Liver stiffness in pregnant women with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy:A case control study

Synchrotron X-ray microtomography and multifractal analysis for the characterization of pore structure and distribution in softwood pellet biochar

Biochar pores in the micrometer range(1-100μm)derive from cellular structures of the plant biomass subjected to pyrolysis or can be the result of mechanical processing,such as *** this study,synchrotron X-ray microtomography was used to investigate the internal pore structure of softwood pellet biochar produced by slow pyrolysis at 550 and 700°*** microtomographic data sets consisted of 2025 images of 2560×2560 voxels with a voxel side length of 0.87μ*** three-dimensional reconstructions revealed that pelleting and pyrolysis significantly altered the pore structures of the wood feedstock,creating a network of connected pores between fragments that resembled the wood *** higher pyrolysis temperature increased the specific surface area(as determined by BET nitrogen adsorption),it did not affect the total observed *** analysis was applied to assess the characteristics of the frequency distribution of pores along each of the three dimensions of reconstructed images of five softwood pellet biochar *** resulting singular-ity and Rényi spectra(generalized dimensions)indicated that the distribution of porosity had monofractal scaling behavior,was homogeneous within the analyzed volumes and consistent between replicate ***,the pore distributions were isotropic(direction-independent),which is in strong contrast with the anisotropic pore structure of *** pores at the scale analyzed in this study are relevant,for example,for the supply of plant accessible water and habitable space for microorganisms,our findings combined with the ability to reproduce biochar with such pore distribution offer substantial advantages in various biochar applications.

Neurodegenerative diseases are a heterogeneous group of maladies, characterized by progressive loss of neurons. These diseases involve an intricate pattern of cross-talk between different types of cells to maintain specific signaling pathways. A component of such intercellular cross-talk is the exchange of various types of extracellular vesicles (EVs). Exosomes are a subset of EVs, which are increasingly being known for the role they play in the pathogenesis and progression of neurodegenerative diseases, e.g., synucleinopathies and tauopathies. The ability of the central nervous system exosomes to cross the blood-brain barrier into blood has generated enthusiasm in their study as potential biomarkers. However, the lack of standardized, efficient, and ultra-sensitive methods for the isolation and detection of brain-derived exosomes has hampered the development of effective biomarkers. Exosomes mirror heterogeneous biological changes that occur during the progression of these incurable illnesses, potentially offering a more comprehensive outlook of neurodegenerative disease diagnosis, progression and treatment. In this review, we aim to discuss the challenges and opportunities of peripheral biofluid-based brain-exosomes in the diagnosis and biomarker discovery of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. In the later part, we discuss the traditional and emerging methods used for the isolation of exosomes and compare their advantages and disadvantages in clinical settings.

SIRT and Its Unresolved Problems—Is Imaging the Solution? A Review

Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) is used as a treatment option for unresectable liver tumors. In SIRT, microspheres, which have a radioactive substance as an integral component, are placed via image guided catheters into the hepatic artery. The ionizing radiation is directly delivered to the tumor. Currently used commercially available microspheres are based on Yttrium 90, a β-emitter, which has been shown to be safe and to produce good clinical results. The technical features of Y90, their applications and their limitations are presented. Image guidance and intraoperative depiction of Yttrium 90 microspheres are restricted, which is currently one of the main limitations in SIRT. Therapy planning and control is currently based on pre- and post-operative images to evaluate the placement of the microspheres respectively. Holmium 166, another possible nuclide integrated into the microspheres emits a higher amount of secondary γ-radiation (Bremsstrahlung) than Yttrium 90. This enables an improved depiction of the microspheres inside the patient during and immediately after application, but comes with other shortfalls. Imaging of delivery and verification of the microsphere placement could solve many of the identified problems with SIRT. The different technologies are reviewed and an outlook in future developments is given particularly on image guidance and therapy control.

Application of Design of Experiments for AlloyDevelopment of an Aluminum Copper Casting Alloy

Design of experiments (DoE) based on a linear regression model was used to develop an Aluminum Copper-based casting alloy. The main objectives of the development were the achievement of (1) a high strength at elevated temperatures with (2) a low hot tearing tendency. Within the DoE, 17 different chemical compositions of the newly developed alloy AlCuMnCo(Ni) were cast, tested regarding hot tearing tendency and characterized in tensile tests up to 300 °C. Test results showed that the AlCuMnCo(Ni)-alloys from the DoE have high mechanical properties from ambient temperature up to 300 °C and thus feature a high thermal stability. It was found that the alloying elements Cu and Co increase the yield strength whereas Mn and Ni tend to increase the attainable elongation. Furthermore, some of the alloys showed no or a very low tendency to hot tearing a remarkable feature for Al-Cu alloys which are otherwise highly susceptible to hot tearing. The regression model that was developed from the test results fulfils a set of quality criteria and is therefore expected to provide reliable predictions. The predictive ability of the model was validated by casting and testing a sweet spot alloy. Results show that the model is sufficient for predicting the mechanical properties from ambient temperature to 250 °C. Furthermore, the sweet spot alloy surpasses the reference alloy AlCuNiCoSbZr (RR30) in its mechanical properties up to 250 °C. It was shown that by applying design of experiments, time and effort for an alloy development can effectively be reduced and simultaneously a high degree of information density about the alloying system considered is generated.

Syncope as a health risk for soldiers: Influence of medical history and clinical findings on the sensitivity of head-up tilt table testing

Background: Syncope is a relevant health problem in military environments. Reliable diagnosis is challenging. Tilt table testing is an important tool for syncope diagnosis. The aim of this study was to determine whether signs such as prodromal symptoms, co-morbidity, frequency of syncopal events, body length, body mass index, and electrocardiography(ECG) abnormalities can be used to predict the success of tilt table testing at diagnosing ***: Data from 100 patients with histories of syncope or pre-syncope, who were diagnosed using head-up tilt table testing, were retrospectively analyzed in a cross-sectional analysis. The diagnostic procedure was based upon a modified version of the Westminster protocol without any pharmacological provocation. Results: Patients showing pathological reaction patterns during tilt table testing suffered from prodromal symptoms, such as dizziness and sweating, significantly more often. The patients reported more injuries resulting from syncopal events and more previous syncopal events, and the prevalence of co-morbidity was greater among patients presenting negative findings during tilt testing. An asthenic-leptosomal physique was not confirmed as a risk factor for syncopal events as is the case for idiopathic arterial hypotension. However, patients with pathological reaction patterns during tilt table testing were significantly taller. This finding was detected for both females and males. No significant predictors were found in the ECG patterns of patients showing syncope during tilt table ***: Frequency of prior syncope and prodromal symptoms, and increased body length with an otherwise good state of health influence the predictive value of tilt table testing for syncope diagnosis. In particular, if these factors are present, tilt table testing should be considered part of the diagnostic algorithm for soldiers with recurrent syncope.
