paleoproterozoic(ca.2.5–2.0 Ga)depleted mantle model ages.
