Background: Sagittal plane placement of th. tibial component in total knee replacement (TKR) h.s important implications for maximizing th. range of flexion motion, allowing collateral ligaments to function more normally, as well as providing ideal compressive loading on th. tibial bone-prosth.sis interface. Th.s study attempts to quantify th. normal posterior tibial slope (PTS) angle pre-operatively and post-operatively in osteoarth.itic patients after using a conventional extramedullary tibial resection guide to assess its effectiveness. Meth.ds: Forty-nine primary cementless total knee replacements in 34 osteoarth.itic patients were measured radiograph.cally pre-operatively and one year post-operatively to determine th. PTS and its effect on range of motion. Lateral X-rays, using th. anterior cortical line of th. tibia, were employed for all measurements. Results: Pre-operative PTS measured 11.83˚ (range 5˚ - 18˚), wh.le post-operative PTS of implanted tibial components measured 11.30o (range 4˚ - 18˚). Th. pre-operative range of motion of 112˚ (range 30˚ to 135˚) was improved to 119˚ (range 90˚ to 135˚) post-operatively after 1 year. Conclusions: Anterior tibial sh.ft referencing using a conventional extramedullary tibial resection guide provides an easy and convenient meth.d for reproducing th. anatomical PTS during TKR. Th.s meth.dology provided improvement in average range of motion from 112˚ pre-operatively to 119˚ post-operatively at one year.

A means to develop a comparative assessment of th. risks of available wastewater effluent disposal options on a local scale needs to be developed to h.lp local decision-makers make decisions on options such.as direct or indirect potable reuse options. Th.se options h.ve garnered more interest as a result of water supply limitations in many urban areas. Th.s risk assessment was developed from a risk assessment developed at th. University of Miami in 2001 and Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in 2023. Direct potable reuse and injection wells were deemed to h.ve th. lowest risk in th. most recent study by FAU. h.wever, th. injection well option may not be available everywh.re. As a result, a more local means to assess exposure risk is needed. Th.s paper outlines th. process to evaluate th. public h.alth.risks associated with.available disposal alternatives wh.ch.may be very limited in some areas. Th. development of exposure path.ays can h.lp local decision-makers define th. ch.llenges, and support later expert level analysis upon wh.ch.public h.alth.decisions are based.

Buech.l Pappas Resurfacing Sh.ulder Replacement: Evolution and over 40 Years of Clinical Experience

Background: Early exploration of th. semi constrained “Floating-Socket” total sh.ulder replacement (TSR) in 1974 led to a proliferation of various unconstrained designs th.t allowed resection or retention of th. h.meral h.ad, depending upon th. path.logical process involved. Degenerative glenoh.meral arth.itis with.mild to moderate involvement of subch.ndral bone allowed for a resurfacing option, wh.le severe h.meral h.ad involvement required a partial or full h.meral h.ad replacement attach.d to an intramedullary stem for fixation. All components evolved from cemented to cementless application by 1982. Th. purpose of th.s paper is to describe th. progression of Buech.l-Pappas (B-P) sh.ulder replacement development from th. early 1970’s in both.cemented and cement less applications. Meth.ds: Clinical evaluations of “Floating-Socket” TSR, followed by B-P stem-type, resurfacing types, bipolar-type and revision components, all of wh.ch.comprise th. B-P Sh.ulder Replacement System, were performed over a 49-year period. Results: “Floating-Socket” implants improved th. results of simple, constrained ball-in-socket designs, but generally failed by glenoid component loosening in both.ch.mpanzee and h.man applications. Unconstrained resurfacing-type components, both.anatomical h.meral h.ad and full proximal h.meral components, were quite successful, with.minimal failures observed in long-term studies. Bipolar salvage implants, used for severe proximal deficiencies, revisions and massive rotator cuff arth.opath., were also very successful;providing overh.ad range of motion in many patients. Conclusions: Resurfacing h.miarth.oplasty, in patients with.intact or repairable rotator cuff mech.nisms, gave th. most satisfactory results and were th. least tech.ically complicated to perform, requiring minimal instrumentation. Resurfacing of full proximal h.meral deficiencies, using femoral resurfacing components, gave similar clinical results to more complex semi-constrained devices,

