Large eddy simulation of room fire spread using a medium scale compartment made of medium density fibreboard (MDF) panels

At present,there is a shortage of experimental and simulation studies on fire spread in medium-and large-scale compartments while the existing models of the fire spread are limited for typical engineering *** paper proposes a new model for large-scale fire spread on medium density fibreboard(MDF)*** the model with single burning item(SBI)experiments,it is found that the numerical simulation closely predicts the experimental heat release rate(Hrr)with some error near the *** predicted heat flux and distance of lateral flame spread are consistent with the experiments and an existing *** effects of kinetic properties and heat of combustion are identified through a sensitivity *** decrease of activation energy and increase of pre-exponential factor make the MDF easier to pyrolyze and the increase of heat of combustion enhances the flame temperature and thus provide more heat feedback to the sample *** low activation energy(71.9 kJ/mol)and high heat of combustion(46.5 MJ/kg)of the model ensure the occurrence of flame ***,the model was validated using medium-scale compartment fire experiments and the results showed that the model can accurately predict the Hrr after flashover(the error is within 7%).While the burner is ignited,the predictions of in-compartment gas temperature and heat flux are more ***,when the burner is extinguished,the modelled in-compartment gas temperature is lower than the experimental values,resulting in a lower heat flux *** model leads to easier flame spread;therefore,the modelled flame spreads faster in the compartment compared to the experiment,and thus the Hrr increases more rapidly.

Assessing the impact of non-governmental organization’s extension programs on sustainable cocoa production and household income in Ghana

Globally,cocoa is famous for the production of chocolates and ***,it also serves as a source of raw material for the manufacturing of high-quality cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. Due to its high demand,cocoa is regarded as a major commodity for poverty alleviation in deprived cocoa farming communities. Government has therefore instigated relevant measures to address issues facing the sector by investing in extension programs. These programs act as information dissemination tools for teaching modern farming technologies and enhancing learning among farmers. This study highlighted the effects of the Cocoa Life Project (CLP) by Cooperative for Assistance and relief Everywhere (CArE) International on farm productivity and income of 200 cocoa farmers in three districts of the Eastern region,Ghana. regression on covariates,Heckman’s treatment effects model,and propensity scores were used to test the robustness of the estimates. A positive association between extension program participation,farm productivity,and household income was discovered. Specifically,after correcting for selection bias,the estimated results of the Heckman’s model showed that the extension program significantly increased participating farmers’ cocoa yield by 14.3%. The effects on total farm income showed a significant increase of 25.1 and 42.9%,respectively from regression on propensity scores and the Heckman’s model. Across all three models,program participation led to an increase in total household income by 46.1,31.7,and 69.3%,respectively. Other variables such as farming characteristics,institutional and demographic factors affected farmers’ income,depending on the estimation method used. This study reiterated the supporting role played by extension programs in enhancing cocoa production and increasing household income in Ghana. This study evaluated the effects of heat stress(HS)and dietary nano chromium picolinate(nCrPic)on metabolic responses of sheep to an intravenous glucose tolerance test(IVGTT),an intravenous insulin tolerance test(ITT)and an intramuscular adrenocorticotropin hormone(ACTH)challenge in ***-six sheep housed in metabolic cages were randomly allocated within 3 dietary groups(0,400 and 800 mg/kg supplemental nCrPic)to either thermoneutral(22℃)or cyclic HS(22 to 40℃)conditions for 3 *** plasma glucose tended to be increased during HS(P=0.052)and decreased by dietary nCrPic(P=0.013)while plasma non-esterified fatty acid concentrations were decreased(P=0.010)by ***-etary nCrPic reduced the plasma glucose area under the curve(P=0.012)while there were no significant effects of HS on plasma glucose area under the curve in response to the *** plasma insulin response over the first 60 min after the IVGTT was decreased by HS(P=0.013)and dietary nCrPic(P=0.022)with the effects being *** response to the ITT plasma glucose reached a nadir sooner(P=0.005)in sheep exposed to HS,although there was no effect on the depth of the *** nCrPic decreased(P=0.007)the plasma glucose nadir after *** the duration of the ITT plasma insulin concentrations were lower in sheep exposed to HS(P=0.013)whereas there was no significant effect of supplemental *** was no effect of either HS or nCrPic on cortisol response to *** nCrPic supple-mentation decreased(P=0.013)mitogen-activated protein kinase-8(JNK)and increased(P=0.050)carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1B(CPT1B)mrNA expression in skeletal *** of this experiment demonstrated that animals under HS and supplemented with nCrPic had greater insulin sensitivity.

