PM_(2.5) source apportionment in a French urban coastal site under steelworks emission influences using constrained non-negative matrix factorization receptor model

The constrained weighted-non-negative matrix factorization（CW-NMF） hybrid receptor model was applied to study the influence of steelmaking activities on PM_（2.5）（particulate matter with equivalent aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 μm） composition in Dunkerque,Northern France. Semi-diurnal PM_（2.5）samples were collected using a high volume sampler in winter 2010 and spring 2011 and were analyzed for trace metals, water-soluble ions, and total carbon using inductively coupled plasma – atomic emission spectrometry（ICP-AES）,ICP- mass spectrometry（ICP-MS）, ionic chromatography and micro elemental carbon analyzer. The elemental composition shows that NO_3^-, SO_4^（2-）, NH_4~＋and total carbon are the main PM_（2.5）constituents. Trace metals data were interpreted using concentration roses and both influences of integrated steelworks and electric steel plant were evidenced. The distinction between the two sources is made possible by the use Zn/Fe and Zn/Mn diagnostic ratios. Moreover Rb/Cr, Pb/Cr and Cu/Cd combination ratio are proposed to distinguish the ISW-sintering stack from the ISW-fugitive emissions. The a priori knowledge on the influencing source was introduced in the CW-NMF to guide the calculation. Eleven source profiles with various contributions were identified： 8 are characteristics of coastal urban background site profiles and 3 are related to the steelmaking activities. Between them,secondary nitrates, secondary sulfates and combustion profiles give the highest contributions and account for 93% of the PM_（2.5）concentration. The steelwork facilities contribute in about 2%of the total PM_（2.5）concentration and appear to be the main source of Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn.

The design of an underground nuclear waste disposal requires a full characterization of concrete under various thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical *** experimental work studied the characterization of coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical effects using concretes made with cement CEM I or CEM V/A(according to European norms).Uniaxial and triaxial compression under 5 MPa conﬁning pressure tests were performed under three dif-ferent temperatures(T=20℃,50℃,and 80℃).The two concretes were dried under relative humidity(RH)to obtain a partially saturated state of approximately 70%.The results showed that the effects of water saturation and conﬁning pressure are more important than that of *** in high RH at different target tempera-tures led to an increase in uniaxial and triaxial strength but drying at 105℃ had a negative effect on the strength and Young’s *** drying caused microcracking in the *** microcracks deeply inﬂuenced the thermal damage to the material,affecting its mechanical *** triaxial strength clearly increased due to the presence of conﬁning ***,an important inﬂuence of cement type was observed on the mechanical properties;the concrete based on CEM V/A had a greater porosity than CEM I,and aﬁner pore struc-ture appeared due to the presence of mineral admixtures.

In this article,natural convection of a temperature-sensitive magnetic fluid in a porous media is studied numerically by using lattice Boltzmann *** show that the heat transfer decreases when the ball numbers *** the magnetic field is increased,the heat transfer is enhanced;however the average wall Nusselt number increases at small ball numbers but decreases at large ball numbers due to the induced flow being more likely confined near the bottom walls with a high number of obstacles.

Coupled hydro-mechanical analysis of expansive soils:Parametric identification and calibration

A methodology for identifying and calibrating the material parameters for a coupled hydro-mechanical problem is presented in this pape *** validation purpose,a laboratory-based water infiltration test was numerically simulated using finite element method(FEM).The test was conducted using a self-designed column-type experimental device,which mimicked the wetting process of a candidate backfill material in a nuclear waste *** real-time measurements of key state variables(*** content,relative humidity,temperature,and total stresses)were performed with the monitoring sensors along the height of cylindrical soil *** numerical simulation,the modified Barcelona Basic Model(BBM)along with soil-water retention model for compacted bentonite was *** shows that the identified model parameters successfully captured the moisture migration process under an applied hydraulic gradient in a bentonite-based compacted soil sample.A comparison between the measured and predicted values of total stresses both in axial and lateral directions along with other state variables revealed that heterogeneous moisture content was distributed along the hydration-path,resulting in non-uniform stress-deformation characteristics of soil.

Low-loss single-mode hybrid-lattice hollow-core photonic-crystal fibre

Remarkable recent demonstrations of ultra-low-loss inhibited-coupling(1C)hollow-core photonic-crystal fibres(HCPCFs)established them as serious candidates for next-generation long-haul fibre optics systems.A hindrance to this prospect and also to short-haul applications such as micromachining,where stable and high-quality beam delivery is needed,is the difficulty in designing and fabricating an IC-guiding fibre that combines ultra-low loss,truly robust single-modeness,and polarisation-maintaining *** design solutions proposed to date require a trade-off between low loss and truly ***,we propose a novel IC-HCPCF for achieving low-loss and effective single-mode *** fibre is endowed with a hybrid cladding composed of a Kagome-tubular lattice(HKT).This new concept of a microstructured cladding allows us to significantly reduce the confinement loss and,at the same time,preserve truly robust single-mode *** results show an HKT-IC-HCPCF with a minimum loss of 1.6dB/km at 1050 nm and a higher-order mode extinction ratio as high as 47.0 dB for a 10 m long *** robustness of the fibre single-modeness is tested by moving the fibre and varying the coupling *** design proposed herein opens a new route for the development of HCPCFs that combine robust ultra-low-loss transmission and single-mode beam delivery and provides new insight into IC guidance.

Radial Supershapes for Solid Modeling

In the previous work, an efficient method has been proposed to represent solid objects as multiple combinations of globally deformed supershapes. In this paper, this framework is applied with a new supershape implicit function that is based on the notion of radial distance and results are presented on realistic models composed of hundreds of hierarchically globally deformed supershapes. An implicit equation with guaranteed differential properties is obtained by simple combinations of the primitives~ implicit representations using R-function theory. The surface corresponding to the zero-set of the implicit equation is efficiently and directly polygonized using the primitives,parametric forms. Moreover, hierarchical global deformations are considered to increase the range of shapes that can be modeled. The potential of the approach is illustrated by representing complex models composed of several hundreds of primitives inspired from CAD models of mechanical parts.

Transcriptome analysis reveals different response of resistant and susceptible rice varieties to rice stripe virus infection

Rice stripe disease,caused by rice stripe virus (RSV) which is transmitted by small brown planthopper (SBPH,Laodelphax striatellus Fallen),resulted in serious losses to rice production during the last 2 *** on the molecular differences between resistant and susceptible rice varieties and the interaction between rice and RSV remains *** this study,RNA-Seq was used to analyze the transcriptomic differences between the resistant and susceptible rice varieties at different times post RSV *** Gene Ontology (GO) annotation,the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to transcription factors,peroxidases,and kinases of 2 varieties at 3 time points were *** these 2 varieties,the DEGs associated with these 3 GOs were numerically less in the resistant variety than in the susceptible variety,but the expression showed a significant up-or down-regulation trend under the conditions of|log_2(Fold change)|>0&P_(adj)<0.05 by significance *** through Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) annotation,DEGs involved in some pathways that have a contribution to disease resistance including plant hormone signal transduction and plant–pathogen interaction were *** results showed that resistance responses regulated by abscisic acid (ABA) and brassinosteroids (BR) were the same for 2 varieties,but that mediated by salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA)/ethylene (ET) were *** DEGs in resistant and susceptible varieties at the 3 time points were identified in both PAMP-triggered immunity (PTI) and Effector proteintriggered immunity (ETI),with that most of the unigenes of the susceptible variety were involved in PTI,whereas most of the unigenes of the resistant variety were involved in *** results revealed the different responses of resistant and susceptible varieties in the transcription level to RSV infection.