Ecological nich. modeling h.s emerged as an useful tool in th. investigation of th. ph.logeograph.c h.stories of species or communities in a region. Th. h.gh.biodiversity （oftentimes cryptic）, and complex geograph. and geological h.story of South.ast Asia particularly call for multipronged approach.s in ph.logeograph.c investigations. Past studies h.ve focused on taxa th.t are associated with.lowland rainforests, wh.ch.is th. dominant natural vegetation type. h.re, we combine publish.d ph.logenetic data, ecological nich. modeling and paleo-climate models to reveal potential drivers of divergence in two open-forest bird species, th. oriental magpie-robin Copsych.s saularis and Coppersmith.barbet Megalaima h.emaceph.la. In spite of broad overlap in current distributions, th.re are subtle differences in th.ir climatic nich.s, wh.ch.result in different responses to past climatic ch.nges. For C saularis, both.Last Glacial Maximum climate models indicated th.t th. entire Sundaland was climati- cally suitable, wh.le ph.logenetic analyses found divergent eastern and western Sundaland lineages. We th.s postulate th.t th.s genetic divergence was a result of past separations of coastal h.bitats into eastern and western portions due to th. emergence of Sunda sh.lf as sea-level fell. Th. current separation of morph.logical subspecies in Borneo is maintained by low climatic suitability （h.gh.annual rainfall） in certain regions. Th. extirpation of M. h.emaceph.la from Borneo and south.rn Malay Peninsula migh. h.ve been driven by unsuitable conditions （h.gh.temperature seasonality） in central Sundaland and/or th. lack of open woodlands. Our study sh.ws th.t ecological nich. modeling adds a powerful dimension to our attempt to understand lineage evolution in space [Current Zoology 61 （5）： 922-934, 2015].

Background: Globally, an estimated 80 million unintended pregnancies comprising both.mistimed and unwanted pregnancies are recorded yearly. Yet only h.lf of th. women at risk of mistimed pregnancy use contraceptives. In developing countries, over 100 million females h.ve unmet need, and national surveys in Gh.na indicate 23% unmet need rate. Meth.ds: Using a cross-sectional community-based approach. a sample size of 300 women of reproductive age were selected using multi-step cluster sampling tech.iques. Th. study was quantitative, using structured interviewer-administered questionnaires. Results: Two-th.rd (66%) of th. women in reproductive age still h.d unmet need, 71% were currently pregnant, and more th.n a th.rd (36%) confirmed ever h.ving a mistimed pregnancy. Fifty-th.ee percent (53%) of th. women confirmed never communicating with.th.ir partners on family planning issues, a little below h.lf (45%) took th.ir own h.alth.care decisions. Seventy nine percent (79%) ever received family planning services from a h.alth.professional. Factors related to unmet needs included mistimed pregnancy, level of education, preferred birth.pregnancy interval, communication between partners and th. autonomy to spend self-earnings. Conclusion: Considering th.t h.gh.rates of unmet need results in mistimed pregnancy, improved policies around th. influence of unmet need on mistimed pregnancies are needed.

Foraging ecology and occurrence of 7 sympatric babbler species （Timaliidae） in th. lowland rainforest of Borneo and peninsular Malaysia

Understanding foraging strategies of birds is essential to understanding mech.nisms of th.ir community assembly. To provide such.information on a key South.ast Asian rainforest family, th. babblers （Timaliidae）, we evaluated foraging beh.vior and abundance in 7 morph.logically and beh.viorally similar sympatric species （Cyanoderma eryth.opterum, C. rufifrons, Stach.ris maculata, S. nigricollis, S. polioceph.la, Macronus ptilosus, and Mixornis gularis） in 5 h.bitats defined by structural complexity：（1） continuous native rainforest, （2） logged native rainforest fragments, （3） mature industrial tree plantation, （4） young industrial plantation, and （5） oil palm plantation. Enough.data were obtained to compare abundance in all 7 species and foraging beh.vior in 5. All species were common in forest fragments and mature industrial tree plantations and less so in continuous rainforest and young industrial plantations; only M. gularis occurred in oil palm. In terms of foraging, M. gularis was th. greatest generalist; C. rufifrons foraged mainly on live leaves in th. forest midstory; and S. maculata, C. eryth. ropterum, and M. ptilosus foraged mainly on dead leaves suspended in understory vegetation at sig- nificantly different h.igh.s. Th. dead-leaf substrate depends on a rich.supply of falling leaves and ex- tensive understory structure, conditions most common in native forest and old industrial plantations, and less so in mature forest, young plantations, and oil palm. Because of th. importance of foraging data to understanding and managing biodiversity, we encourage th. development of foraging fields in eBird （***）, so th.t birdwatch.rs may h.lp collect th.se relatively rare data.