The stability of carbon from a maize-derived hydrochar as a function of fractionation and hydrothermal carbonization temperature in a Podzol

Hydrochar(HC)produced by the hydrothermal carbonization(HTC)of typically wet biomass is generally considered to be less effective for carbon(C)sequestration in soils compared to biochar(BC)by pyrolysis,due to a higher content of more easily decomposable *** the recalcitrance of HC is suggested to improve with increasing HTC production temperature,the way it interacts and becomes associated with soil organic matter(SOM)fractions of different stabilities against decomposition,may also influence its effectiveness for C sequestration in *** that respect,this study aimed to verify the potential of HCs from maize silage produced at different HTC temperatures(190,210 and 230℃)for C sequestration in a HC-amended sandy loam *** do this,we conducted a pot trial experiment and traced the fate of HC-derived C(HC-C)within different SOM fractions,namely the free-and occluded particulate organic matter(POMF and POMO,respectively)fractions and that comprising organic matter(OM)bound to clays(OMCl).Approx.1 year after applying 5%of the different HTC temperature HCs to the soil,the SOM fractions were isolated by density fractionation for each HC treatment(HC190,HC210 and HC230)and the control(absent of HC).All fractions and the HCs were analyzed for organic C(OC)content and isotopic signatures(δ^(13)C).From the δ^(13)C signatures,the amount of HC-C and native soil organic carbon(SOC)within each fraction was *** C contents and decreased H/C and O/C ratios were observed with increasing HTC production temperatures,which sug-gests a lower stability for the low temperature *** ca.1 year,a loss of~20-23%of the bulk soil TOC was found in the HC-amended *** POMF fraction of the HC-amended soils showed losses of 68-81%HC-C and 52-72%native SOC,which may be due to a positive priming effect caused by HC *** POM_(O) and OM_(Cl) fractions of the HC-amended soils contained more OC than the control,indicating the integration of HC-C together wi

Prevalence and Correlates of Elevated Blood Pressure in Chinese Children Aged 6-13 Years: a Nationwide School-Based Survey

Objective To estimate the prevalence of elevated blood pressure（EBP） in Chinese children and identify individual and family factors associated with EBP. Methods A nationwide cross-sectional study was conducted in 2010 using stratified cluster sampling. Participants＇ blood pressure was measured, and their parents completed a questionnaire on personal and family characteristics. Prevalence and correlates of EBP were assessed. results Among a total of 24,333 participants, 20.2% of boys and 16.3% of girls had EBP. The prevalence of EBP increased with the ascending trend of waist circumference, Waist-to-height ratio, and body mass index. The adjusted prevalence ratios（aP rs） for obese boys and girls were 2.50 and 2.97, respectively. Fewer urban boys（16.2%） had EBP than rural boys（21.7%）. Boys with a family history of hypertension were 12% more likely to have EBP. Children whose mothers received a college education tended to have lower likelihood of EBP; with an aP r was 0.85 among boys and 0.78 among girls. Conclusion EBP is common among obese students and those who have a family history of hypertension. A negative association between mothers＇ education levels and EBP risk in children was found.

Evaluation of percutaneous permeation of repellent DEET and sunscreen oxybenzone from emulsion-based formulations in artificial membrane and human skin

Insect repellent DEET and sunscreen ingredient oxybenzone play an essential role in minimizing vector-borne diseases and skin *** purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of emulsion type,addition of thickening agent and droplet size in three emulsion-based lotions on percutaneous permeation of DEET and oxybenzone using in vitro diffusion experiments,in order to minimize overall systemic permeation of the *** C(water-in-oil emulsion)significantly increased overall permeation of DEET through human skin(56%)compared to Formulation A(oil-in-water emulsion).Formulation B(oil-in-water emulsion with thickening agent xanthan gum)significantly decreased the size of oil droplet containing DEET(16%),but no effect on oil droplets containing *** xanthan gum also increased overall permeation of DEET and oxybenzone(21%and 150%)when compared to Formulation A;presence of both ingredients in Formulation B further increased their permeation(36%and 23%)in comparison to its single *** permeation of oxybenzone through LDPE was significantly higher by 26%-628%than that through human skin;overall permeation of DEET through human skin was significantly higher by 64%-338%than that through LDPE.

Influence of growing location and cultivar on rhyzopertha dominica （Coleoptera： Bostrichidae） and Sitophilus oryzae （Coleoptera： Curculionidae） infestation of rough rice

Long-grain rice cultivars Cocodrie, Wells, and XP 723 grown in three locations （Hazen, MO; Essex and Newport, Ar, USA）, and medium-grain rice cultivars Bengal and XP 713 grown in two locations （Jonesboro and Lodge Corner, Ar, USA）, were harvested and assayed for susceptibility to rhyzopertha dominica （F.）（Coleoptera： Bostrichidae）, the lesser grain borer, and Sitophilus oryzae （L.）（Coleoptera： Curculionidae）, the rice weevil, on rice held at 27℃, 57% and 75% relative humidity （rH）. Separate samples from the same harvest lots were also analyzed for the physical characteristics of brown rice yield, percentage whole kernels and kernel thickness. Progeny production and feeding damage of r. dominica were significantly different among long-grain cultivars within two of the three locations （P 〈 0.05）, but not for location or rH （P ≥ 0.05）, while progeny production of S. oryzae was different among cultivars, location, and rH （P 〈 0.05）. On medium-grain rice, both cultivar and location were significant for progeny production of r. dominica, but not rH, while cultivar and rH were significant for progeny production of S. oryzae, but not location. On both rice types, feeding damage of r. dominica followed the same trends and was always strongly positively correlated with progeny production （P 〈 0.05）, but for S. oryzae there were several instances in which progeny production was not correlated with feeding damage （P ≥ 0.05）. Physical characteristics of both rice types were statistically significant （P 〈 0.01） but actual numerical differences were extremely small, and were generally not correlated with progeny production of either species. results indicate that the location in which a particular rice cultivar is grown, along with its characteristics, could affect susceptibility of the rice to r. dominica and S. oryzae.
