Air pollution is a global health threat and causes millions of human deaths annually. The late onset of respiratory diseases in children and adults due to prenatal or perinatal exposure to air pollutants is emerging as a critical concern in human health. Pregnancy and fetal development stages are highly susceptible to environmental exposure and tend to develop a long-term impact in later life. In this review, we briefly glance at the direct impact of outdoor and indoor air pollutants on lung diseases and pregnancy disorders. We further focus on lung complications in later life with early exposure to air pollutants. Epidemiological evidence is provided to show the association of prenatal or perinatal exposure to air pollutants with various adverse birth outcomes, such as preterm birth, lower birth weight, and lung developmental defects, which further associate with respiratory diseases and reduced lung function in children and adults. Mechanistic evidence is also discussed to support that air pollutants impact various cellular and molecular targets at early life, which link to the pathogenesis and altered immune responses related to abnormal respiratory functions and lung diseases in later life.

Modeling of bistatic scattering from an underwater non-penetrable target using a Kirchhoff approximation method

A numerical triangulation and transformation into the time domain of a Kirchhoff approximation(KA)method is proposed for the modeling of bistatic scattering from an underwater non-penetrable *** time domain solution in this approximation can be split up into two parts:the solution of reflected field,contributing around the specular direction,and the solution of shadow radiation,contributing around the forward *** average solution in the time domain satisfying the reciprocity principle is *** solution is expressed in terms of non-singular *** proposed method is validated against a normal mode method for bistatic scattering from a rigid ***,the reflected and shadow highlights on the surface of the sphere are shown to verify the integration surface of the reflected field and shadow *** is also tested against a finite element method and an experiment involving a scaled Benchmark Target Strength Simulation Submarine *** time-angle bistatic spectra for the model are evaluated by the direct and transformed average solutions of KA,and the former accelerates its speed of *** results are good,and show that this method can be used to predict the bistatic scattered field of a non-penetrable target.

Air pollution is a world public health problem. Particulate matter (PM), a mix of solid and liquid particles in the air, becomes an increasing concern in the social and economic development of China. For decades, epidemiological studies have confirmed the association between fine particle pollutants and respiratory diseases. It has been reported in different populations that increased fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations cause elevated susceptibility to respiratory diseases, including acute respiratory distress, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and lung cancer. This review will discuss the pathophysiology of PM2.5 in res-piratory diseases, which are helpful for the prevention of air pollution and treatment of respiratory tract inflammatory diseases.

AIM:To synthesize antisense oligonucleotides (ASODNs) of midkine (MK), package the ASODNs with nanoparticles, and to inhibit hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) growth using these ***: HepG2 cell proliferation was analyzed in vitro using the 3-(4,5-dimethythiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2Htetrazolium, inner salt assay. The in vivo activity of nanoparticles delivering the MK-ASODNs was analyzed by histopathological and immunohistochemical staining and quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). RESULTS: The in vitro proliferation of HepG2 cells was signif icantly inhibited by the nanoparticles packaged with MK-ASODNs (NANO-ASODNs). furthermore, the NANO- ASODNs signif icantly inhibited the growth of HCC in the mouse model. CONCLUSION: NANO-ASODNs can significantly suppress the growth of HCC in vitro and in vivo.

The health impact of airborne particulate matter (PM) has long been a concern to clinicians, biologists, and the general public. With many epidemiological studies confirming the association of PM with allergic respiratory diseases, an increasing number of follow-up empirical studies are being conducted to investigate the mechanisms underlying the toxic effects of PM on asthma and allergic rhinitis. In this review, we have briefly introduced the characteristics of PM and discussed its effects on public health. Subsequently, we have focused on recent studies to elucidate the association between PM and the allergic symptoms of human respiratory diseases. Specifically, we have discussed the mechanism of action of PM in allergic respiratory diseases according to different subtypes: coarse PM (PM2.5-10), fine PM (PM2.5), and ultrafine PM.

BACKGROUND Based on the location and size of the fracture block,open reduction and internal fixation can be employed or assisted for shoulder arthroscopy in the treatment of glenoid ***,the treatment of lower part of glenoid fractures through a novel axillary approach has not been reported so *** SUMMARY A 22-year-old right-handed man was transferred to our outpatient clinic because of right shoulder injury during a traffic accident.X-ray examination after admission suggested the fracture of the lower part of the right glenoid and an ipiselial proximal humeral ***-dimensional(3D)computed tomography(CT)further suggested that the size of the fracture block of the lower part of the right glenoid was 3.4 mm×16.2 *** patient was diagnosed as the fracture of the lower part of the glenoid,also known as bony Bankart lesion without shoulder *** general anesthesia,the patient was surgically treated with the open reduction internal fixation through a novel axillary approach.3D CT and shoulder joint function were reexamined at 12 mo of followup,showing acceptable *** This case report describes a novel axillary approach adopted in an open reduction with cannulated screw and wire anchor internal *** a follow-up for more than 12 mo,3D CT and shoulder joint function examinations display a good recovery.

The cell nucleus is the main site for the storage and replication of genetic material, and the synthesis of substances in the nucleus is rhythmic, regular and strictly regulated by physiological processes. However,whether exogenous substances, such as nanoparticles, can be synthesized in situ in the nucleus of live cells has not been reported. Here, we have achieved in-situ synthesis of CdSxSe1-xquantum dots（QDs） in the nucleus by regulation of the glutathione（GSH） metabolic pathway. High enrichment of GSH in the nucleus can be accomplished by the addition of GSH with the help of the Bcl-2 protein. Then, high-valence Se is reduced to low-valence Se by glutathione-reductase-catalyzed GSH, and interacts with the Cd precursor formed through Cd and thiol-rich proteins, eventually generating QDs in the nucleus. Our work contributes to a new understanding of the syntheses of substances in the cell nucleus and will pave the way for the development of advanced ‘supercells’.
