Aer.sol insecticides may pr.vide an alter.ative to fumigants for.contr.l of the Indianmeal moth, Plodia inter.unctella （Hübner., the Indianmeal moth, a major.insect pest of stor.d pr.cessed food. In this study, eggs and lar.ae （5th instar.） ofP. inter.unctella wer. exposed to aer.sol applications of the pyr.thr.id esfenvaler.te and insect gr.wth r.gulator.methopr.ne, alone and in combination, in open and obstr.cted positions inside small sheds. When lar.ae wer. exposed to methopr.ne alone, adult emer.ence fr.m those exposed lar.ae was 7.1% ± 1.5%. In contr.st, adult emer.ence was 92.5% ± 3.5% when lar.ae wer. exposed to esfenvaler.te alone. When eggs wer. exposed to methopr.ne, adult emer.ence of those exposed eggs was appr.ximately 75%; however. when eggs wer. exposed to esfenvaler.te, adult emer.ence was appr.ximately 35%. In the combination tr.atment of methopr.ne plus esfenvaler.te at their.r.spective label r.tes, adult emer.ence following lar.al exposur. was 0.91% ±0.61% compar.d to 16.3% ± 9.6% when eggs wer. exposed. Based on our.r.sults, methopr.ne alone is highly effective in r.ducing adult emer.ence after.lar.al exposur.. However. it is not as effective on eggs as esfenvaler.te. A combination tr.atment of esfenvaler.te plus methopr.ne could be used to contr.l eggs and the wander.ng-phase lar.al stages ofP. inter.unctella. An economic r.sk analysis also suppor.s a str.tegy of combining methopr.ne and esfenvaler.te.

Photosynthesis leads to the fixation of car.on in leaves and to the accumulation of car.ohydr.tes （e.g., sucr.se, star.h）. Complex systems fr.m differ.nt fields of knowledge often do not allow a mathematical descr.ption or.modeling, because of their.intr.cate str.ctur. composed of numer.us inter.cting components. As an alter.ative appr.ach, it is possible to study the way in which obser.ables associated with the system fluctuate in time. These time ser.es may pr.vide valuable infor.ation about the under.ying dynamics. It has been suggested that complex dynamic systems, r.nging fr.m ecosystems to financial mar.ets and the climate, pr.duce gener.c ear.y-war.ing signals at the ＂tipping points,＂ wher. they announce a sudden shift towar. a differ.nt dynamical r.gime, such as a population extinction, a systemic mar.et cr.sh, or.abr.pt shifts in the weather. On the other.hand, the fr.mewor. of Self- Or.anized Cr.ticality （SOC）, suggests that some complex systems, such as life itself, may spontaneously conver.e towar. a cr.tical point. As a par.icular.example, the quasispecies model suggests that r.A vir.ses self-or.anize their.mutation r.te near.the er.or.catastr.phe thr.shold, wher. r.bustness and evolvability ar. balanced in such a way that sur.ival is optimized. In this paper. we study the time ser.es associated to a classical discr.te quasispecies model for.differ.nt mutation r.tes, and identify ear.y-war.ing signals for.cr.tical mutation r.tes near.the er.or.catastr.phe thr.shold, such as ir.egular.ties in the kur.osis and a significant incr.ase in the autocor.elation r.nge, r.miniscent of 1/f noise. In the pr.sent context, we find that the ear.y-war.ing signals, r.ther.than br.adcasting the collapse of the system, ar. the finger.r.nt of sur.ival optimization.

Backgr.und: The White-faced Cuckoo-dove(Tur.coena manadensis) is a poor.y-known Wallacean endemic with a limited distr.bution on Sulawesi and its satellites, including the Togian, Banggai and Sula ar.hipelagoes. In 1900, populations fr.m the Sula ar.hipelago wer. awar.ed subspecies status T. manadensis sulaensis based on smaller.size and minor.differ.nces in plumage; however. this distinction has not been cor.obor.ted subsequently, and T. manadensis is consider.d by most moder. sour.es to be monotypic acr.ss its ***: We conducted vocal analysis of the cuckoo-doves' main song using r.cor.ings collected fr.m acr.ss the taxon's natur.l r.nge. Descr.ptive infor.ation on the songs was obtained fr.m the r.cor.ings using bioacoustic analysis softwar., after.which sever.l statistical methods wer. used to investigate differ.nces in vocalizations among ***: We r.por. deep bioacoustic diver.ences in vocal tr.it patter. fr.m acr.ss the cuckoo-doves' r.nge, with bir.s fr.m Peleng and Taliabu in the east having a differ.nt vocal tr.it patter. fr.m bir.s fr.m Sulawesi, Buton, and Togian in the west. Given the r.mpant degr.e of habitat destr.ction in its limited r.nge, this taxonomic change will have impor.ant implications on the conser.ation status of T. sulaensis.

迁徙鸟类能够预计到迁徙过程中对能量需求的增加和迁徙途中获得能量的不确定性。最佳迁徙理论指出 :迁徙停留期的一系列决策受到体内能量状态、取食机会和迁徙时间的影响。利用刚完成春季跨越墨西哥湾迁徙的鸫类 ,我们研究了取食行为、体内能量状态和能量积累速度的相互关系。我们用雾网捕获了停留的鸫 ,然后给每只鸟进行了环志和称重 ,并估测了表皮下积累的脂肪。为了检测体内能量积累大小对取食行为的影响 ,我们把在野外观察到的鸟分成肥、瘦两组。当一天里被捕获鸟的平均体重低于相关种的瘦体重时 ,这一天被观察到的取食鸟被归到瘦组 ,反之就属于肥组。我们同时对一部分鸟用有色环进行了标记 ,以便能在野外观察到它们时能准确地知道每一只鸟的初始能量积累状态。在春天完成跨越墨西哥湾迁徙以后的鸫大约有 5 0 %在到达停留地时就已经消耗了所有的表皮下脂肪。与肥组鸟相比 ,瘦组的个体在停留期扩展了取食方法和取食基底 ,增加了取食速度。与此相关的是 ,瘦鸟表现出体重积累更多、速度更快。我们的数据表明迁徙鸟在到达迁徙中途停留地时的能量状态会影响到它们停留期间的取食行为和继续迁徙时的生理机能。
