Intrinsic Photoconductivity of Few-layered ZrS2 Phototransistors via Multiterminal Measurements

We report intrinsic photoconductivity studies on one of the least examined layered compounds,***-atomic layer ZrS2 field-effect transistors were fabricated on the Si/SiO2 substrate and photoconductivity measurements were performed using both two-and four-terminal configurations under the illumination of 532 nm laser *** measured photocurrent as a function of the incident optical power at several source-drain(bias)*** observe a significantly large photoconductivity when measured in the multiterminal(four-terminal)configuration compared to that in the two-terminal *** an incident optical power of 90 nW,the estimated photosensitivity and the external quantum efficiency(EQE)measured in two-terminal configuration are 0.5 A/W and 120%,respectively,under a bias voltage of 650 *** the same conditions,the four-terminal measurements result in much higher values for both the photoresponsivity(R)and EQE to 6 A/W and 1400%,*** significant improvement in photoresponsivity and EQE in the four-terminal configuration may have been influenced by the reduction of contact resistance at the metal-semiconductor interface,which greatly impacts the carrier mobility of low conducting *** suggests that photoconductivity measurements performed through the two-terminal configuration in previous studies on ZrS2 and other 2D materials have severely underestimated the true intrinsic properties of transition metal dichalcogenides and their remarkable potential for optoelectronic applications.

Canada’s inter-agency wild bird influenza survey

Canada’s Inter-agency Wild Bird Influenza Survey,which started in 2005,and is a collaborative effort among federal,provincial and territorial government agencies as well as non-governmental organizations and academic institutions,has two components:(i)a seasonal survey of live wild waterfowl species from selected geographic regions across Canada(to expand our understanding of the avian influenza viruses circulating in wild bird populations);and(ii)an ongoing survey of birds found dead that are submitted to a regional diagnostic laboratory(to enhance detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza strains).Combined swabs from the cloaca and oro-pharynx collected from each bird are screened using a real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction(RRT-PCR)that targets a unique segment of the influenza A M1 *** the M1 result is positive or inconclusive,RRT-PCR for gene segments of the H5 and H7 hemagglutinin subtypes are *** samples that are RRT-PCR positive for H5 or H7 are sent immediately for test confirmation and further *** field and laboratory data are entered into a database developed and maintained by the Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health *** the survey commenced in 2005,on average,30%of all live ducks sampled,5%of other species of live birds and 3%of birds found dead have tested positive for avian influenza,all of North American lineage and of low pathogenicity.

Wastewater Quality Assessment of a Petroleum Refinery in Ghana

TOR （Tema oil refinery） is the only petroleum refinery in Ghana. To assess the quality of the wastewater, wastewater samples taken from three points of discharge into the treatment plant and the treated effluent were analyzed for physico-chemical characteristics. The levels of the pH, temperature, conductivity, COD （Chemical Oxygen Demand）, TDS （Total Dissolved Solids）, TSS （Total Suspended Solids） and phenol were assessed from January to June, 2011. The results obtained indicate varied levels of contaminants in both the untreated and treated wastewater. The average values of the treated effluent parameters analyzed were 38 ℃, 6,258 μ***-1, 314 mg-L-1, 115 mg.L-1, 2,689 mg-L-1 and 1 mg.L-1 for the temperature, conductivity, COD, TDS, TSS and phenol, respectively. The results suggest that both the raw wastewater and the treated effluent did not meet the discharge limit set by Ghana Environmental Protection Agency. Therefore, the treated effluent required additional treatment before it can be discharged into the environment. This suggests that the wastewater treatment plant of TOR is ineffective for the type of wastewater produced.

Bacterial Contamination of Blood and Blood Products at Mbarara Regional Blood Bank in Rural South Western Uganda

Background: Screening blood donors has practically eliminated viral and bacterial pathogens in blood used for transfusion. However, transfusion-associated bacterial sepsis remains an important health-care concern and the commonest cause of transfusion-related fatality in resource limited settings. Data on bacterial contamination of blood are scarce while the demand of blood transfusion is continuously growing. Therefore we conducted a study to determine the prevalence and type of bacterial contamination in donor blood and blood products, at the Mbarara Regional Blood Bank. Methodology: A total of 510 units of screened blood and blood products consisting of refrigerated whole blood and packed cells were randomly sampled following aseptic procedures from Mbarara Regional Blood Bank. Two samples from each unit were collected in universal containers containing Brain Heart Infusion Broth and incubated at 37℃ for up to 7 days. Subcultures were carried out on Blood agar, Chocolate agar and MacConkey agar. Isolates were identified by standard microbiologic techniques and drug susceptibility testing was performed by Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method. Results: Of the 510 samples collected between June and October 2012, 18 (3.5%) samples showed growth. The contaminants were Staphylococcus aureus 17/18 (94.4%) and Streptococcus viridans 1/18 (5.6%). Isolates were sensitive to erythomycin, ampicillin, chloramphenicol and ciprofloxacin and resistant to penicillin and cloxacillin. Conclusion: Blood and blood products from Mbarara Regional Blood have unacceptable levels of bacterial contamination that can affect patient safety especially in an area with high malaria endemicity. Therefore it is critical to improve hygiene precautions in order to minimize bacterial contamination and ensure patient safety.

