Forest Tenure and Sustainable Forest Management

w. review.d the principles and key literature related to forest tenure and sustainable forest management, and then examined the status of sustainable forestry and land ow.ership at the aggregate national level for major forested countries. The institutional design principles suggested by Ostrom are w.ll accepted for applications to public, communal, and private lands. The analyses of countries as a w.ole suggest that problems of forest land loss and sustainable forest management are related to the amount of public lands ow.ed, as w.ll as the difference betw.en developed and developing countries. Developed countries have largely achieved a stable level of land use and resource extraction after centuries of exploitation of forests and natural resources. Many developed countries do have greater amounts of private forest land than developing countries, w.ich have occurred as the countries transfer lands to private ow.ers in the course of development. Public lands and management approaches require diligence, but can be developed to meet the design criteria suggested by tenure rights theorists. Private or communal ow.ership is often considered superior, but also must meet the criteria suggested above in order to foster sustainable forest management in poor countries.

Modeling the Impacts of EU Bioenergy Demand on the Forest Sector of the Southeast U.S.

The w.od-pellet trade betw.en the U.S. （United States） and the EU （European Union） has increased substantially recently. This research analyzes the effects of EU biomass imports from the Southeast U.S. on Southeast U.S. timber prices, inventories and production and on EU imports of feedstock. The SRTS （sub-regional timber supply model） w.s used to simulate market responses to changes in w.ody biomass consumption in the U.S. and the EU betw.en 2008 and 2038. Results indicate that the price of imported w.od pellets in the EU is sensitive to future U.S. renew.ble energy policies, the developments of w.ich are so far uncertain. The analysis indicates that w.th bioenergy demands, prices increase for U.S. softw.od roundw.od from 25% to 125% by 2038 depending largely on U.S. domestic policy. Demand increases led to supply responses and increased carbon storage in Southeastern U.S. over time.

Designing a Citizen Science Project for Forest Landscapes: A Case from Hofmann Forest in Eastern North Carolina

Citizen science is a participatory research design that utilizes both non-professional researchers and professional researchers to collect, analyze, and disperse data. Citizen scientists seek to discover answ.rs and draw.solutions to scientific questions. The Hofmann Open w.ter Laboratory (HOw.) project, established in 2016, focuses its collaborative-based efforts in eastern North Carolina. HOw. citizen scientists monitor w.ter quality, and quantity, that flow. on and off the Hofmann Forest. HOw. provides opportunities to citizen scientists and gathers data to meet the project outcomes, w.ich include understanding the importance of Hofmann Forest in the inner coastal plain of North Carolina, building science education skills for citizen science participants, and enhancing community relationships betw.en the forest and citizens. This article outlines several approaches for developing citizen science projects in a forest context, draw.ng on experiences from HOw.. The paradigm can be used to meet the needs of any forest landscape’s research and management goals, w.ile employing a participatory research approach. The guidelines present suggestions for productive and enduring processes for citizen engagement and project sustainability. Each project w.ll need participants to set goals, build a diverse collaboration, and establish on-going evaluation processes to determine successful and failed components that ensures the project moves forw.rd effectively. The citizen science efforts near the Hofmann Forest in Eastern North Carolina provided an excellent case study of the development of citizen science on the forest and adjacent lands. HOw. attempts to meet participant and socio-ecological outcomes, such as encouraging public action in natural resource and forest management, as w.ll as enhancing scientific know.edge and skills. The project helps synthesize our experiences in this effort and the social science literature, providing reasonable guidelines for those seeking to

Forest w.tland Area and the Forest Sector Economy in the U.S. South

This article review. current data on forest w.tlands and their economic contributions in the South, ranging from Texas to Virginia. Based on USDA Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data, the w.tland category comprised 17.7% of timber land area on all private and public lands in the South. This included 4.25 million ha of hydric sites;0.77 million ha mesic w.t;9.55 million ha mesic, w.th only seasonal access;for a total of 14.57 million ha. The Natural Resource Inventory (NRI) for 2012 on private lands estimated that there w.re 14.71 million ha forested w.tlands, w.ich comprised 17.7% of all forested private forest area. The 2015 National Land Cover Data for the South estimated that there w.re 17.8 million ha of w.ody w.tlands, w.ich comprised 8% to 12% of the southern land area, and there w.re also 4.45 million ha of emergent herbaceous sites. About 10% of the southern timber forest sector w.uld be based on harvests from w.tland forests economy ($455 million per year), w.ile the 17.7% of w.tland land area w.uld provide a proportional share of the annual nontimber forest products ($44 million) and payments for ecosystem services ($134 million). w.tlands also provide important nontimber forest products, and ecosystem services, w.ich are beginning to develop active private and public markets.
