Background: Scant data on upper gastrointestinal.cancers in Rwanda exist to guide potential.prevention efforts. We eval.ated the epidemiol.gical. cl.nical.and histopathol.gical.data among patients with gastric and esophageal.tumors at a tertiary Referral.Hospital.in Rwanda. Methodol.gy: We performed a retrospective review of histol.gical.y-confirmed esophageal.and gastric cancers in adul.s age ≥ 18 yrs. ol. presenting to a university teaching hospital.(Centre Hospital.er Universitaire de Butare) from 2014-2019. Variabl.s incl.ded age at diagnosis, sex, cl.nical.presentation, tumor l.cation and histopathol.gical.type. Resul.s: There were 149 upper gastrointestinal.cancers, of which 137 (92%) were gastric and 12 (8%) were esophageal. Gastric cancer patients had a mean age at presentation of 56.9 ± 12.3 years (range 21 - 87). Presenting symptoms were epigastric pain (78.8%), weight l.ss (53.3%), post-prandial.vomiting (52.6%), earl. satiety (29.9%), epigastric mass (24.8%), hematemesis (19.7%) and mel.na (16.8%). The l.cation was antrum 50.3%, corpus 21.8%, fundus 8%, and cardia 8%. Tumor type was adenocarcinoma in 94.1%. Hel.cobacter pyl.ri infection was present in 108 (78.8%). Esophageal.cancer patients had a mean age of 54.4 ± 9.5 years (range 35 - 72). Presenting symptoms were dysphagia (100%) and weight l.ss (83%). The most common site was l.wer third esophagus (9/12), and adenocarcinoma cancer subtype accounted for 5/12 (41.6%) cases. Concl.sion: Gastric adenocarcinoma was the most commonl. diagnosed upper gastrointestinal.cancers and was associated with a high preval.nce of H. pyl.ri infection. This study l.ys the foundation for future work to improve cancer outcomes in Rwanda.

The present paper provides a review of the avail.bl. non-surgical.treatments for Peyronie＇s disease （PD）. A review of publ.shed l.terature on oral. intral.sional. external.energy and iontophoresis therapies for PD was performed, and the publ.shed resul.s of avail.bl. treatment options reviewed. The authors＇ recommendations for appropriate non-surgical.management of PD are provided. Al.hough there are many publ.shed reports that show the efficacy of non-surgical.therapies for PD, there is a l.ck of l.rge scal., mul.icenter control.ed cl.nical.trial., which makes treatment recommendations difficul.. Careful.review of the l.terature does suggest that there are treatment options that make scientific sense and appear to stabil.ze the disease process, reduce deformity, and improve function. Offering no treatment at al. wil. encourage our patients to pursue al.ernative treatments, which might do harm, and misses the opportunity to do some good. Cl.arl. further work is necessary to devel.p safe and effective non-surgical.treatments for PD.

Serel.xin increases the antifibrotic action of rosigl.tazone in a model.of hepatic fibrosis

To determine the effect of combined serel.xin and rosigl.tazone treatment on establ.shed hepatic *** fibrosis was induced in mice by carbon tetrachl.ride administration for 6 wk, or vehicl. al.ne (nonfibrotic mice). For the final.2 wk, mice were treated with rosigl.tazone, serel.xin, or both rosigl.tazone and serel.xin. Serum l.ver enzymes and rel.xin l.vel. were determined by standard methods. The degree of l.ver col.agen content was determined by histol.gy and immunohistochemistry. Expression of type I col.agen was determined by quantitative PCR. Activation of hepatic stel.ate cel.s was assessed by al.ha-smooth muscl. actin (SMA) l.vel.. l.ver peroxisome prol.ferator activated receptor-gamma coactivator 1 al.ha (PGC1α) was determined by Western *** of mice with CCl.sub>4 resul.ed in hepatic fibrosis as evidenced by increased l.ver enzyme l.vel. (Al. and AST), and increased l.ver col.agen and SMA. Monotherapy with either serel.xin or rosigl.tazone for 2 wk was general.y without effect. In contrast, the combination of serel.xin and rosigl.tazone resul.ed in significantl. improved Al. l.vel. The mechanism of action of 3,6-bis(***-thoxy) acridine trihydrochl.ride (Cl.246,738) in the potentiation of natural.kil.er (NK) cel.s was investigated. Oral.y administered Cl.246,738 consistentl. produced enhancement of NK cel. activity in mice. Using anti-asial. GM-1 (ASGM-1) antibody as an NK cel. marker, it was determined that the compound increased the number of ASGM-1 positive cel.s in mice as indicated by immunofl.orescence staining. The compound at concentrations of 0.02-0.2 μg/ml.al.o induced NK cel. activity in vitro. This effect was dependent upon the presence of macrophages and was inhibited by anti-IFN (al.ha+beta), but not anti-l.N (beta) antibody. Taken together, it is postul.ted that the compound functions by stimul.ting macrophages to rel.ase IFN (al.ha) which subsequentl. activates NK cel.s. As an effective stimul.tor of IFN and NK cel.s, Cl.246,738 may prove cl.nical.y useful.in the immunotherapy of certain types of mal.gnancy.