Optical Properties of Laterally Aligned Si Nanowires for Transparent Electronics Applications

We have investigated the optical properties of laterally aligned Si nanowire （SiNW） arrays in order to explore their potential applicability in transparent electronics. The SiNW array exhibited good optical transparency in the visible spectral range with a transmittance of -90% for a NW density of -20-25 per 10 μm. In addition, polarization-dependent measurements revealed a variation in transmittance in the range of 80%-95% depending on the angle between the polarization of incident light and the NW axis. Using the SiNWs, we demonstrated that transparent transistors exhibit good optical transparency （greater than 80%） and showed typical p-type SiNW transistor characteristics.

Association of Acid-Base Balance in the Renal Proximal Tubule and Blood Pressure Alterations: Potential Role of Local Mediators

Disturbances in acid-base balance leading to the development of hypertension are currently gaining increased attention among researchers. Perturb acid-base balance characterized by metabolic acidosis has been demonstrated in hypertensive animals and humans. Research suggests that acid-base changes are not only the consequences of elevated blood pressure but can precede the development of hypertension. However, no exact mechanism has been identified to link acid-base imbalance with alterations in blood pressure. The kidney proximal tubule is the major site for maintaining normal bicarbonate concentrations which is an important component of acid-base balance. Acid-base transporter proteins in the renal proximal tubule such as Na+/HCO-3?cotransporters, Na+/H+ exchangers, and anion-exchangers play important roles in controlling acid secretion, ammonia production and bicarbonate reabsorption for maintaining acid-base balance. It is well known that sodium retention in the renal tubules leads to increase in blood volume and consequently increases in blood pressure. Therefore, it is the purpose of this review to discuss the role of sodium-coupled acid-base transporters in regulating proximal tubular sodium retention and controlling blood pressure homeostasis. We will also focus on the capacity of local mediators;angiotensin ii, cortisol, prosta-glandin and aldosterone, to regulate acid-base and blood pressure homeostasis.

Background:Pediatric cardiology patients often experience decreased quality of life(QoL)and higher rates of mental illness,particularly with severe disease,but the relationship between them and comparisons across diagnostic groups are *** mixed-methods cross-sectional study assessed the association between QoL anxiety and behavior problems among children with structural heart disease,arrhythmia,or other cardiac ***:Children(6–14 years,n=76,50%female)and their parents completed measures of QoL(PedsQL),behavior(BASC-2,subset of 19 children)and anxiety(MASC-2,children 8+years).Pearson correlations/regression models examined associations between QoL,behavior and anxiety,controlling for age,sex,diagnosis and condition *** t-tests compared results to published normative ***-structured interviews(15 children,13 parents)examined self-and parent-reported perceptions of the patient’s emotional ***:Child reported social QoL(95%CI difference:−11.0,−2.1),emotional well-being(95%CI difference:−12.5,−3.8)and adjustment skills(95%CI difference:−13.9,−3.0)were significantly below published norms(p<0.05).Neither age,sex,nor diagnosis were significantly related to questionnaire *** to children with mild conditions,child and parent-reported QoL was significantly lower in children with complex conditions(np2≥0.14,p<0.05).Lower QoL was strongly associated with more internalizing problems based on both child(r=−0.78,p<0.001)and parent(r=−0.67,p<0.001)*** responses suggested emotional distress was attributed to“normal”child problems rather than the child’s cardiac ***:Children with complex cardiac conditions,regardless of diagnosis,had diminished *** the PedsQL in clinical settings may help identify pediatric cardiology patients experiencing emotional distress(i.e.,anxiety and depression).

Our work is a retrospective study from the year 2010 November until June 2016,it covers 517 patients who were consulted and diagnosed positive for cancer of the endometrium in the Department of Gynecology of the first affiliated hospital of Chongqing Medical ***: To determine the efficiency of biomarkers or preoperative features to predict type ii endometrial cancer（EC）***: 517 patients with EC admitted and undergone surgery in our hospital from November 2010 to June 2016 was *** serum CA125,HE4,CA19-9 and CK19 were measured by electrochemiluminescence immunoassay and ROMA（Risk of Ovarian Malignancy Algorithm）index was ***:（1）Tumor diameter≥2cm（P=0.001,OR=7.020,95%CI 2.202-22.382）and age ＞40 years old（P=0.036,OR=9.646,95%CI 1.155-80.581）were testified to predict the likelihood of type ii EC in premenopausal *** for postmenopausal patients,HE4＞140pmol/L（P=0.004,OR=16.337,95%CI 2.432-109.719）and age ＞60 years old（P=0.006,OR=2.640,95%CI 1.318-5.286）were confirmed independent risk factors of type ii EC.（2）Type ii cancer had a worse PFS and OS than type I ***: Tumor size（≥2cm）or age（＞40 years old）would be an alert for those premenopausal patients who desire preserving *** the other hand,for those postmenopausal patients with preoperative histology undetermined while with HE4 ＞140pmol/L or 60 years or even older,complete and systemic staging surgery should be considered.
