Hydroxyapatite(HA)synthesized by a wet chemical route was subjected to heavy ion irradiation,using4 Me V Krypton ion(Kr17+)with ion fluence ranging from 1×1013 to 1×1015 ions/*** incidence X-ray diffraction(GIXRD)results confirmed the phase purity of irradiated HA with a moderate contraction in lattice parameters,and further indicated the irradiation-induced structural disorder,evidenced by broadening of the diffraction ***-resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM)observations indicated that the applied Kr irradiation induced significant damage in the hydroxyapatite ***,cavities were observed with their diameter and density varying with the irradiation fluences,while a radiation-induced crystalline-to-amorphous transition with increasing ion dose was *** and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)analysis further indicated the presence of irradiationinduced *** release from pristine and irradiated materials following immersion in Tris(p H 7.4,37?)buffer showed that dissolution in vitro was enhanced by irradiation,reaching a peak at 0.1 *** examined the effects of irradiation on the early stages of the mouse osteoblast-like cells(MC3 T3-E)response.A cell counting kit-8 assay(CCK-8 test)was carried out to investigate the cytotoxicity of samples,and viable cells can be observed on the irradiated materials.

AIM: To explore dendritic cells (DCs) multiple functions in immune modulation. METHODS: We used bone-marrow derived dendritic cells from BALB/c mice pulsed with pseudo particles from the hepatitis C virus to vaccinate naive BALB/c mice. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) pseudo particles consist of the genotype 1b derived envelope proteins E1 and E2, covering a non-HCV core structure. Thus, not a single epitope, but the whole "viral surface" induces immunogenicity. For vaccination, mature and activated DC were injected subcutaneously twice. RESULTS: Humoral and cellular immune responses measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and interferon-gamma enzyme-linked immunosorbent spot test showed antibody production as well as T-cellsdirected against HCV. Furthermore, T-cell responses confi rmed two highly immunogenic regions in E1 and E2 outside the hypervariable region 1. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate dendritic cells as a promising vaccination model for HCV infection that should be evaluated further.

Background:Acute-onset neurodegenerative diseases in older patients are rare clinical cases,especially when the degeneration only affects specific regions of the nervous *** neurological disorders have been described in which the degeneration of brain parenchyma originates from and/or primarily affects the brain *** diagnosis in these patients,however,is often complicated due to a poor understanding of these diseases and their underlying *** presentation:In this manuscript we report on a 73-year-old female who had experienced a sudden onset of complex neurological symptoms that progressively worsened over a period of 2 *** evaluation had suggested a MRI-negative stroke as underlying *** combination of patient’s medical history,clinical examination and exceptional pattern of brain stem degeneration presenting as“kissing swan sign”in MR imaging was strongly suggestive of acute onset of Alexander’s *** leukoencephalopathy is caused by GFAP(glial fibrilary acidic protein)gene mutations and may present with brain stem atrophy and stroke-like onset of symptoms in elderly ***,a pathognomonic GFAP gene mutation could not be identified by Sanger ***:After an extended differential diagnosis and exclusion of other diseases,a definite diagnosis of the patient’s condition presently remains ***,whole-exome sequencing performed from patient’s blood revealed 12 potentially disease-causative heterozygous variants,amongst which several have been associated with neurological disorders in vitro and in vivo–in particular the axon degeneration-related NMNAT2 gene.

AIM. Pouchitis develops in ileoanal pouches in up to 50% of patients with ulcerative colitis during the first 10 years after pouch surgery while being rare in patients after proctocolectomy for familial adenomatous polyposis coil （FAP） syndrome. Defensins are major components of the innate immune system and play a significant role in gastrointestinal microbial homeostasis. Pouch defensin and cytokine expression were correlated with states of pouch inflammation to study their role in pouchitis.METHODS： Patients with ulcerative colitis and FAP syndrome were stratified into groups with pouches after surgery, pouches without or with pouchitis. Biopsies from terminal ileum from a healthy intestine or from normal terminal ileum of patients with ulcerative colitis served as controls, mRNA from pouches and controls was analysed for defensin and cytokine expression.RESULTS： Expression of defensins was increased in all pouches immediately after surgery, compared to ileum of controls. Initially, pouches in ulcerative colitis revealed higher defensin expression than FAP pouches. Defensin expression declined in both patient groups and increased again slightly in pouchitis in patients with ulcerative colitis. FAP pouches without pouchitis had strong expression of β-defensin hBD-1, while all other defensins remained at low levels. Cytokine expression in ulcerative colitis pouches was high, while FAP pouches showed moderately elevated cytokines only after surgery.CONCLUSION： Development of pouchitis correlates with decreased defensin expression in ulcerative colitis in addition to high expression of cytokines. The low incidence of pouchitis in FAP pouches correlates with increased expression of hBD-1 β- defensin in association with low cytokine levels.
